State of the Program for October 18th, 2019

In the News

Mythic Championship V:  Yup, the next Mythic Championship will be starting today, 68 players are battling for fame and prizes.  You can see the metagame breakdown here.  All the decklists are posted here.  Casters, players and more can be found here.

War of the Spark Redemption Ending:
If you're looking to redeem some sets, make sure to do so before the 21st of October. Redemption policy is here.

Early Banned and Restricted:
Remember also on the 21st, we are getting another update to this list.  Maybe.  It's possible nothing happens. Hopefully something does, because I am not sure I can handle such a slow week again!

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

My ideal ban predictions are nothing happens in Standard, because a lot of people are hating on Field of the Dead and losing that card in a format full of planeswalkers seems like a disaster waiting to happen.  If something has to happen in the format thought, I would want to keep the land, and get rid of the tutor.  I love casting Golos, Tireless Pilgrim, but all the artifact does is tutor for the land.  What would I really want to happen though?  Add Field of Ruin back into the format.  There really should be a list of staples that just stay in Standard, and Field of Ruin would be an elegant answer that any deck could play easily.

What should happen:  Reprint Pillage and make it standard legal!

What will happen:  After dominating the Mythic Championship both Field and Golos are removed from the format, allowing Teferi, Time Raveler and Oko, Thief of Crowns to run over the format, thanks to the ramp deck that made 2/2s no longer existing. With a lack of Lightning Strike and a slowed down format, Standard is walked over until the next set release.

Modern:  Things seem pretty good for the most part now that the season has changed from Hogaak.  Mox Opal and now Mox Amber seem to be a little problematic, but nothing right now just leaps out and screams at me to be banned.

What should happen:  Both Moxes, Simian Spirit Guide and Ancient Stirrings are shown the door.

What will happen:  Nothing, like I said, Modern seems to be pretty fine right now for the most part.  Just let me cast Stone Rain or Time Warp in peace please.

Pauper:  Arcum's Astrolabe has proven to be a very powerful card that has done a lot of work in taking away the diversity of the format.  Ephemerate has helped with that a lot as a cheap way to double dip on powerful enter the battlefield effects in the format.  Monarch has erased some archetypes because catching up with that card advantage is really hard to do still, and well I just don't like Ghostly Flicker

What should happen:  Astrolabe, Ghostly Flicker, the Monarch mechanic and Ephemerate all get removed.  Snow Bogles with a Night's Hunt gets banned as a deckname.

What will happen:  Astrolabe and Ephemerate go away. Ghostly Flicker continues to be a problem that is excused by how much work goes into making it happen.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: During last years March Madness I was 15 for 16 out of the games played during the Sweet Sixteen and later part of the tournament.  The only one I missed was Kentucky and Auburn, and that game stung badly.  I figured what if I could try to call my shot for the MC.  With Unmoored Ego in the main, I feel like David Williams is going to have a huge advantage over the field.  Being able to have game one answers to Field of the Dead and Golos, Tireless Pilgrim is going to be great for him, and the Granted wish board is also incredible.  I feel like David just has the best deck in the event.

Legacy
:  This deck can attack from so many angles.  Monastery Mentor is still wonderful.  Energy Field and Rest in Peace is a super combo, and using Helm of Obedience gives this midrange deck a combo finish.

Modern
:   I would love to see more Narset, Parter of Veils in this deck, but am so far outside of understanding Modern right now that I have no idea of where to add more copies.  This will always be one of my most favorite Modern archetypes though.

Pauper
:  Alex Ullman has been singing the praises of Mantle of Tides for a while now on Twitter and over at ChannelFireball. Seems to have started to catch on a bit.

Vintage:  This looks like a deck that to me, shores up Shops weakness, which is running out of gas.  Skullclamp is just as busted today as it was back when it was first printed.

Brawl: I feel like Domri, Anarch of Bolas has kinda lost a lot of attention as a three drop walker with so many incredible three drop walkers in Standard now.  Oko, Narset, Teferi, The Royal Scions, and here comes Domri, just wanting to fight.  Fight on Domri, fight on.

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Legacy MOCS - Federusher went 8-0 with Grixis Arcanist.
Standard PTQ - Klimczur won the PTQ with Bant Golos
Legacy Playoff - SorboOne won with Temur Delver.
Modern Playoff - Dreddybajs took tron to the number one spot!
Sealed PTQ - Congrats to Rooney56 and their mono black number winning!

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples:   Lots of stuff is probably coming off the table next week as it looks like the format is starting to solidify.  With Mythic Championship V ongoing and a ban update on Monday, maybe that is having an effect on the price as well?

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 17500, last time it was 17535.  Down 35 in the last two weeks.

In Closing

The bulk was written on Thursday with a few bits coming in Friday morning.  Special thanks to Pete for all he does in helping me with the big number, he's such an outstanding human! I spent a ton of time this week trying to fill the emptiness of Cassius not being here, and failed, but did play a lot of video games instead of Magic.  Still all about My Time at Portia and State of Decay 2.  They are basically the same game with just graphical differences anyway.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.

"My ideal ban predictions are nothing happens in Standard, because a lot of people are hating on Field of the Dead and losing that card in a format full of planeswalkers seems like a disaster waiting to happen."

Ooops. So, disaster incoming? Any chance you'd make discussing this your next hot take?
