State of the Program for June 4th, 2021

In the News

Modern Horizons 2:  The new to Modern set hit MTGO on Wednesday with limited play starting on Thursday.  If you are looking for the card image gallery, you can check it out here

Treasure Chest Updates: No full article about Treasure Chest changes the short holiday week and addition of Modern Horizons 2 has tied up the MTGO team, but we're getting new avatars, cards are in chests, booster bundles and sets have been added as well.  You can check out the avatars here

Legacy Showcase Update:  Magic Online had a whoopsie doodle over the weekend which involved not only the Legacy Showcase Challenge being resheduled but also cancelled the Pioneer Challenge and ended the Vintage Challenge early.  The Legacy Showcase Challenge has been rescheduled for June 6th.

Over the Horizon Series:  A series of six limited events were players with six wins in a qualifier move on to another limited event. Top finishers will get sets of Modern Horizons and Modern Horizons 2.  More info here.

Strixhaven Championship:  250 players are playing in the Strixhaven Championship this weekend.  It is Standard and Historic, and coverage of the event will be starting on the Magic Twitch channel as this article goes live.  You can check out the Standard metagame breakdown here.  You wanna see what they are playing in Historic?  Cool beans that list is here

The List:  If you're getting set boosters of Modern Horizons 2, The List has been updated.  I am getting four set boxes in, and have opened a Crown of Empires in every set since this started.  They didn't take it out, so I'm hoping I can keep the streak alive!  You can check out The List here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: It has been a while since I last showed off Mono Red in Standard. While it has not great matchups with the Prismari Dragon deck and with Adventures, the deck can still go against most of the format. Look for it to punish the Sultai decks in the event.

Historic: One of the biggest winners from the Mystic Archive, Izzet Phoenix is the most played Historic deck in the Strixhaven championship.

Legacy: Commander players looking to play in Legacy should find a couple of familiar faces here in this Dimir Flash deck.

Modern: A sweet day zero deck from The SnapCast for Modern Horizons 2!

Pauper: Here is a glimpse of Pauper before the format was taken over by squirrels.

Pioneer: I am not sure if this is better or worse than the two color aura decks, but adding a Hexproof creature to the deck might very well be nice.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,718.  Last week, before the addition of Modern Horizons 2, it was $27,630.  Up almost a thousand, but will come crashing down as prices start to settle down.

In Closing

I played in 2 MH2 drafts so far, the first one I went 2-1 with a sweet Green White deck.  The second deck was a Red White artifact deck that I had to file comp over, because the program stopped responding as we went from pack 2 to pack three and I ended up missing the whole.  I then finished up some new EDH decks with cards from the set, played a game a watched MTGO crash. I got to play some more games later on and they were just fine though.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
