State of the Program for May 20th, 2022

In the News

Baldur's Gate Previews:  Previews for the next Commander Legends set started on Tuesday.  Wizards of the Coast is hosting special Discord sessions for learning things and you can find the schedule here.  If you're looking for the preview schedule, that is here.  Here is the mechanics article, and the card image galleries are here and here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard:  This came across my Twitter feed over the weekend after challenges wrapped up and this build finished high.  It's so much fun. The mana is fantastic, the sagas offer some real compelling gameplay, and there is tension that you can feel in the games.  I know it is not needed but I would have loved some copies of Satsuki, Living Lore in the deck.  It's on theme, but it also makes the deck worse!

Legacy:  Legacy results right now feel like you look at 4 Izzet decks in the top 4 and then the bottom half of the cut if just a magical land of what could be, if WotC paid attention and cultivated the format any at all.

Modern: The card that everyone thought was going to fit right in to the Calibrated Blast deck has done that with Shadow of Mortality coming in and not just being a giant mana cost of a card but also be cast if the need arises.  This deck is chaotic good.

Pauper: Here is a new take on the Inside Out combo in Pauper, this time melding the combo deck with Boros Metalcraft.  Super unique!

Pioneer:  I saw this on my Twitter feed Thursday and sold my copies of Ledger Shredder for the three copies of Karn, the Great Creator that I needed to build this with and have felt no regrets.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $28,920.  Last week despite me taking the week off, Pete was great and did the number for me, it was $29,305. That is a small $385 loss.

In Closing

I didn't mean to take last week off. I have every intention of sitting down and writing the article until Tuesday.  My ADHD brain told me that I wanted to build Commander decks, and instead of making them just fancier versions of the precons that my builds basically were, I wanted to up the power level a little bit and instead build decks based around the Universes Beyond stuff that Wizards of the Coast is doing.

That decision meant I had to research which characters I wanted to build for, and left me with Gyruda, Doom of Depths and Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt using their Godzilla Series versions.  I went with Edgar, Charmed Groom, Olivia, Crimson Bride and Torens, Fist of Angels for the Dracula Series.  I built a deck for each character from The Walking Dead, and went super hard on the Stranger Things characters, ending up with a 5 color deck and ones for Esper, Temur, and Naya as well.  On top of that I also decided to get a head start on the Street Fighter Secret Lair, because even if they haven't been released, I do own a printer and can make a copy while waiting on them.  I went with my favorite characters from my childhood, Blanka, Chun-Li, Guile and Zangief.

I had to take apart the 20 plus Commander decks I already had to make room and decided to go ahead and take apart my Pioneer (gotta wait till after the bans from the next big event now I guess) and Modern decks.

I am actually still not done with this, but all the cards are put away and I am pulling things now.  It might have been a small mistake to go so hard, but I blame my brain!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
