State of the Program for September 4th, 2020

In the News

Zendikar Rising Spoiler Season:  Zendikar Rising spoiler season started this week.  Kicker, Landfall, and Full Art Lands are great.  Double sided lands seem cool, the party mechanic seems like it is giving us a preview of something coming up next year, and Omnath swallowed another color of mana.  You can find who is doing previews here.  The Card Image Gallery is here.  The variant gallery is here.

The next year of sets:  In order we're going to Kaldheim,   Scholomance Academy, Strixhaven.  We'll have adventures in Fallen Realms as Dungeons and Dragons crosses over with Magic and takes the place of Core Set 2022.  Innistrad is seeing two sets next year as well.  We're also getting Time Spiral Remastered, with a sweet bonus sheet that shows off the original frame.  Modern Horizons 2 will reprint the enemy colored fetches at rare, Secret Lairs are coming as well, Yargle Day might still be up, and The Walking Dead is getting their own one as well.  Check out the recap here.

Magic Organized Play Updates:  They are here, I again had my eyes glaze over, so if this is a thing for you, check it out here.

Pax Online with Pastimes:  Coming for ten days, Pastimes and Pax Online are hosting what looks like some pretty sweet events.  They are teaming up with WotC again to provide MTGO accounts stocked with cards as well.  Check out the information here.

Foam Chandra: Ever needed a life size foam Chandra?  Got 1200 dollars burning a hole in your pocket?  Part with it here!

Magic Story in Web Fiction:  After a few sets without any story going along with it, Zendikar Rising has web fiction again

Play Activity Survey:  I am pretty sure this is the same survey as last week, but if not, well here you go.

Zendikar Rising Set Mastery:  Here is all the information you need about the pass for the next set.  57 booster packs are included in it.  Check it out here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Around the Web

MTGOTraders YouTube:  Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday?  Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here

Card Prices
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard Legal Sets: This table tracks the cost of a single copy of every card in each Standard legal set, plus Treasure Chests and the current booster pack. I’ll keep tracking these because they are interesting (at least to me).  This is being kept as a small tribute to Pete!

With rotation rapidly approaching, this will also be the last week I track the rotating sets that are leaving the format, and the last week I track both Modern Horizons and Double Masters.

The Good Stuff
The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO.  The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.

Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $24,671.  Last time, the number was $24,780. Down 109, but rotation is happening and people that own cards that are rotating are due to dump them soon enough.

In Closing

Spent the past weekend with Cassius and my nephew.  So much Fortnite was played.  We were trying to get the victory brella for getting a win in the new season, and after finishing 2nd so many times, Sunday morning in the second game we played we got it.  This season's BattlePass is all about Marvel Comics, so I had to buy it for myself, and honestly, I was tired of using default skins.  While Cassius is gone though, I have to level up two passes.  Got them both up to level 28 on Wednesday.  In between all the Fortnite action, I have started to play a lot of Battlegrounds on Hearthstone.  When the new season started a friend logged on and challenged me to a race to Legend.

I had forgotten that Hearthstone is more than Battlegrounds.

I am anxiously awaiting for Arena to have a Magic version of Battlegrounds sometime in 2026.  I kid, though a Magic Battleground play mode would be hecking sweet.

I also finished in the Mythic ranking for the first time ever last season.  Looking forward to balancing that grind with some MTGO soon!

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
