State of the Program for March 27th, 2020

In the News

Super Qualifiers:  These events have enhanced prizes, first and second place both pick up invites, and are open to all players.  The schedule will change weekly, so you can see that here.  They have been scheduled through April 2nd already.  These cost 40 tickets, 400 play points or 40 QPs to enter.  You can get all the info here.

Vintage Cube:  This is still running until April 1st.

Modern Horizons Draft:  This will start running on April 1st.  You can see on the price charts that most listed cards went down, but this is needed for MTGO.

FNM at home:  First one starts today!  Check with your LGS to see if they are participating.  Today's FNM at home is Challenger decks.  You can read about it here.

MagicFest Online:  ChannelFireball has started a weekly tournament series to take the place of paper MagicFests.  They are also selling MagicFests in a Box.  With these local game stores can also benefit whenever you play in one of these or buy a box set.  Entry a code provided to you from your local store and they will get a percentage of the fees collected.  You can read about MagicFest Online here

Suspension of in store play:  In-store play has been suspended by WotC until at least May 10th.  This covers the North American, Latin American and European regions.  Promo packs can be used as sales incentives and Buy a box promos may also be mailed out with box orders.  Read about it here.

Ikoria Changes:  April 2nd sees previews starting for the set.  April 16th is when the set releases on Arena and MTGO.  April 17th the set will release in  Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. May 15th it will release in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Australia/New Zealand. The set will feature a combined prerelease and release.

LGS can run and charge for digital events:  Until at least June 1st, WotC has given local game stores permission to charge up to ten dollars for entry fees to store ran Arena events.

Mystery Booster Reprint:  On top of the Ikoria changes, WotC is reprinting Mystery Boosters and sending them to WPN stores at no charge.  You can read about this, the Ikoria changes, and entry fee news bits here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech
Standard: I can't wait for Standard to add a new set.

LegacyPrimeval Titan is seeing play in Legacy and that is just wild to me.  It's a shame that it seems like the format is not getting as much support anymore.

Modern: I am sure I have written about this deck before, but now it has Greater Gargadon in it, and that, to me, is beautiful.

Pauper:  I forgot to add the title to this deck, but it's just mono black control.  Why doesn't this deck play Oubliette anymore?  Are the extra mana symbols not worth it anymore with all the other removal in it?

Pioneer:  I want to call this deck Affinity, because it's just artifact creatures.  At least I'm not calling it Robots though, am I right?

Vintage: I will always feature Dragon Combo whenever I get a chance to do so.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

This list seems a lot bigger than it recently has been.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

No big number this week.  Pete is adjusting to work from home with his job, and I am still unable to actually do the stuff myself.

In Closing

Next week, State of the Program is going on break!  While the world may be shutting down with school closures and sports cancellations, one bit of normalcy that I will have is having my son during spring break.  He gets dropped off tonight for a week full of awesome stuff, and I of course, want to spend as much time as I can with him.

There wasn't a tornado watch in Kentucky while I wrote this, so that was a super fun streak to end!

Prices were done on Thursday. The bulk of the article was written Friday morning after I woke up at 230, and then rewritten after the fan in my pc stopped working, causing my computer to overheat and shut down.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
