Stronghold was a very fun set when it was first released in 1998.  You had themes that carried over from Tempest, like Shadow, Buyback and Slivers.  The set expanded on Spikes and the en-Kor redirection ability which coupled with guys like Angelic Protector and Worthy Cause made for infinite life a possibility in tournament magic.  Stronghold also had some of the very best commons in a small set!  Mana Leak and Shock both got their starts here before joining the core set in all of it's glory.  Fling, Mulch and Mogg Flunkies all saw serious play and now with the impending release of the set on MTGO, it's time to revist theme decks!

Yeah Stronghold had theme decks when the set first came out. We're off course, looking for another pauper theme deck this time around, and here is what the fine folks at WOTC are looking for!  This next part is very important, because it is the rules for the Stronghold Precon Project!

The deck should be competitive but focus on fun. This means that creative and interesting decks are more likely to win then decks that just cram in as many tournament staples as they can. Wizards of the Coast will make its decision based on the deck that it believes embraces this mantra the best.

The Timeline:

Deck building contest: All decks must be submitted by Monday, March 2nd at 9:00AM PST. Any decks submitted after that will not be considered. The winning deck will be announced no later than Thursday, March 5th.

Deck naming contest: After the winning deck is announced, all deck names must be submitted by Monday, March 9th at 9:00AM PST. The winner will be announced by Friday, March 13.

Prizes for each contest will be delivered when Stronghold releases.

The Rules:

Pauper Deck:

  •   The deck must be exactly 60 cards

  • The deck must be 2 colors.

  •   The deck cannot be G/R, B/W, U/R since these are the color combinations of the existing Stronghold theme decks

  •   The deck can only contain commons

  •   The deck may not include more than 3 copies of any given card (excluding basic lands, of course)

  •   The deck may only include 3 cards that have more than 2 copies

  •   The deck may not contain more than 15 total copies of cards from Tempest (excluding basic lands, of course)

Prizes:

Deck Naming:

4 Copies of the Deck
1 standard set of Stronghold

1 standard Tempest Release Card

1 standard Stronghold Release Card

Deck Creation:

4 Copies of the Deck

1 premium foil set of Stronghold

1 premium foil Tempest Release Card

1 Premium foil Stronghold Release Card

The winners will need to provide their name, email, and Magic Online user name to validate their Magic Online accounts before receiving their prizes. Employees of Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, and the hosting sites are not eligible to win.

Please use the comments field of this article to submit your deck name and your deck contents as you finish them.  No entries that are submitted after Monday, March 2nd, 8:59 AM  PST will be forwarded on.  No exceptions.  Ditto for the naming part of the contest as well, except they will end at 8:59AM Monday, March the 9th.  No exceptions.

IMPORTANT: When you submit your Name and/or Deck PLEASE INCLUDE A WAY TO GET A HOLD OF YOU!  Either an email address, or an MTGO username, or some way that we can contact you and verify that YOU are the right person to get the prize!

(Time for the fine print - WotC employees and employees of PureMTGO or www.mtgotraders.com are NOT eligible to participate.  This does NOT include writers.  Meaning that if you only write for PureMTGO, you are allowed to participate in the contest!)

We look forward to seeing your deck ideas!

Mr. Clator, do you happen to have any info on strongholds release?

Last time by hamtastic at Mon, 02/23/2009 - 19:05

Last time, the contest ended about two months before the release date. That would put the Stronghold release around mid-May if it follows the same time-frame.

That's just a guess based on the timeline last time. It's possible that it will be faster this time, or possibly even slower, but that would be surprising.

MTGO name: GnomesofZurich

Deck name: Disturbed Earth

This deck is designed to exploit the graveyard filling ability of Mulch and Morgue Thrull, to rapidly get a number of "silver bullet" creatures into the graveyard, and then be able to "tutor" for what is needed using Tortured Existence. Gravediggers and Disturbed Burial helps get the creatures back. Rats of Rath ensures a steady stream of creatures are going to the graveyard to benefit Sadistic Glee, which can be put on one of the Shadow or Flying creatures.

Creatures (21):

I like the way WotC is handling it this time - deck creation before the name, so that they can have the coolest deck, and then select a suitable name. I also like the instructions and criteria are much more explicit this time around.

Thanks WotC, and thanks Heath as well.

