State of the Program for November 15, 2019
Pioneer Ban Update: This week, Veil of Summer was banned. I forgot about the ban even happening and when I logged on to play some Pioneer, I was in a state of shock over not having any legal decks anymore. No big deal, but the ban, for as good as I have seen people call it, to me at least, has been easy to forget. We have the Invitational and Pioneer week ahead of us, so I expect bannings to be very active soon. For information go here.
Pioneer Week Scheduled: On Monday, November 25, get ready to PTQ every day that week in the Pioneer format! That's pretty much the news on that. Go here for all the information.
Mythic Championship VI: In an event that will be more remembered for the comical dominance of Oko, Thief of Crowns and WotC throwing a fit about altered lands, Ondřej Stráský won the event with Simic Food, over Paulo Vitor Dama da Rosa, also on Simic Food. Stráský's win is further evidence that if you decide to retire from Magic, you go on an incredible heater and win the event. Congrats to Ondřej!
Mythic Championship VII: Another Mythic Championship is just around the corner, December 6-8th. Should be a gas!
State of Arena: Historic Cards are coming to the client, and so is a friends list! They also stated that Pioneer is a goal for them on the client. Check it out here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

I think that Wizards of the Coast wanted to ban more cards in Pioneer than they did this week. I also think that they didn't because they were taking the Star City Games Invitational into account, and didn't want to make the event anymore costly for the players that are playing in it. Is this for sure what happened? Probably not, I honestly didn't think any cards were going to get banned at all this week, but after having so many cards countered by it, this one mana green Cryptic Command (the modes are of course, counter target spell and draw a card), seems to have been a sticking point to allowing other reactive cards to see play. Does the ban harm Nexus of Fate strategies? Yeah probably, and those are a super good way to beat up on Green Devotion, but I am starting to think that Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx may be the actual problem, and am hoping that Wizards, if they have to ban it, ban it. There is no need for a format to be held hostage by a land, like Vintage is with Mishra's Workshop.
Getting what one might call Mythic Championship fatigue. I am sure it's just a by-product of the late months, but three of them in what feels like back to back to back weekends feels a bit like overkill. To be fair though, I haven't watched any Mythic Championship since they made the name switch. I'm not sure why that is, but I used to be a heavy user in regards to watching tournament coverage, and it's not that way anymore. Twitch chat is usually a cesspool, but it's easy to close to not watch, and the coverage team is incredibly talented. Maybe coverage just isn't for me anymore?
On top of coverage fatigue, I am also feeling a little bit of burnout and State of the Program will be taking a break on Black Friday. I may not have Cassius for that week, but I need some time off, I am actually finishing this up at 11am on Friday morning. I couldn't make myself motivated to actually write (which is weird, because I wanted to write, and actually did get an article done at Legitmtg.com) and found myself just dragging my feet in regards to the whole process. I usually enjoy writing State of the Program, I love doing the prices and checking out decklists, but this week was just weird.
Going to have a busy opening to the week too, as I was one of the lucky people to be up and aware of signing up for the Twitch Rivals post Standard ban list tournament. I figure I'll finish managing the sites, then work as long as I can on finding a post ban Standard deck for the event, and then get that submitted. Hoping to not make a fool of myself, which is a heartbreaking goal to me now, as it used to be the goal was to win. I think I can recognize that I am not that strong of a player anymore, and am fine with that, but I really miss wanting to crush everything I was in. That winner's instinct I guess.
Mystery boosters look like a neat thing. I am not a fan of chaos drafting, but the playtest cards looked hilarious and looked like a ton of fun! I wonder what the foils are going to be for the retail edition, but by the time that comes out next year, I am afraid I will have forgotten about the product.
Standard: It's like the Izzet Flash deck, but more sinister! To me, with the amount of
Teferi, Time Raveler in the format, it takes real courage to sign up for an event with so many instants and flash spells in a deck. However, I love the look of this, feels like I just stepped out of a Men's Warehouse.
Brawl: To me Alela plays like an Esper version of Bogles. You don't have Hexproof dorks, but you have a lot of cards that go well with
All that Glitters and I might be stretching to make this comparison, but I'm gonna try!
Legacy: I don't actually know what this is called, but I figured, just looking at the list, you generate a ton of mana with your 0 drop rocks, a ton of advantage with
Emry, Lurker of the Loch and
Echo of Eons, and play a weird bomberman kinda game. I assume that you win with
Urza, High Lord Artificer and
Karn, the Great Creator tokens after you
Narset, Parter of Veils lock your opponent out of the game.
Modern: Another blue deck, another lock deck, this time,
Blood Moon is putting on the clamps to greedy Modern manabases.
Pauper: Again with the locks? Gonna need a ton of keys to get out of this one! Combat is what is locked out this time, and eventually you get milled out.
Ghostly Flicker, a card I have long wanted banned, does a lot of work here.
Pioneer: Haven't seen this much Phoenix since the last time I was in Arizona.
Vintage: A lot of Walkers getting work done in Vintage.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
Sealed PTQ - _JankyMerc__ took down the PTQ.
Pioneer Challenge - adrianretamosa won with Mono Green Devotion.
Pauper Challenge - Modern Monkey made their way to the top with Tron.
Legacy Challenge - Basic_Swamp had zero copies of their screenname in their Death's Shadow list.
Vintage Challenge - IamActuallyLvL1 probably leveled up a lot after their win with their Sultai Control list.
Pioneer PTQ - blastoids won with mono black aggro.
Modern Challenge - Leyline_of_the_Boys won with Eldrazi Tron.
Legacy PTQ - Playing Izzet Arcanist Hemsley won the Legacy PTQ.
MTGOTraders YouTube: Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday? Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here!
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Knight of Autumn,
Veil of Summer,
Prime Speaker Vannifer and
Niv-Mizzet Reborn fell off,
Knight of the Ebon Legion and
Liliana, Dreadhorde General jumped on to the table.
Nissa, Who Shakes the Earth would have fallen off, but since she was on the list last week, and she got some really bad news from Chandra, I felt like it was okay to keep her on the list. Can't have to much bad news in the same week right?

Modern Staples:
Time Warp, and
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn came off the list. Nothing was added to the list this week. Fetchlands, the good ones at least showed a little bit of a rebound this week.
Eternal Staples: With Star City dropping Legacy, MTGO may be the best place for regular, high level play of the format. I haven't seen a lot of stuff move, but things might if the community embraces the client.
Pauper Staples: I moved
Lotus Petal over to the Eternal table. It's been a long time coming.
Pioneer Staples:
Mox Amber,
Pithing Needle, and
Thing in the Ice fell off,
Kozilek's Return, perhaps the best way for the Eldrazi Ramp decks to kill a lot of stuff, comes on to the table. It seems like Pioneer prices are starting to stabilize, but with more bannings in the future of the format, it's going to be rapidly moving until everything is finally set up.

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 19435. Last week, that number was 19005. That's an increase of 435. Pioneer seems to have been great for the client so far!
Lots of time spent waiting on a plumber, who actually just showed up right before deadline, I'm gonna have hot water in the house for the first time in years, and I am super excited about not having to boil water to do dishes or bathe. Played State of Decay 2 and a lot of Pioneer this week.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
