State of the Program for March 20th, 2020

In the News

Vintage Cube is back:  With so many people staying home due to Covid-19 the team at Magic the Gathering Online brought back Vintage Cube to help us pass the time.  It's the same cube as it was last time, and will be running until April 1st.

StarCity cancels more events:  Looks like the Starcity Open circuit won't be back until May at the earliest, with the cancellation of Cincinnati on May 2nd.  Previous events are also canceled.  Read more here.

WotC suspends qualifying for Player's Tour 2:  With the pandemic, events are being canceled and with that came uncertainty for the next Player's Tour.  That was quelled recently with the suspension of the season.  You can see the article here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech
Standard: Just when you thought it was safe to play Standard, Oko is back to ruin everything!  Okay, maybe not, but still Oko is still in Standard, it's just jumbo sized.

Legacy:  I do not know why Cunning Wish is so high right now, but if it allows decks like this to thrive in Legacy, I am here for it!

Modern: With paper events being a rare thing, I wanted to highlight a deck that did well in an 18 player event in Japan.  Not a huge tournament, but it did finish 4-1, and I can't imagine anything more fun than what we have here.

PauperKiln Fiend decks have been removed from the metagame, and it feels like it's been a long time since that happened.  The Tireless Tribe combo deck took its spot and players had almost quit casting Temur Battle Rage.  This list shows that Nivix Cyclops can still be a part of the Pauper field.

Pioneer:  I have an affinity for Wheel decks, and this Narset deck recently went 5-0 in a league.  I played it, and the mana felt rough.  Sometimes (Engulf the Shore) was not doing enough because of all the non Island lands in the deck.  Still, even though I didn't play it well, the deck was a lot of fun to play, and could do well in the format!

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: War of the Spark cards seemed to have jumped hard this week.  Is this because of the lack of product?  Is it because of players coming back to MTGO?  Most of the cards that jumped see play in other formats than Standard to be sure.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $22,580.  Last week the number was $21,490.  We've got ourselves an increase!  A huge increase even as the bump was $1,090!  This surely has something to do with the amount of people staying home.

In Closing

This is the second week in a row that I have written State of the Program while under a tornado watch.  Gotta say, this is not a lot of fun for me, the noted dude that is scared of nearly everything.  I miss writing fun news too, all the cancellations and such are not a lot of to recap. We're gonna get through this, but gosh everything feels so meh right now.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
