State of the Program for September 13th, 2019

In the News

Playoffs capped:  Last weekend the Modern playoff reached it's cap, leaving a lot of players out of the event.  To fix this, Wizards is raising the player cap to 672 and offering bonus play off events for the rest of the 2019

Modern cube continues:
Running until September 26th, the Modern cube is up and ready to be played on MTGO.

Throne of Eldraine Spoilers continue:
You can check out my thoughts on some of them in The Hot Take Corner, or view the card image gallery here  If you want to see the Booster Fun images, you can click here I guess one of the neat reviews this cycle came from Game of Thrones actor, Isaac Hempstead Wright, best known for his role as Bran Stark, who revealed Kenrith, the Returned King.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

The Hot Take Corner

I hit on some Thrones of Eldraine spoilers last week, and will keep on with them this week. Just some brief thoughts about the cards.  Next week I'll talk about some rotating cards that I will miss, and then before we know it, we'll be playing with Throne!  I just picked out my favorites, or else this would have turned in to a full set review, and no one needs that.

At first glance, this feels like a win more card.  If you're casting it for 2 mana, you're already attacking with four creatures and you seem to be firmly in control of the game.  However, those four creatures might not be great so you may be using this as a catchup, taking out their best creature, and then fairly equipping it.  I think that this card is just great.

I like weird enchantments that do things.  For four mana we're eventually getting a ton of power worth of creatures.  While the random choice is fairly weird to me, I get why it is random.  The enchantment doesn't go away when all the modes are chosen, it sticks around giving you another creature each turn, like a powered up Assemble the Legion, and I enjoy how this card seems to capture a party.  This is for sure a four mana enchantment that you do not want to Donate or Harmless Offering!

Another three mana Planeswalker in a sea of them, The Royal Scions seem pretty powerful, allowing you to filter through your deck and gives you a nice game ultimate.  The second +1 is nice and not a thing we see often in blue, buffing creatures and such.  I'm excited to try this out, and I wonder if a deck with The Royal Scions can exist with Teferi, Time Raveler and Narset, Parter of Veils.  I can see a Jeskai deck with these walkers (Scions taking the place of Karn) doing well.

I put this card on Facebook.  Carl Wilt, a friend and writer for the site had some unprintable things to say about it, but rest assured, our resident Green Mage was excited to see this card on his feed.  The only drawback this card seems to have is being a Legendary, but the word soup that is contained in its text box is incredible.  Root Snare?  Rough beat, it does nothing!  Deals damage to walkers equal to combat damage?  Ya hate to see it!  Has a form of evasion?  Remember when Ravenous Baloth was thought to be power creep?

Free spells are a Pox on Magic: The Gathering, and I fear that this card will be no different.  In essence, a weird Land Grant, this card lets you find a creature or land in the top five and put it in your hand.  To me, this feels like a thing that will help push Tron in to the top of Modern again.  It's not going to replace the still for some reason, legal Ancient Stirrings but could squeeze out Sylvan Scrying.  While it may miss out on a Tron piece from time to time, the ability to get a creature makes this a bit better than Scrying to me.

I've seen people call this unplayable, but gosh it seems like it does well against a lot of widely played tribes in Magic.  Elves, Goblins, Merfolk, Humans and Elementals in Modern seem like great decks to have this answer against.  In Standard, Knights and Faeries are sure to be pushed, so I think this card is largely playable, and will be one of the sleepers of the set.

A Hero's Downfall that can potentially be used more than once, and be replayed after a shuffle?  Wow!

This might be the strongest card in Modern from the set.  Whirza seems to want a card that does this, and it can come out on turn one right?  Land, two zero drops and hello engine!

Hello Knight of Precinct One!  There are a lot of playable Knights across the formats I care about, and while it might be a bit to slow for Modern, this one is sure to be a card that people are forced to pay attention to in Standard.

This was shared on a Local Store's Facebook.  I called it a Staff of Domination on feet, and can't wait to figure out how to use this best in Commander. It will be the only legend I try to build a Commander deck around when the set releases.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Still not doing a Standard deck.  We'll get some new decks soon enough! Here is the Vintage Challenge Winning deck though!

Legacy
: Figured showing off the format championship winning deck would be great for Legacy!

Modern: I love Smallpox.  I also love decks that take advantage of it with Flagstones of Trokair!  I would have showed off the sweet Bring to Light list that won the playoff, but I already covered that here.  I am a coward for not running it again.

Pauper
:  This is very close to what I have been playing in Pauper.  I like the idea of Devious Cover-Up but rely on Curse of the Bloody Tome as a crutch.  Going to try this deck out.

Winner's Circle

The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
Modern Playoff:  ihavethefire won with 5 color Niv-Mizzet
Legacy Playoff:  Samwise_GeeGee not only has a top rate screenname but also won with Temur Tempo
Pauper Challenge:  Hellsau won with Snow Tron.
Modern PTQ:  With Mardu Death's Shadow Volollo qualified for the MC!
Vintage Challenge:  winedope took Goblin Charbelcher and won in Vintage with it, so that's pretty cool!

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: This is the last week that I will be tracking the sets that are rotating out, so say goodbye this week to Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, Core Set 2019, and Dominaria.  Next week in The Hot Take Corner, I'll talk about the cards I'll miss as they rotate out, surely to land in bulk boxes as they become forgotten to time.  We added Omnath, Locus of the Roil and Cavalier of Night to the tracked list this week.

Modern Staples:  The prices of Modern Horizons cards needs to be addressed and needs to be done so sooner rather than later.  Hopefully Wizards will add these to Treasure Chests, but that is another thing that needs to be revamped.  No one should prize a league and then open a Springjack Pasture.  I did that, and felt like I was punished for playing.  In other news Spell Snare has joined the list, as a pretty nice answer to Stoneforge Mystic. Summoner's Pact, a popular way to find Primeval Titan, has also joined the list.

Pauper Staples:  I played a lot of Pauper this week.  Format is a lot of fun to me, but that's because I like decks that look the same, but have different threats.  Arcum's Astrolabe has allowed for perfect mana, which allows for a lot of similar cards in decks.  It reminds me Pokemon or Hearthstone or VS System, where the powerful neutral cards were played by nearly everything, and the only thing different was if you were GCPD, or Pikachu or Hunter.  Prismatic Strands was added to the list this week.  Also added Land Grant as a nod towards Eternal formats where it is thriving.  I need to save room on other tables too!

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-promo, non-foil cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.
