State of the Program for May 6th, 2022
Powered Cube: This cube, from Caleb Gannon, looks to take a creative look at old archeypes. You can check it out and the card list here.
Pride Across the Multiverse: A new Secret Lair, this one for Pride Month and fifty percent of each one sold is being donated to The Trevor Project. there are eight cards in this drop, each one "celebrating the relentless creativity of the LGTTQIA2S+ community. The artists on the cards were across the spectrum of the LGTTQIA2S+and BIPOC communities. In the drop you get a copy of Sol Ring
, Triumphant Reckoning
, Bearscape
, Alesha, Who Smiles At Death
, Collective Voyage
, Heartbeat of Spring
, Mana Confluence
and Savor the Moment
. The drop also includes a digitial zine with stories and interviews from the artists and MTG Arena codes. You can check it out here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: This Modified Gruul deck looks to take advantage of
Invigorating Hot Spring
to give your modified creatures haste and nearly every creature in the deck has it's own modification. This list, from a small Japanese event looks like an absolute blast!
More Standard: This list, also from a small Japanese event is one that I have had some experience with this week, playing it in a couple of leagues. It plays very much like a Boros Feather list, but of course has to use
Mavinda, Students' Advocate
in it's place. The creatures that you cast spells on either get bigger or draw you more cards and it's a really robust strategy.
March of Swirling Mist
is incredible here, as it clears the way for lethal attacks, or saves or from them!
Oh my gosh, even more Standard: Okay, it's a ninja deck but with the best thing you can cheat out for cheap in Standard right now,
Lord Xander, the Collector
.
Joshua this is to much go over other formats:
Vivien on the Hunt
is seeing more play as a
Birthing Pod
like card and I just thought that this list, like the rest of the Standard ones I went over this week, was interesting.
Modern: I saw this one on Twitter over the week, and it seems like
Scotty Fisher has found a really neat way to play Modern. In the thread that I linked you can see an example of a turn three kill!
Pauper: I've wanted to make UG Madness or even Gruul Madness work in Pauper and have never been able to, Madness is a fun mechanic, so it's to see it pop up in the Pauper format. Though, attacking with giant dogs and snobby wurms is a lot of fun too, I just want things to be like when I was young again! *
*Not really.
Pioneer:
Boon of Safety
is a great new addition to this deck!
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Streets of New Capenna made it to the table this week, with five cards jumping on to the list. While
Ob Nixilis, the Adversary
might be the highest priced one,
Ledger Shredder
might be the card that is more impactful across multiple formats.

Pauper Staples: It's the time of the month where we look at Pauper staples!
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Prices were done yesterday, but before Ledger Shredder
spiked harder. I played a lot of Standard and Commander this week, with the normal amount of Battlegrounds and Hearthstone.
I can't be normal and swallow pills, and my new script is about half the size of a Necco Wafer, and I have to crush it in order to take it. It is the most bitter pill to swallow.
It tastes nasty is what I was trying to get at.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
