State of the Program for May 1st, 2020

In the News

Super Qualifiers:  These are now scheduled through May 7th, with a variety of formats for your playing pleasure!

Planeswalker Points and DCI Numbers Ending:  Wizards Accounts are taking over the role of the DCI number. The Wizards account works with the Companion Ap and will also work with the yet to be released newest event reporter.  Read about it here.

Secret Lair Godzilla Lands:  For 29.99 you're getting five foil basic lands featuring Godzilla!  There is a limit of 15 per customer. You can pick these up on May 7th. You can read about it here.

Events Canceled:  SCG Louisville, SCG Philadelphia and SCG CON Summer have been canceled. WotC has suspended all in store play until July 1st.  If you're wanting to support a sweet store, check out mtgmelee.com, as CapeFearGames is running digital Friday Night Magic tournaments there.

FNM at Home:  This week the event is Artisan, which I think is just Pauper and Uncommons.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I know I said last week would be Gyruda, Doom of Depths week, but I started to regret that pretty early in to this.  It's already been pushed back a few tiers in Standard, and hasn't been as impressive in other formats.  In fact, the Legacy, Modern and Pioneer versions are all really close to each other.  You'll see the lists, but I really wish I went with a different companion this week!

Legacy:  Turbo Gyruda can win on turn one with a good draw and better luck.  It takes two copies of Lion's Eye Diamond to cast Gyruda, and with 25 copy effects, the math seems favorable to go through your entire deck to get a critical mass of dorks and then Dragonlord Kolaghan to give all the copies that are still in play haste.  Is it likely to win on turn one?   No probably not, but the possibility exists, and it is really good against traditional hate like Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace.  It's less good against Tormod's Crypt and Ravenous Trap, I would imagine.

Modern: Okay, so I wasn't going to do another Gyruda deck here, especially when they are all so close in terms of cards across the three older formats, so I deciced that another Lurrus deck would fill the Modern hole this week.

Pauper:  So Affinity has 8 copies of Thoughtcast now, (well four copies of it, and four copies of Of One Mind) and that seems really unfair for this deck.  Cheap card draw and cheap threats could lead to snowballing board states for the Affinity player.

Pioneer:  This is basically the Legacy version with Paradise Druid and Wolfwillow Haven replacing the broken mana acceleration.  This version only runs 22 clone effects though, but as you're deeper in your library when you start to go off, it should still be effective.

Vintage: I couldn't find a Gyruda deck for Vintage, but I imagine one could exist.  What are they gonna restrict in this deck if Lutri turns out to be to much for the format?

The joke is this deck is already restricted list.dec.  Please laugh.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

UltraPro has a new deckbox:  It features a Bluetooth speaker and microUSB port.  Not sure why, but okay.

When keeping PR real goes wrong:  Jim Sterling dunks on the PR company WotC uses for spam practices.  It's not family friendly so listen at your own risk.

Download your play history:  mtgmeta.io has developed a tool to download your play history before it is gone on the 27th.  Check it out here.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. Of course, Pete has been super busy working from home, so the number has been missing.  Thankfully, Pete got some free time and hooked me up with it this week!  The big number this week is $24,937.  The last time this was reported was on April 10th, and it was $24,469.  We've had a small increase since then of 468 dollars!  Thanks for all your help Pete, it is much appreciated!

In Closing

Prices were done early Thursday morning, like 1AM. Sleep has been hard to come by.  I haven't slept through the night in what feels like weeks.  Animal Crossing is still heavy in the rotation, but so is Persona 5 Royal, as that was a birthday present for me.  My son turns 13 on Friday, which is just incredible to me, because it feels like it wasn't to long ago that I took this job and then he came along.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
