State of the Program for November 19th, 2021

In the News

Eternal Weekend:  Legacy events happen this weekend.  Wasteland if Friday, Bayou is Saturday, and Sylvan Library is Sunday.   All-Access passes are back for the Eternal Weekends and are on sale now in the MTGO store.  Check out the details over at Magic.gg

Heroes of the Realm Auction:  Former Wizards of the Coast employee Robert Schuster is auctioning off 5 Heroes of the Realm cards.  These cards are given as employee rewards for certain projects at the company.  Robert has since moved on from Wizards of the Coast and is in the process of moving to help give his daughter a more accessible home and school district.  The five CGC graded cards are believed to be the only graded set in existance and include the following.  Collectigull, Keeper of the Secret Lair, War of the SparkChampions of Archery, and Myntasha, Honored One.  Mike Linnemann will be handling the auction on the MTG Rarities: Major Misprints, Test Prints, Oddities Facebook page.

Secret Lair:  A new Secret Lair drop is going to be out soon.  We have one from MSCHF that is supposed to be available for purchase on the 20th, but isn't linked to the Secret Lair site.  It's got new art for Blood Moon, Plains (Which has a peel off sticker to make a Battlefield Forge, Teferi's Puzzle Box, Swords to Plowshares, Grim Tutor and Cut to Ribbons.

The actul drop starts in 9 days, and features a basic land collection for Riot Games new cartoon, Arcane.  It also features a drop that has new art for Rhystic Study.  We're getting a Castle Dracula drop with the highlight being Phyrexian Tower.  A second basic land drop features Dracula on the lands much like Godzilla was featured after Ikoria dropped.  Fblthp has a drop that combines sweet cards easter egg art and Where's Waldo.  It is the most cute drop ever.  Crocodile Jackson has a monster collection that looks amazing, a snow-covered land drop that features pixel art is the third basic land drop of the sale.  The final thing is a whole Commander deck featuring double sided art for 5 of the cards.  You can check out the sale here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: It feels like Delver of Secrets was a plant for the Pioneer and Historic formats, something fun for Izzet to do that wasn't Arclight Phoenix or Crackling Drake. Turns out those two formats are just fine with those cards, so Standard gets to see some fun Delver stuff from time to time.

Historic:  Between this and a Mono Red Storm list from the last Historic dump on Magic.gg, I have had a lot really fun matches on Arena this week. Willow Geist gets out of hand quickly and with favorites like Narcomoeba and Creeping Chill.

Legacy:  Does anyone miss Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath? Legacy seems like a good place for it.

Modern: Charbelcher seemed to be all over the place this weekend. It's a cool and fun deck, so I hope that stays true for a while!

Pauper:  It appears that Affinity got some new toys from Crimson Vow. Blood Fountain adds two artifacts to the field for one black mana, and has late game power returning two creature cards from the graveyard to your hand. Wedding Invitation draws you a card, and makes it to where that Atog that is large can't be blocked.

Pioneer: Does Thalia, Guardian of Thraben finally give Humans in Pioneer a leg to stand on? Will Spirits, Vampires and Zombies welcome another tribe to the format? Will they all eventually play Collected Company? Probably not!

Vintage:  *Put the picture of Marge holding a potato saying I just they're neat here*

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Other Charts:  I was pressed for time this week, with all the new releases and couldn't get these done in time.  They will be back next time.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $26,756.  Last week it was $27,054.  Took a small loss of $748 this week.

In Closing

I do not know why the gaming world looks at the calendar and decides to ship everything at the same time.  I've been so busy getting stuff ready for Crimson Vow and a Yugi release this week.  Worked close to thirty five hours so far and still have two days of work this week.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
