State of the Program for November 1st, 2019

In the News

Commander Product Line:  Wizards of the Coast has fully embraced that Commander can make them millions of dollars, millions of dollars, millions of dollars and have a product line for 2020 that reflects that. Ikoria will bring 5 new decks with 71 new cards, Zendikar Rising will have 2 new decks each with three new cards per deck.  Commander Collection Green will offer 8 reprints, themed to the color. Commander Legends is a draft product, featuring 70 new legends.  Commander Legends will also come with 2 new decks as well. For full information on the offerings, check out Gavin's article.

Theros:  Beyond Death Leaks:
We are not gonna share them, but some cards from Theros:  Beyond Death were "apparently" "found in a Walgreens for sale" early this week. Any interested party can easily find them, but again, we're not sharing them, just wanted to let others know that it was a thing.

Pioneer Banned List:
The first Pioneer PTQ is today, like as soon as the article goes live on the East Coast.  On Thursday, during a slow time on Twitter, the Magic: The Gathering account tweeted out that off cycle bans for the format was still in the plans, and that the first one to happen would be Monday, November 4th.  Their plan is every Monday, even if nothing is changing, to update the list.  You can check out the tweet here, and otherwise, cross fingers that stuff like Dig Through Time, Treasure Cruise and Jeskai Ascendancy are still legal in league play after!

Eldraine Split Pearl Top 4:
History is being made as there will be a play off to determine the last of the top four in Pearl, between Andrew Cuneo and Andrea Mengucci.  The winner of that match will join Shota Yasooka, Shahar Shenhar, and Matthew Nass as they battle out for day two bye at Mythic Championship VII, the one where the Sephiroth kills Aerith.  I personally can't wait for Mythic Championship XV.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

When I took over the column from Pete, I thought this would be the easiest section for me to write.  It turns out that the prices are the easiest for me to write, and I really don't have an opinion on a lot of things in regards to Magic anymore.  Organized play changes?  They don't bother me, unless they change up what they are doing on MTGO.  Magic Pro League?  Not a thing I consume, so it's not a thing I can talk about.  Mythic Championships?  I don't watch coverage anymore.

I'd just rather play Magic.  Maybe this changes into a small strategy article each week and I don't have to paint myself into a corner with hot takes.  Sorry.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Standard seems to be all food for right now and Oko, Thief of Crowns has left people unexcited about the format. I had a feeling that WotC was going to take a half measure with the last ban, and while I understand that Oko moves product, sometimes, for the health of the game, you have to make a really tough choice. I haven't logged on to Arena in days thanks to Pioneer!

Brawl:  Out of the Commanders from the Brawl Product, Alela, Artful Provocateur was my favorite. I'm also excited to see that the Jund Brawl commander is seeing play in Standard. I think that is super neat.

Legacy:  It's like Sneak and Show, but instead with Eureka

Modern: Elementals got a huge boost with Core Set 2020, and with that boost came Modern playability!

Pauper:  Look at all of those beautiful Circle of Protections in the sideboard. I have long thought that those enchantments have been underplayed in Pauper.

Pioneer:  I have a friend that insists to run down Pioneer and calls it CEDH, like that's a bad thing. He's also sure the format needs dozens of bans, and then I see something like this 5-0 and I give my friend digital sideeye. That's not to say that this deck is bad, but come on, in a format that needs "dozens of bans" it's just weird to see that this deck, with Explosive Vegetation not get paired against one of those decks and then still win. Shrugs. I love rayban to death though, he's a good dude.

Vintage: I have no idea how this deck works, but it's around because of the Fastbond unban, and I appreciate that the creator of the deck did a podcast with Hipsters of the Coast, so hopefully, I can figure out how the deck works!

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Pioneer Challenge - oRS won the first Pioneer Challenge with Sultai.
Pauper Challenge - quinniac won with Burn.
Legacy Challenge - GodofSlaughter won with Temur Delver.
Vintage Challenge - ChubbyRain took top spot with Temur I don't know what to call it, but there are walkers and Tarmogoyfs.
Pauper PTQ - For rizzle, Phizzle brought the shizzle with Mardizzle.  (Phizzle won with Mardu aggro).
Modern Challenge - Name a more iconic duo than yamakiller and Tron. I'll wait.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Andrea Mengucci went over Mono Blue Devotion in Pioneer.
Frank Lepore calls Oko the Thief of Formats
Adam Yurchick calls Phoenix the best deck in Pioneer.
Joe Dyer has an interview with a new Vintage player.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: Some cards have gotten a Pioneer bump for sure, it was a bit weird to add some new ones to the list.  Teferi, Time Raveler is getting to be out of control, and some caution on Oko, Thief of Crowns as it feels like each day we move closer to the next ban, the price of the ban is baked in to the cost of the card. Dropping though is really nice.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Never mind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 18605. Last week, 18485.  That's 120 dollars up!  Thanks Pioneer, and thanks Joshua, for not buying a the basket full of cards you had in your cart before the price spikes!

In Closing

All I have wanted to do since Monday was jam games of Pioneer. I've streamed more, I've played more, and I have lost so much more.  If you think this week's column is bad, I'm so sorry, but I was way to busy playing Magic and actually enjoying myself.  I loved it.  I've felt out of touch with Magic for a while, and this has really rekindled things for me right now.  Will it be the same in a few weeks?  Maybe, maybe not, but I'm going to enjoy this great game for as long as I can.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
