State of the Program for May 8th, 2020

In the News

Historic Anthology III:  Previews for this start and stop today, as of writing we know that Phyrexian Obliterator and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger are a part of the set.  This, along with Ranked Historic comes to Arena on May 21st. You can find the previews here.

Online Play Schedule:  Wizards of the Coast is now showing off the weekly play schedule for MTGO and MTGA on twitter. It's a nice daily view of the important events that are going on during the pandemic. You can view the rest of this week, and they plan on making this a weekly thing.

DreamHack Arena events cancelled
:  One day this will be over, and we'll come out of this to a new normal, but it doesn't feel like it will be any time soon

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

This week we're still looking at Companion decks, after featuring Lurrus of the Dream-Den and Gyruda, Doom of Depths this week I am going to try to show off Yorion, Sky Nomad, a card that makes sure you play with at least eighty cards instead of sixty.  What was one mocked as bad deckbuilding is now being heavily embraced because of a flyer that gets incredible value when it comes in to play!  Next week will be Zirda, the Dawnwaker.

Standard
:   So much value in this deck, sure there is ramp, but getting to reuse Agent of Treachery and Elspeth Conquers Death makes it hard for some decks to come back from that.

Legacy:

Modern: I haven't paid attention to Modern for what feels like months now, and I think it's because I dislike what my favorite format has become.  It's Legacy Lite, and I think it is deserving of so much more than that.

Pauper:  It's a shame I couldn't find one of the giant sized Dimir control decks doing well this week, but this cycling deck, featuring some of Ikoria's favorite cyclers will have to do!

Pioneer:  This is my most favorite deck in Pioneer right now.  I love getting so much value from Demonic Pact as this version plays differently from others before it. What used to be a card you would try to give away, you just keep it this time, and gain absurd value thanks to the flicker effects.

Vintage: Yorion was not a companion I expected to see in Vintage, but here we are.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $25,095.  Last week that number was $24,937.  It's a small bump, but a bump upwards of $158.

In Closing

Mowing the grass is a multiple hour ordeal for me to go through now.  The panic symptoms are nearly gone while I am outside doing it, but those have been replaced by an unspeakable pain in my hips.  Lifestyle changes are in order, not just for the mental illness, but to make things just a bit easier on my body.  At least Cassius is hanging out this weekend, that will be a lot of fun!  Been working on Mardu Fires for the digital FNM this week.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
