State of the Program for November 8th, 2019

In the News

Pioneer Bans: The first banned announcement happened after what one would hope to be a healthy lunch from Wizards of the Coast.  Felidar Guardian, Leyline of Abundance and Oath of Nissa join the fetchlands on the banned list.  For the reasonings, go here.

Pioneer Bans on MTGO:
Since the format is not going with the regular ban announcement for now, when a card is banned in Pioneer, it will be banned the day after instead of the day of the announcement.  Same goes for if a card is unbanned. Check out that news here.

Mythic Championship VI:
A tabletop Mythic Championship is happening this weekend, with coverage set to kick off at 9am before you are reading this article.  Here is the Survival Guide for the event.  It's Standard and Limited, but everything is going to be played as a 3/3 Elk!  Thanks Oko!

Oko Banned:
Oko was banned.  In Brawl.  On Arena.  That's it.  That's the bit.  You can read about it here

Magic: The Gathering added to Toy Hall of Fame:
Magic, along with coloring books and Matchbox Cars is joining the Toy Hall of Fame!  Congrats to Wizards of the Coast!

Star City Games dropping Legacy:
Breaking Thursday, StarCityGames announced that starting in 2020, they would be dropping Legacy from their Organized Play Open schedule and replacing it with Pioneer.  Legacy Challenges will still exist.  You can check out the full text here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

On Pioneer bans:  Was kinda upset that Felidar Guardian was paying for Saheeli Rai, because I figured that a Flicker creature would be okay in the format, and it would make further creatures like that harder to design while the walker was in the format. It keeps me from doing broken things with Panharmonicon and other enters the battlefield creatures, and that kinda sucks, because that is a fun thing to do.  Heck during the PTQ, I only beat Mono Green Devotion because I was able to Reflector Mage back every creature that they had in play (at least ten) thanks to two Guardians and a Panharmonicon.  I mean I guess I could have just won outright, but I hadn't found Saheeli yet, and that bought me enough time to eventually get there.

Oath of Nissa was Pioneer's Faithless Looting or Ponder and it getting the boot now instead of later is great. It was a good ban.  Had Leyline of Abundance actually cost 4 mana instead of being free, it would have been a fair card that no one played.  However with the amount of mana creatures in the format, it was also a good ban.

Next week might see more cards on it, I'd pay close attention to Nexus of Fate. It leads to the same terrible play patterns that stuff like Sensei's Divining Top did. Jeskai Ascendancy is also another card I could see watching, but it really hasn't put up results has it?  Regardless it is fun to watch Pioneer change week after week!

On Oko in Brawl:  Last week made 1v1 Brawl almost unplayable, unless you liked your commander becoming a 3/3 elk.  It's good it's gone in 1v1.  It's weird to me though that Arena, Paper and MTGO brawl seem to have a different banned list for the format.  I hope Brawl takes off, because it is a lot of fun, but it's one of those formats that is best played in a group setting, and that will be a thing that few arena only players actually get to experience.  Of course Oko didn't need to be banned in multiplayer because there is a lot more action with each additional player.  With the amount of hate that the Thief of Crowns gets, playing Oko almost seems like a liability.

On Star City Dropping Legacy:   The format, to me, seems like it is finally paying for the crimes of the Reserved List.  To me that is fine, the cost of entry to new players was huge, and according to Ben Bleiweiss, over on Reddit, players had stopped coming to play, and it was a change that was already years in the making.  This change might eventually happen to Modern, but without the Reserved List keeping them from reprinting important cards, it might not.  Had the Reserved List not existed, it's entirely possible that dual lands are affordable and Legacy grew and flourished.  That sadly is not the case, as I fear that Vintage and Legacy will now be left by the wayside for just Eternal Weekends, while Modern fills in the hole that Legacy left.

I don't blame Star City for dropping the format.  They are, after all, a business, and have to make the best decisions that keep them profitable.  It would hurt the community considerably more if they stopped existing, and cutting back on Legacy allows them to deliver the products that most players want.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: I'm not to sure about Standard right now, Pioneer and Modern has all my attention, but this deck at least looks cool?  For sure have no idea how it does against Oko, Thief of Crowns but maybe that won't matter in a few weeks?

Brawl
:  I was impressed with Korvold, Fae-Cursed King during the first Brawl event on Arena, and now that it is seeing Standard play, maybe there can be some cross over appeal for players?

Legacy:  I'm all about Eldrazi right now, much like Meghan Trainor was all about that bass not to many years ago.

Modern: Why am I all about the Eldrazi now? Simple, the core of the deck, silly monsters that do silly things is consistent across multiple formats. While the monsters are the same, the play styles are different. For Legacy it's prison. For Modern, Tempo Prison, and Pioneer, it's bringing the beats.

Pauper
: Thanks to Ulamog's Crusher you can play Eldrazi in Pauper as well!

Pioneer
: With this build in Pioneer, the answer to who is the beatdown is always you!

Vintage
: In Vintage Eldrazi are the muscle, so to say, of the tax collectors!

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Standard PTQ - xFile won with Sultai Food.
Pioneer Challenge - Playing with 8 banned cards seemed to do the trick for TacoFarmer this week, winning with Mono Green Devotion
Pauper Challenge - hampuse1 scored a dignified win with (Stonehorn Dignity) in their Tron Deck.
Legacy Challenge - Smiteon won with Turbo Depths
Vintage Challenge - cws won with Dark Petition Storm
Modern Challenge - genmatsu won with Simic Eldrazi
Pioneer PTQ - I was far to busy finishing 5-4 however, TrollingSaruman won with Nexus Reclamation.  You know, just in case you're wonder why Nexus of Fate is a 50 dollar bill again.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

The Masters of Modern talk about what Pioneer can teach the format.
SaffronOlive tries to make Maze's End work in Pioneer.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples:  Removed a lot of Standard cards this week, wanted to keep the table at five dollars and up and it got bloated.  Figured it was time to let that go.  Also had a super hard time trying to find Field of the Dead before I remembered that it was on the Pioneer table.  Whoops.  Welcome Nissa, Who Shakes the World to the list as well!

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 19005, last week it was 18605, that's a 400 dollar improvement!

In Closing

I am working on quitting smoking by tapering off of cigarettes.  Two weeks ago I was smoking a pack a day, today, I am down to 13 a day.  It's going pretty well!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
