State of the Program for June 7th, 2023
MTGO Socials: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here. In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here. MTGO has a Twitter account, and can now add an account for Facebook and Instagram.
Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone. Currently being redeemed is The Brothers' War (About Half-Gone) Phyrexia: All Will Be One, and March of the Machine. As of May 23, 2023, Redemption Tokens are non-refundable!
Challenge Schedule Changing: Two Prelims on Friday nights are now becoming small Challenge events. This helps players in the Asia-Pacific region. Saturday is also getting another Modern Challenge. Both of these are 32 player events. The Saturday 6 a.m. Standard Event is going back to a small event prize structure.
Two-Factor Authentication: *From last week* This is in Account Settings. To turn it on you will be asked for your account password and a 6-digit code sent to the email associated with your account. You can use either an email or authenticator based system. This will help keep your accounts secure, you can read about the system here.
Lord of the Rings: *From last week* The previews for the next set, Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth have started after the weekly Twitch show did a deep dive on the mechanics and previews of the cards. This set will be Modern legal, and on June 13th Daybreak will have an article telling us what will be on MTGO. You can check out the mechanics article here, and the galleries for regular, variant and commander cards as well! The price of a Lord of the Rings booster on MTGO will be 4.99.
All-Access: *From last week* Starts on the 31 and lasts until June 14th. There will be two super qualifiers and four showcase challenges during the token's life! In addition, top 16 players and players that complete the swiss portion of the event with an x-2 record will get a set of Aftermath, and those in the top 4 will get a premium set!
Patch Notes: You can check out the notes for this update here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

I
wrote a little bit about the Dimir Tempo decks in Pioneer that are splashing
Arclight Phoenix
to go along with all the cantrips.
I think the first thing to learn about this deck is that it’s not a traditional Phoenix deck. This is a Dimir deck based around Ledger Shredder first and recurring Arclight Phoenix second. You get a lot of Convoke triggers with the Shredder, and Tainted Indulgence and Consider help to fill the yard with Phoenix. You have a lot of cheap cantrips to make recurring it easy and eventually overwhelm the opponent with card advantage.
Or they go off with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx on turn 4 and you’re so far behind that you question even playing Pioneer at all. That’s what happened in the second round of the Pioneer league that I played in. I get it, Nykthos is a really cool card, but my opponent put three copies of Cavalier of Thorns into play on the fourth turn, despite me having removal for two elves and it’s like, come on WotC do something. Aside from getting crushed in the second round, the deck played really well, but we had more instances of pilot failure with it. I got very impatient against Azorius Control and tried to force an Ashiok, Nightmare Muse. I ran it directly into a Make Disappear with one mana up, passing, with that one mana up, I was unable to counter their Teferi, Hero of Dominaria next turn.
I drew two Thoughtseizes off the top.
Yup.
Would more open mana and patient play in that crucial turn mattered?
Maybe!
After the bans, it is of course, time to look at the new state of the Standard format. All the decks this week are from weekend events, ladder play and leagues!

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

I was going to take the week off from the article and site, but in the end decided not to. I do plan on taking off sometime soon. I do need a real vacation.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