Deck Name: "The Rat King of the Arena Ring"

Tempest: 13 cards
Stronghold: 25 cards
Lands: 22 cards
13 swamp, 9 mountains
------------------
Total: 60 cards

The diet:
3x Lab Rats
3x Cannibalize
2x Sadistic Glee (Tempest)

The conditioning:
3x Seething Anger
2x Spinal Graft (Tempest)

The entourage:
2x Mogg Fanatic (Tempest)
2x Mogg Flunkies
2x Rabid Rats
2x Duct Crawler
2x Foul Imp

The shady character:
2x Dauthi Marauder (Tempest)
2x Dauthi Horror (Tempest)
2x Dauthi Slayer (Tempest)

The FIGHT:
2x Shock
1x Stun (Tempest)
2x Fling
2x Death Stroke

The End
2x Mob Justice

Life simple. Start with a shady character, plenty around the arena ring to be found. Feed a diet rich in rat and more rat. Mental conditioning: make him angry. Make him more angry. Send him into the ring. Use dirty tricks and fling at enemy.
Shady characters and their entourage are naturally slippery. But the coup de grace is building a Rat King. Start with rat, make him eat rat, more rat, more rat. Make Rat King angry, and win with big Rat King and little rat mob posse. That's rat justice.

Deck Name: Some Fling Wicked

This deck tries to put on some early pressure with creatures that have good power to casting cost ratios. Then it tries to fling those creatures at the opponent's face. It has several little combos like pumping your power and flinging or raising your toughness and flowstoning. It has a lab rats just to give you some late game and also because it would be fun to use lab rats a bunch and then play Mob Justice. Brush with death gives you even more reach and late game. The Gravedigger disturbed burial/tortured existence is there to give you some card advantage.

Deck Name: Counterspiker (UG)
Description: This deck, based on the spike creatures introduced with Stronghold, seeks to sneak an evasive creature through an enemy's defenses. The spikes provide that the normally modest damage of such hard to block creatures turns from modest to deadly. Stronghold's premier counterspell, Mana Leak, along with some friends from Tempest, serve to protect your creatures while you evade through for the killing blow.

Hi,

Here is my current submission based on a very aggressive build which puts the pressure on early with efficient creatures, as well as controlling the board with plenty of removal. My 3 groups of cards that I was able to up the count to 3 copies rather than 2 copies are more beneficial than most I chose are Mogg Bombers has a serious aggressive body and if dealt with it rewards you with your opponent taking a Lightning Bolt to the head and can easily gain advantage off recursion with Gravedigger and Tortured Existence. Tortured Existence benefits your late game draws with upgrading the creatures you draw and putting potential threats on board, who likes to draw Duct Crawlers on Turn 10? The main finisher in the deck is Rolling Thunder and can deal with needed damage or if drawn out with a similar mirror match then it can be devastating for lethal damage. I believe this deck can be quite competitve as well as fun in many aspects regardless if the goal is to be aggressive.

The concept behind my 'Swift Submission' deck entry is the creation of a fast paced red and white aggro deck that quickly overpowers an opponent. I believe this deck would be fun to play for novices and experienced players alike. The deck relies on a few key card interactions to overcome the opposition. Here are a few ideas of the type of play that would allow for the maximum benefit from the cards listed:

Creatures With Evasion (Soltari Foot Soldier, Soltari Trooper, Soltari Lancer, Skyshroud Falcon) + Attack Instant Pumps (Seething Anger, Blood Frenzy)

Creatures With First Strike (Advance Scout*, Youthful Knight) + Attack Instant Pumps

Creature Removal + Disruption (Shock, Pacifism, Smite, Stun, Master Decoy) + High Powered Attack Creatures Relative To Cost (Mogg Flunkies + Hill Giant + Flowstone Shambler)

Finishing Damage Cards (Shock, Mobb Justice, Blood Frenzy, Seething Anger)

If the draw for this deck is good I would hope that with a bit of cunning a 5th of 6th turn victory is possible. Look forward to seeing other people's ideas and wish the other entries the best of luck!

