State of the Program for September 13th 2018

In the News
Ravnica Spoiler Season Starting:   Guilds of Ravnica previews are here. A long time ago, I remember seeing a multicolored set and being blown away by Putrefy. Well, now I’m blown away by Assassin’s Trophy. The set looks amazing. The official card image gallery is here. Spoilers elsewhere. You can find them if you try.

And that’s all the news: Not really, but very little news has happened this week. Not counting all the info on Guilds of Ravnica – but if I start talking about that, I’d have no idea where to stop. Also some paper stuff, but State of the Program concentrates on MTGO.

The Timeline
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online PTQs each weekend, with qualifiers running the three days prior to the PTQ.

Wizards will be streaming a number of events next year, including all four Pro Tours, the Magic Championship and World Magic Cup, along with 35 Grand Prix. Since Wizards does not schedule premier events on prerelease weekends and certain holidays, that means they will be streaming an event nearly every weekend. Here’s the schedule we have so far.

·       Weekend of Sept. 23–24: 2018 Magic World Championship and Team Series Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada (exact event dates TBD)

·       Oct. 13–14: Grand Prix Denver
·       Oct. 27–28: Grand Prix Lille
·       Nov. 3–4: Grand Prix Atlanta

·       Nov. 17–18: Grand Prix Milwaukee
·       Dec. 8–9: Grand Prix Liverpool
·       Dec. 14–16: World Magic Cup in Barcelona, Spain

2018 Magic Online Championship Series and other events
Complete details, including schedule, rules, and which online events qualify you for which online or paper events is here. In addition, Wizards will be offering these special formats:

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 25 Tix / 250 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are here. Start times are:

Opinion Section:  A New Set!
We are starting to see Guilds of Ravnica cards.  I am really tempted to do set review, at least a partial one.  I remember that I once railed against (Scalpalexis), claiming that it was unreasonably good.  It wasn't - even in limited.  I have spotted at least 240 of the last dozen decent combo engines.  I have hit on some cards, but they tend to be obvious.  It's not credit to have spotted Snapcaster Mage as being a great card - everyone and their brother could see that one.

Still, I really want to do a complete card by card for the entire set.  I'm sure my editor wouldn't mind....

We'll see once the set is out.

Cutting Edge Tech
Standard: We are just a couple weeks away from a major rotation. Standard decklists from this week’s play have no real value. Players playing Standard now know what they want to play, or they are waiting for the new meta. We will see new decks soon enough.

Modern: The biggest Modern event last weekend was probably the MTGO PTQ.  Well, not counting the team Modern, but since that was team unified constructed, those decks may not be optimal. This deck may not be optimal offline, either – it wins against Ironworks and the like by timing them out.   But I love Martyr of Sands, so here you go.

Legacy: The Legacy Challenge showed a metagame that’s very blue. Here’s one example.

Vintage: Last weekend’s Vintage Challenge was won by an apparent merfolk player who played (Paradoxial Outcome) with a Moonfolk. Erayo is kinda nuts.

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for over a decade now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Staples: Standard prices are pretty stable as we head towards rotation.

The following is a list of all the non-promo, non-foil cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is pretty stable again this week. And a Black Lotus is back over $100.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately $ 18,390. That’s up about $130 from last week. Nice.

In Closing
I ran a Modern tournament last weekend. Burn won. Great mix of decks.  Fun event, even if I couldn’t play.

Prerelease coming soon.
