State of the Program for March 5th, 2021

In the News

Kaldheim Redemption:  It has started for real this time!  Sets should have been pulled off of accounts on Wednesday.  The availability guarantee will end on May 19, 2021, and the redemption period will end on June 23rd.

Magic Online Champions Showcase:  Next weekend on the 13th and 14th will see the remaining 2020 showcase events.  Both days are Vintage Cube and Modern.  You can watch them on Twitch

Time Spiral Remastered:  Previews of the reprint set are wrapping up now, you can see the actual set here and the bonus sheet of cards here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

I didn't mean for it to be an Izzet week for the decks, but after picking three Izzet decks, I decided to try to tie the rest of the decks to Izzet as well.

Standard
: This 6-0 deck from Arena was something that caught my eye because Wednesday night, while hanging out with friends on Discord, one of them asked about a Giant deck being hard to bui;d because everything was so expensive.  I countered with changelings helping out with that.  This deck shows that a Giant deck can exist.

Historic:  An old favorite in Historic has gotten better thanks to the ban to Teferi, Time RavelerFinale of Promise is able to reach it's full value now that the walker is out of the format.

LegacyNarset, Parter of Veils and Day's Undoing is a heck of a combo in a format where cards are so important.  We have the Splinter Twin combo. Hullbreacher shows up to ruin the day too.  This deck is three drop heavy, and what I think the Blue and Red Stompy (Dragon Stompy and Sea Stompy) hanging out and making really good friends.

Modern: Izzet Blitz is Mono Red Prowess, but with creatures that can go up high to deal damage.

Pauper:  Izzet Delver is one of the iconic decks of the format, the different decision between this and running snow-covered lands and Skred I think is closer to a personal feel of the format more than anything else.

Pioneer:  There used to be an Izzet Dragons deck a few years ago in Standard.  Goldspan Dragon is an upgrade from whichever Tarkir dragon it ended up replacing.

Vintage:

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,120. Last week it was $26,950.  We've gained $1,170 in a week.

In Closing

Price lists were completed on Wednesday.  I drafted more than once this week.  Super weird!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