I misread the amount of copies of 3 we are allowed in the deck. I now realize that 3 copies of 3 are allowed instead of 2 and therefore,

I would rather there be:

3x Soltari Foot Soldier W
1x Soltari Lancer 2W

Should help get the Mogg Flunkies in action! :)

A straight forward deck idea for heavy competitors and new players alike

(1) Drop all your critters as fast as possible (2) Beat to the face whenever possible - included are a bunch of cheap fatties (3) Combine attacks with Flings, Shocks, Combat Effects, Rolling Thunders, or a Mob Justice for the win. Dark Ritual added for speed or the beefed up Rolling Thunder (or turn 1 Serpent etc.). Speed and constant pressure are the key here. Welcome to Suicide Kisses, the pauper version.

Honestly been working on this all morning...

Simple strait forward deck use evasion to get your opponents life total down as low as you can before they set up. Then continue the assault with evasion using your direct damage and removal to keep them on their heels. For decks that pack removal fling provides more direct damage to their face or a fine finisher when combined with a pumped creature.

Imagine my surprise after utilizing Gatherer - besides green, blue has the
most creatures that fulfill this requirement!

The name of this deck is 'Endangered Life' for the effect it will have
on your opponents.

A nice selection of fat creatures (based around the Endangered Armodon's
"ability") with a smattering of permission and mana acceleration. Additionally,
it possesses some of U/G's brand of "removal" in tapping, bouncing or provoking
your oppenent's blockers and has some late game reach with the buyback spells
and leap/shadow rift for the final points in a creature stall.

Background: The deck runs a tight counterspell suite and good early blockers in Horned Turtle, Canopy Spider and Lowland Basilisk,to survive the early game. It is capable of playing large threats such as the Endangered Armodons quickly thanks to the mana acceleration and aggressive costing of the bigger creatures. The mana ramping also allows consistent access to pay the buyback cost of the blue-board controling spells of Capsize and Mind Games

These stratergies allow the deck to survive the early game and control and win the late game.

Deck Name: Tortured to Death

This Deck is based on my favorite common ever, tortured existence. Never before has a cards name been so accurate in describing it's effects on my opponents. This deck is truely a rarity, a pauper control deck that doesn't resort to the trickery of counter spells. Instead it revolves around using a number of strong recursion cards in combination with creatures with comes into play abilities which you want to recur or defensive abilities which allow you to stall for long enough to win with things that grind at your opponent's life total relentlessly like Brush With Death and Skyshroud Falcons. Besides, with all these creatures flying into and out of graveyards it isn't going to be long before that Lab Rat with Sadistic Glee becomes too much for your opponents to handle.

The point of this deck is more about fun than winning. First of we have 8 creature with evasion. The goal is to make them big with your spike. The en-kor also interact with spike really well since you can redirect damage first than remove the counter. It forces your opponents t make the hard decisions as well with cards like mana leak, diabolic edict and combat decisions with rootwater hunters and rabid rats. But beware as you make the wrong decisions and it could very easily cost you the game.

En-Kor Encore - explanation for card choices by Ivo at Wed, 02/25/2009 - 12:45
Ivo's picture

If I was to name the deck I created, I would go with the punny (pun-funny) "En-Kor encore". One can say it is sort of a pauper, UW Kor-trol deck :)

This is quite different from the other UW suggestion so far, which is an aggro control deck and only has 1 Kor creature (by Whiffy).

I opted on only going to 3x on both available en-Kor creatures. The Kor creatures, as stated in the article, were rather defining cards from Stronghold and some actually saw tournament play in an "infinite life deck". So I decided on building a deck around them, although there is already a Kor deck (Call of the Kor, the WB deck), the existing Sliver pre-con didn't stop WotC from choosing a very Sliver-centric deck in the last pauper contest.

So, forming the "Kor" of the deck:
3x Nomad en-Kor (blocks regular creatures)
3x Spirit en-Kor (also blocks fliers, or can swing for 2 over ground blockers)

In the rest of the choices I wanted to have an "encore" feel of repeated effects - Buyback is a memorable mechanic from Tempest block. I also wanted to have synergy with the Kor creatures.

