State of the Program for September 13th, 2023
MTGO Socials: Daybreak has set up forums for MTGO, which you can find here. In addition to the Forums, Daybreak has set up a Discord for MTGO. You can get the invite here. MTGO has a Twitter account, and can now add an account for Facebook and Instagram.
Two-Factor Authentication: This is in Account Settings. To turn it on you will be asked for your account password and a 6-digit code sent to the email associated with your account. You can use either an email or authenticator based system. This will help keep your accounts secure, you can read about the system here.
Redemption: Redemption is up and running! Remember that redemption runs now until supply is gone. Currently being redeemed is The Brothers' War, Phyrexia: All Will Be One, and March of the Machine. Wilds of Eldraine Redemption Tokens will go on sale on October 4th. As of May 23, 2023, Redemption Tokens are non-refundable! You can check the new redemption page here.
Deck Brewer's Pass: This is getting extended on day and for 24 hours on Thursday, you can enter the promo code WILDELDRAINE in the MTGO store and get a day pass to the Deck Brewer's pass! This is a bit of an acknowledgement of dealing with the small issues that popped up around launch, like the 60 card limited deck size or a few cards that needed hot fixes.
Wilds of Eldraine 64 player Drafts: The popular pods are coming back, with a non phantom entry fee (20 tickets or 200 play points) and the prize structure remains the same from the previous 64 player events.
Patch Notes: You can check out the notes for this update here.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

I'm not going to speak for the writers and staff at PureMTGO, which at this time is basically me and a handful of other creators, but I do want to offer condolences to the family, friends and fans of Sheldon Menery. We both wrote together at StarCity Games, back when he was known as a judge, I was known as a grinder that wrote a really bad article that had fan favorites telling me to kill myself, and 5 Color Magic was the big deck style of casual magic.
I'm still around, writing bad articles, but not grinding anymore, 5 Color is kinda still around and Sheldon isn't but always will be in the game, thanks to not only his contributions as a judge, but as the driving force behind Commander.
I met Sheldon in Minnesota, the format was Invasion block constructed, and it was the first time that I had byes. I was excited, I got to spend time with my partner, see some family and catch up with friends that I made when I lived in Minnesota. The first thing I did though when I got on site was make a beeline to the judges. I wanted to meet Sheldon and talk about our writing. We had a writing group at the time, not like a forum, but probably closer to a forum, where we bounced ideas off each other. I found him, introduced myself and he was so welcoming. Through the weekend he would check in on me, and others. He was kind, friendly, and devoted to making Magic a better place and game. He delivered on those.
Sheldon was an incredible human and will be missed.
Standard: Yup, it's really weird seeing a lot of cards that should have rotated out still in Standard lists.
Bramble Familiar
seems like it is well positioned to do some work in the format.
Legacy: The Saturday Legacy Challenge and Super Qualifier saw a lot of cards from Wilds of Eldraine enter the format.
Beseech the Mirror
a super tutor makes the most sense but
Up the Beanstalk
is a card advantage engine,
Questing Druid
is a dream for tempo decks, and while it's not in the set proper, this update also brought us
Comet, Stellar Pup
. You can see the decks in the links before, but this week, I am bringing you a Mono Black
Leyline of the Void
and
Helm of Obedience
combo deck.
Modern:
Agatha's Soul Cauldron
made an appearance in the first Modern Challenge of the weekend. It seems like a really cool addition to the Yawgmoth Counters deck.
Not Dead After All
showed up in the Modern 96 challenge.
Up the Beanstalk
was in Modern as well. A big surprise to me was seeing
Sleep-Cursed Faerie
in the Izzet Wizard deck. A 3/3 for U with flying and Ward 2 seems like a great value, even with the three stun counters it comes in to play with.
Pauper: I was expecting to see
Embiggen
make an impact on Pauper, and I did not see it at all in any of the Challenge lists. I didn't see any Wilds of Eldraine cards in the challenge lists either, so have a copy of Selesnya
Ephemerate
instead I guess.
Pioneer:
Gumdrop Poisoner
and
Questing Druid
saw a little bit of play in Jund Sac decks. Druid was also in Gruul Aggro builds joining
Goddric, Cloaked Reveler
and
Ruby, Darking Tracker
.
Up the Beanstalk
saw a lot of play in
Bring to Light
and
Enigmatic Incarnation
decks.
Blossoming Tortoise
gave Mono Green Devotion a new toy to play with but pilots of the deck aren't sure it's an auto include yet.
Vintage: Yeah, you better believe that
Beseech the Mirror
was in the Vintage Challenge.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Wilds of Eldraine cards have been added to the list.
Invasion of Gobakhan
is off of the list.
Modern Staples:
Blood Moon
has come off the list, not a surprise with it being a bonus sheet reprint.
Eternal Staples:
Pioneer Staples:
Bonecrusher Giant
is back on the list.
Drannith Magistrate
is new to the list. Is it because of the amount of Adventure based spells now? Maybe? I don't know!
Skyclave Apparition
is off the list.
Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me). This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Prices were done Tuesday night!
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
