State of the Program for October 4th, 2019

In the News

Some Pauper Cards are Bugged:   Twitter users were reporting some pretty important cards in the Pauper format since the unification were no longer working on MTGO.  Cards like Desert, Unstable Mutation, Goblin Grenade, and Merchant Scroll were not legal in the format. As of October 3, 2019, a fix was introduced, so if you play Pauper on MTGO, and have been logged in since October 2nd, close the program, get the update, and enjoy the Pauper format!

Deluxe Edition Sells Out:  The newest premium product that Wizards of the Coast offered sold out in about an hour on Wednesday, much like your favorite band did in high school.  Priced at 449 (Are they out of their minds?), the product featured a lot of stuff.

My Little Pony Comes to Magic:  What is this a crossover episode?  Nah, this set of three cards will be available at HasbroPulse.com and features the cards, playmats and sleeves on Arena.  Called The Ponies: The Galloping, this set will benefit Extra Life, a sweet organization that helps the Childrens Miracle Network. You can see the cards at ign

Companion gets a Round Timer:  Sometimes the text to the left really tells you all you need to know about the news item I am going to present. That's right, the Companion Ap gets a round timer!  If you're in to this sort of thing, check out more information here

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

I am going to talk about Standard here, so I can have some words for the Hot Take Corner, and still have decks for the other formats in Cutting Edge Tech.  Going to give my quick thoughts about 5 decks that have caught my eye in the new format.

The first deck is the one I have played the most, Golgari Adventures.  I have loved playing this deck.  You wouldn't think that Edgewall Innkeeper, an easy to deal with 1/1 would do so much, but really this creature is just great.  I've mainly been paired against other grindy decks (think Golgari Mid) when I am playing this one, and honestly, the card just allows you to gain so much advantage over your opponent that they are buried in the cards that you have.  Nearly every creature in the deck has an adventure, and while you are gumming up the ground with small tokens, or small deathtouch creatures, you start to overwhelm the board with Lovestruck Beast and Rankle, Master of PranksQuesting Beast is a monster here, and if you run out of gas, you can restart the card drawing engine with Order of Midnight, Find or Once Upon a Time

The second deck, like the first, comes from the Sapphire Division.  Bant Food really takes advantage of Wicked Wolf and the food tokens that Oko, Thief of Crowns makes.  This two card combo basically turns the Wolf into an unstoppable machine in a format that few and far between on sacrifice effects.

Gruul Aggro is the third deck on the list today.  Taking advantage of the slow plodding three color decks and their mediocre mana bases, this aggro deck looks to serve up some hasty beats thanks to the Riot mechanic.  Ten creatures have riot naturally in the deck, while Robber of the Rich and Questing Beast have haste.  Pelt Collector looks to grow large quickly, while Bonecrusher Giant and Domri, Anarch of Bolas give this deck much needed removal and reach.

Hero of Precinct One a long time Esper staple has switched shards to Bant.  This allows the strategy to take full advantage of Hydroid Krasis and Trostani Discordant.  Who are we kidding though?  Oko, Thief of Crowns is the real reason to be in Bant and this multicolored deck can go from zero to what the heck just happened super quickly.

The last list for today is Jeskai Fires.  Fires of Invention is an incredible Magic card, and casting this on turn four, and then immediately playing a free Drawn from Dreams is almost unbearable card advantage.  This main phase control deck looks to land its namesake enchantment and then make life miserable with a steady stream of free Planeswalkers.  Fires of Invention allows you to take full advantage of Fae of Wishes, making it a brutal tutor that is usually cast for free, and then sees the card that it fetched cast for free as well.

Cutting Edge Tech

Legacy:   I love the look of this deck, casting Violent Outburst into Hypergenesis has to be some kind of a magical feeling, and honestly, I recall doing that years ago when it was Extended legal.  The last Extended PTQ I played in I lost my win and in match for top eight to Hive Mind.  Extended truly was a silly format.

Vintage:
Years ago whenever I last lived in Louisville (more than a decade ago actually), the players I lived with played Vintage, and did pretty well for themselves in the Starcitygames circuit.  This was the deck I played then. Well not exactly, as you know, new cards came out since then, but you know, outside of Karn, the Great Creator, it was pretty close!

Modern:
Wanna beat down and play fair Magic?  Well, I have a great deck for you to look at here!

Brawl:
This is probably where I am going to start off with in Brawl, you know as soon as I get the time freed up to actually play it, or any Magic at all I guess.

Pauper:
Do you know how hard it is to find a Pauper deck that doesn't run Arcum's Astrolabe?  I wonder why this deck doesn't do that.  Maybe it's the small amount of basic lands?  I'm not sure, but I feel like this deck could benefit from the artifact.

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Pauper Challenge: cha21 took Jeskai Snow to the top!
Legacy Challenge: D00mwake with Jeskai Stoneblade won the challenge!
Vintage Challenge:  ReneRandrup won the Vintage challenge with Jeskai Arcanist
Modern Challenge:  d_peliser ruined this round up and won the Modern challenge with Azorius Control.  Was just missing a red card.  Though I guess the Surgical Extraction in the board makes this Esper!

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Kendra Smith discussed any ban ideas before Monday's update.
Emma Partlow wrote about Budget Bogles at tcgplayer.
Emma Handy surveys the Standard format ahead of SCG Philly.

Jamie Topples drafts Throne of Eldraine.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 17535.  Last week the big number was 17320.  Throne of Eldraine surely helped that number out!

In Closing

Cassius was here last weekend, and we had a great time together.  It was weird though, because he took a nap after lunch on Sunday, and well, my child never naps.  He asked me to wake him up in 45 minutes, and when he fell asleep, I felt him for a fever, maybe he wasn't feeling good.  He woke up, we played a bit, and he was like, I'm laying back down.  I get my thermometer out, and he had a 101 fever.  He went home early feeling miserable, and that passed on to me this week.  I spent most of Sunday getting the site ready for the week, managing the articles that went up, scheduling some for next week (because he's gonna be here next week, and I wanna spend time with him), and trying not to get sick.

I got 2 out of the 3 done.  I was sick for a few days as well this week.

Also there may not be State of the Program next week, with Cassius being here, I do want to hang out with him for as much as I can, and today's State of the Program took 8 hours to write.  That is not a short time!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.

What intrigues me with the prices is utility over fashion. The modern-border P9 isn't even close to the chart, whereas all the versions of JtMS are within 1.5 of each other. Dark Depths is odd, 2 versions over 40, one about 30 and one under 20, all well stocked.