Starting with the Stronghold choices (most of the deck)

2x Contempt (repeated bounce - encore - you can put this on your creatures for some expensive pseudo-vigilance)
2x Dream Prowler (mostly because of the toughness, for the Kors; thus it can start attacking alone while still providing defensive benefits)
2x Hammerhead Shark (it is a good blocker)
2x Mana Leak (a bit of permission)
2x Sift (a bit of card draw)
2x Smite (this deck likes blocking - other cards can prevent their weaker creature(s) from attacking, then you block and smite the strongest)
2x Tidal Warrior (mini-combo with Hammerhead, Sea Monster, so the deck isn't just about the Kors)
2x Venerable Monk (mini-combo with your own bounce, including Contempt; particularly nice with Capsize after blocking)
1x Change of Heart (buyback - encore - some synergy with Smite)
1x Mind Games (buyback - encore - some synergy with Smite)

Then I added 12 Tempest cards for some variety, and some effects that are unique and go well with the deck

2x Capsize (buyback - encore - versatile, good on your blocker that gets all the Kor damage, particularly Monk or one of the 1-drop creatures)
2x Gaseous Form (put it on something of yours, and ALL Kors can redirect combat damage to that guy to be prevented, turn after turn)
2x Manakin (a bit of mana acceleration, useful to be able to buyback)
2x Sea Monster (huge blocker, good for Kors, and synergy with Tidal Warrior)
1x Anoint (buyback - encore - I included at least 1 of each common buyback spell of the right colors)
1x Horned Turtle (it is a good blocker)
1x Master Decoy (repeated effect - encore)
1x Pacifism (a bit of removal)

Due to the heavier blue requirements (and some of the blue stuff needing UU to cast, or in Mind Games to pay the buyback) I completed the deck with more islands than plains.

Use Mulch and Morgue Thrull to fill up your graveyard so you can recur them with Gravedigger and Disturbed Burial. Tortured Existence lets you trade creatures in hand for your toolbox of cards in the graveyard. Need a removal spell? Lowland Basilisk can do a fine impersonation. Want to pump a creature? Keep recycling Spike Colony and Spike Worker. Just keep bringing back those creatures and soon you'll crush the opposition.

Actually authenticsimpsonian independently arrived at the same conclusion as i did (and beat me to it by half an hour). Recurring creatures is the most fun and i have always loved Tortured existence. Authenticsimpsonian deck presentation is awesome but i believe my deck is a little better designed, namely because of mana count. This deck needs a critical number of mana to begin recurring the graveyard and for that i believe overgrowth is superior to rampant growth and the deck has 2 more mana producing elves, the skyshroud elves and 2 other possible ones, the seekers. Anyways, the deck idea is pretty solid and i wouldnt mind if you give the prize to that fine fella but i think this is the more correct build.
Oh, and this decks name has a pun so bad i know Rosewater would be proud.

Behold the power of shock troopers! Featuring 12 creatures with either shadow or flying accompanying hyper-efficient creatures, this deck uses speed to its advantage. Capable of either laying down a large amount of creatures that overrun the opponent or simply holding back while letting one or two slip around the opponent's defenses, this deck supports a large number of combat tricks.

If faced against a deck that focuses on power over toughness, Mogg Fanatic and Shock can be lethal in clearing the opponents field. Against decks which favor high toughness cards, Blood Frenzy is actually really good, as it causes the creature to die at the end of the turn. Also not to be taken for granted is smite, which stops all creatures cold if you can block them. Fling can also end games in combination with Blood Frenzy or Seething Anger, doubling damage dealt by a creature.

I figured since this was going to be a cheap deck, new players would buy it as a starting point. As such I went with simple cards to help new players learn the interface without weird boxes popping up. A good number of these cards are in 10th edition and therefore standard legal. That will make it easier for the purchaser who has only this to start with to build a standard deck as well.

This deck is called "Crushing in Defeat". Im afraid its basically just like another deck posted above, but it does have a few differences.
You'll ramp up mana with Overgrowth, Skyshroud Ranger, and Mulch, filling your graveyard at the same time. Then, get down a Gravedigger or play disturbed burial + buyback for one of a toolbox of creatures. Morgue Thrull allows you to dig deep into your deck, and Dauthi Horror gives you a strong play against pesky Soltari decks. Both Spike Colony and Spike Worker act as pump, and give you a combat trick (damage on stack-> move all counters to put a trade in my favour).Theres some removal, like Lowland Basilisk and Dark Banishing, and finally a Rootbreaker Wurm, to end games fast.
Mana won't be an issue in this deck, but I've included a full 24 lands, just to be sure you'll have some accelerant for your Skyshroud Rangers.
Also, i felt that more than 1 Tortured Existence is too many. Any spare are very unfun, as you havn't only drawn something useless in terms of your recursion engine, but you cant pitch it to your first Tortured Existence, making it a loss on both levels. Rabid rats didn't make the cut for a similar reason. It's not fun *just* having attacks in your favour. You want your creatures to die and be reborn, or simply be gigantic enough that they don't die to anything short of Dark Banishing or triple-Shock (at which point, you just bring it back anywway). While the rats can be pitched to Tortured Existence, with there being only 1 they're not going to be relevant in the majority of cases.
Brush With Death and Lab Rats give you something to do with masses of mana in the late game, and also gives you a bit of space against control attrition decks.
Sadistic glee is a winner in this deck. Even though it's an aura and therefore at the risk of losing card advantage, if you can get it on something black (to avoid a Dark Banishing) and have enough creatures to get around Diabolic Edict, you should be allright. Generally, Dauthi Horror is the best creature for the job, but Dungeon Shade can outshine it, depending on the matchup.

