State of the Program for October 11th, 2019

In the News

Banned and Restricted List Changes:  Monday came out with a new list, and nothing was added to it.

New Banned and Restricted Update Date:
Magic Esports tweeted out late Wednesday that due to the competitive gaming schedule and digital implementation, that the next Banned and Restricted list announcement would be moved up to October 21st.  As decklists for Mythic Championship V were due recently, some are seeing this tweet as a bit of foreshadowing in regards to the health of Standard.

Master's Edition Drafts Ongoing:
October 16th is the last day for this chapter in the alternative play book on MTGO. Try to draft a Force of Will!  If you need help we recently published a piece from Vincent here

Game Night, Release Dates and Other Stuff:
Game Night is coming back out, 5 precon decks, each with a new non-Standard legal card, like last year, designed for out of the box play.  Release dates for the next couple of sets came out, and are reflected below.  Throne of Eldraine Gift Edition looks like a bundle with a Piper of the Swarm promo card. Unsanctioned, a new box set releases in 2020, on Leap Day, included 5 30 card decks.  There are 16 new cards in the box set, and the decks are mono colored, meant to be mixed up with other decks to create different play experiences.  Mystery Boosters are also a thing, and we can expect to learn more at MF Richmond.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

This is actually hardest part of State of the Program for me to write every week.  The rest of the article is just so calculated that it is easy.  I mean, I find the news, recap it, update the special tournaments, find some decklists that look interesting and then work on the prices.  When a ban could happen that makes things a bit easier, because I can just talk about the ban, but when things could be banned and aren't it makes things even harder.

Field of the Dead is the newest card that has to be dealt with, and I knew a while ago that when Standard rotated, that it was going to be a problem.  Why is it a problem now and not when Scapeshift was in the format?  There are a lot of reasons, the format has slowed down just a touch since the mana is a little bit worse.  While we don't have perfect mana, have to rely on comes into play tapped lands instead of lands like Glacial Fortress has slowed the format down a bit.  A lot of solid aggressive cards rotated out.  We've lost Rampaging Ferocidon, Lightning Strike and Llanowar Elves so the slow format has been taken advantage of.  With the rotation of those cards we also lost possibly the most important one, and a card that could be easily played by any deck in the format. Field of Ruin rotating out and not leaving us with a safety valve for Field of the Dead is where things truly went wrong.  In other formats where one deck dominates, it's either because it's the clear best deck in the format (Think of something like Replenish combo from the early days of Magic), or because Wizards of the Coast didn't include a safety valve in the format (Think Eldrazi winter, when they were all over the place).  Now there are exceptions to this rule, sometimes Wizards can give us multiple sets worth of hate cards and the best deck still survive, which is what happened when Affinity came to Magic.  It's entirely possible that Field of the Dead would have done the same thing as Affinity and still warped the format around it, it's also possible that had we gotten an reprint of Field of Ruin or other ways to deal with this land that we're not dealing with an early banned announcement.  I'd reason that after seeing the decklists of Mythic Championship V that Wizards saw a real issue brewing and decided that a real change had to be made.  I like the card though, and just assume that it is going to be gone with this special early changes.

Of course, they could have made the change to say that they forgot to ban Mox Opal in the Modern format, so what do I know?

I think overall though, Play Design has done a really good job of finding stuff like this so formats aren't ruined, but sometimes, things are gonna change.  I would love to see that teams thoughts on things on Standard.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard:  To me it is weird seeing a true control deck in a format where Teferi, Time Raveler blows out countermagic. This also feels like it would struggle against Field of the Dead so maybe that is why I am writing about Magic and not playing it well.

Legacy
: Check out the copy of Castle Locthwain in the main deck here. It may not be the best, but I thought it was a rather clever inclusion here.

Modern
: Imagine my surprise when I saw a 5-0 Modern deck with Gilded Goose in it. To me this is just a really poor Birds of Paradise. However in this deck it is a cheap efficient way to attack and put an Ingenious Infiltrator into play. I'd like to see this deck do a bit more stuff with ninjas, but I really like how it looks so far.

Pauper
: Yeah so this deck is pretty much well known by now, but it changes Sage's Row Denizen out for Iceberg Cancrix, which is not only harder to remove thanks to it's extra toughness, but also faster to mill since it triggers off any snow permanent. You gain a lot of value from Arcum's Astrolabe as it is, but getting to mill as well, well, that's just great!

Vintage:  I do not know what the decklist name means, and this point, I am to afraid to ask.

Brawl
:  I have a feeling that Field of the Dead is going to be removed from Standard soon, thanks to there being no clean answer for it in the format, and with that, I also feel like Golos, Tireless Pilgrim is going to have a bit of an issue finding a place to hang out in the format. Thankfully, Brawl exists!

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Vintage Challenge - mstephenson won the event with Storm.
Standard MOCS - djbmppwns won with Bant Ramp, or is it Bant Food?  I am not sure but I assume food as Wicked Wolf shows up main.
Modern Challenge - Playing Emry Paradox, Zyrnak won the challenge.
Sealed PTQ - Ekan. won the PTQ, you can see the decks here!
Pauper Challenge - _DissonancE_ won with Stompy
Legacy Challenge - jacetmsst won with Temur

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Alex Ullman wrote about Mantle of Tides for Pauper play here
It may have been last week, but Daniel Fournier wrote a great guide for Mono Red Prowess in Modern.
Looking for sweet brews in a sea of Golos in Standard?  Check out this piece from Frank Lepore and this one from Ali Aintrazi.  Chulane, Teller of Tales is for more than Brawl!

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Gonna miss the big number this week.  I am however going to drop off last week's big number here, just so I can use it next time.  Last week the big number was 17535.

In Closing

Cassius has been here for the week, I have tried to write a bit of this article every day, but gosh I really like spending time with him.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
