State of the Program for November 13th, 2020

In the News

Magic Online Championship: The 2019 Magic Online Champion is going to be crowned this weekend, and unless you followed Magic on Twitter, or read this column, chances are this is the first time you have heard about this event happening this weekend.  The poorly advertises 24 player event has a $250,000 prize pool, and features some incredible players, among them Fabrizio Anteri, Logan Nettles and Oliver Tiu.  Three rounds of Vintage Cube will be followed by four rounds of Modern on Friday, and an additonal three rounds of Vintage Cube and four rounds of Pioneer on Saturday, before cutting to the top four for more Modern and Pioneer action on Sunday.  This event is being broadcast on the twitch channel.  You can see the casters and qualified players here.  You can find out information about the competitiors here, which for some reason is a Google doc.

Redemption news: Adjusted times for Zendikar Rising redemptions are out.  Release date was the 11th of November.  The new reprint guarantee is March 3rd, 2021, and the new cutoff is April 7th, 2021.

MTG Arena:  Newest State of the Game came out on Wednesday, with Kaladesh Remastered leading the way in regards to news.  Unlike Amonkhet Remastered they didn't load up a bunch of new surprises in this set, with the exception of Sculpting Steel acting as the sets Buy-a-Box Promo. They are adding best of three draft this time around as well.   You can check out the full article here.

MTG Arena Mobile:  Also in State of the Game they mentioned that mobile play options on Arena were being pushed back to 2021.

Commander Legends: You can see the new avatars for the set here.  With the release of the set, they have taken the time to redo in game settings for phases, if you're playing in these make sure to check out the article and explanation here.  They are also adding Commander Constructed leagues.  I personally may never play anything else on MTGO again.

Pioneer Super Qualifier:  Saturday, November 14th seens the next Pioneer Super Qualifier.  It is at 3 a.m. PST and takes 40 MOCS QP, 40 Event Tickets, or 400 Play Points to enter.  Top two get an invite to the Kaldheim Split Championship.

Modern Split Championship Qualifier:  Clear your schedule for Sunday, November 15th at 7 a.m. PST for a Modern Split Championship Qualifier.  Use your MOCS points here and qualify for the Kaldheim Split Champion when you win the event!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard:   Everything is bluring together, because I am not sure if I have covered something before or not.  Standard though, seems to be in a really great place right now.  Nothing seems to be to overwhelming in events and decks that have copies of Irencrag Feat are being playing.  The format is truly healing.

Historic:  With Kaladesh Remastered out I wanted to look at a few more Historic decks this week.  Temur Marvel with Aetherworks Marvel and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger seems like the natural first inclusion.

Historic 2:  There have to be better builds of this deck, as this is what I am starting off with, and didn't find room for stuff like Shatterskull Passing or Valakut Awakening.  The idea behind it is to cast Indomitable Creativity with a bunch of tokens out and put four copies of Terror of the Peaks in to play.

Modern:

Pauper:  I have no idea what is going on in Pauper, but I am hoping that some of the new cards and downshifts helps the format a bit with Commander Legends.

Pioneer:

Historic 3: This one was going around Twitter last night. I haven't played it yet, but it appears to be super powerful.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $25,005.  Last week it was $24,875.  That is another week of gains. $130 may not seem like a lot but leading in to Commander Legends next week, I think it's a good sign, as we typically see a dip in the weeks before a set release.

In Closing

I was going to take this week off, and decided not to because of the Magic Online Championship.  WotC made a video that pushed the broadcasters more than the players, so maybe taking the week off wouldn't have been wrong.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
