State of the Program for November 5th, 2021
Modern Horizons 2: Drafts are returning to the client. They will run from November 2nd to January 5th.
Banned in Pauper: Faerie Miscreant
and Dwynen's Elite
have both been banned in Pauper until the fix for these cards is released in Crimson Vow.
Magic Online Champions Showcase: Nico Bohny won season 2 of the champions showcase with HammerTime. You can see the decklists for the 8 person event here.
Crimson Vow Previews: We're almost done with the previews for Crimson Vow. You can see the regular cards here. The variants, which feature Borderless, Extended art, Commander, Fang Bordered, Eternal Night and Dracula bordered cards can be seen here. You can see updated to The List here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is
here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:
Ongoing - Three weeks of Vintage Cube
November 6 - Pauper Showcase Challenge
November 7 - Legacy Showcase Challenge
November 13 - Modern Showcase Challenge
November 14 - Pioneer Showcase Challenge
Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: Corey won one of the largest events in the Paper world as we get back to holding events in the post vaccine world of the pandemic. Nature is healing!
Standard Best of Fun: This cleric deck looked like a lot of fun. Built to use
Pyre of Heroes
as a
Birthing Pod
of sorts, this may actually be bit better than the best of fun deck of the week.
Historic:
Legacy: I'm not entirely sure how this deck wins other than Karn and Saga tokens. It just looks so weird to me, but yet, Legacy is nearly foreign to me and the deck did win this past week.
Modern:
Urza's Saga
to me is just such a cool card, and a deck like this is where I feel like it really gets to shine the most in the Modern format.
Pauper: There are a lot of broken cards in Pauper right now, might I suggest a good clean aggro deck?
Pioneer: This deck has gotten a bit slower, but in exchange for that speed, it has added consistancy in the form of
Galvanic Iteration
which is really nice. Playing two copies of
Pore Over the Pages
can be backbreaking.
Vintage: I didn't think
Thought Monitor
would see play in Vintage because it doesn't seem exciting, but drawing 2 cards for a U mana seems like a really great rate!
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
WotC finally stepped in to make Pauper events not as weird right now, because (Faerie Micreant) is bugged and drawing a card for just casting itself right now. Maybe don't take advantage of known bugs on the client?

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: A couple of cards fell off this week, but otherwise Standard prices look to be pretty okay.
Modern Staples: Had a couple of cards from New Phyrexia jump on to the list this week. Modern Horizons 2 took a tumble, which has been much needed.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples:
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,054. Last week on my week off it was $27,600. Looks like we lost $546, most of which probably came from Modern Horizons 2 drafts coming back up.
Last week was a bad week, this week wasn't much better. The auto updater on the site is broken, we're working on my ADHD doseage, and moved it down a lot. My blood pressure was mainly good, but my heart rate was pushing 120 which is okay, but when it's closer to 70 it's noticeable and it bothered me a lot. I've intentionally missed my last two doses of the pill just to see if that helps out, so far, my blood pressure has went up, but my heart rate went back down. I hate this.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