The full list:

2 Disturbed Burial [TE]
1 Tortured Existence [ST]
3 Mulch [ST]
2 Overgrowth [ST]
2 Dark Banishing [TE]
1 Broken Fall [TE]
1 Brush With Death [ST]
1 Lab Rats [ST]
2 Provoke [ST]
1 Sadistic Glee [TE]

2 Gravedigger [TE]
3 Morgue Thrull [ST]
1 Spike Colony [ST]

1 Lowland Basilisk [ST]
1 Heartwood Dryad [TE]
2 Skyshroud Troopers [ST]
1 Dauthi Horror [TE]
2 Spined Wurm [ST]
1 Rootbreaker Wurm [TE]
3 Skyshroud Ranger [TE]
1 Canopy Spider [TE]
1 Dungeon Shade [ST]

13 Forest
11 Swamp

The deck curves out nicely, with Skyshroud Ranger on turn 1, Mulch as the most relevant play on turn 2, and provided theres land enough, you can drop a Morgue Thrull (or even Overgrowth into Morgue Thrull) on turn 3. Where you go from there depends on the quality of the hand, but generally I'd beat away with the Thrull, sacrificing it with damage on the stack, and churning out Gravedigger and the Thrull again. You really want your utility creatures to be in the graveyard, where they can be retreived by Disturbed Burial et.al, but at the same time, you don't want to waste damage you could be getting in.

Anyway, I hope you all like it, it really is a blast to play.

Just so nobody get's jumbled in the "The deck curves out nicely" section, you sacrifice Morgue Thrull when it would die anyway, not just whenever you can chuck it out. Unless of course you have the mana to play both gravedigger into a reclaimed thrull, in second main phase after attacking with the thrull.
sorry, just thought i'd clear that up

UB Night Raid by Lemt (not verified) at Thu, 02/26/2009 - 09:39
Lemt's picture

This deck is a UB aggro deck.
Story-wise, it represents a group of creatures assaulting a fortress at night, hitting fast before the alarm is rung and your opponent can call for his defenses. Because of this, it has a great array of cheap, efficient creatures, that can either fly over the enemy's defenses or sneak amongst the shadows. It also has some means of stopping the enemy from getting onto his feet, by either countering whatever they try to do, or viciously killing any early oppossition.

This is a BG deck that takes advantage of your graveyard. You use mulch and morgue thrull to get your creatures in your graveyard while tortured existence, gravedigger, and disturbed burial to get your card advantage engine going. The spike creatures work really well with sadistic glee. The point of the deck is to make any creature you have a threat. There is plenty of synergy within the deck. Evincar's justice is a clean up spell that allows you to get your opponent's tiny creatures off the board. Death stroke and dark banishing ensure that your opponents do not put anything too big in the way of your guys. Rootbreaker wurm is your fallback plan because he functions well by himself.

Stronghold cards
2x tortured existence
3x morgue thrull
2x spike worker
3x mulch
2x lowland basilisk
2x death stroke
2x skyshroud troopers
2x skyshround archer
2x rabid rats
Tempest cards
2x gravedigger
3x disturbed burial
2x rootbreaker wurm
2x spike drone
2x dark banishing
2x evincar's justice
2x sadistic glee
Land
13x swamp
12x forest

Endangered Species

This is a green and blue big creature deck that bounces/counters away opposition or provokes them into a lowland basilisk, while swinging big. This deck features Endangered Armodon, a 4/5 beater that is sacrificed if you control any creature with a toughness of 2 or less, but only costs 2GG. To get around this problem, creatures of 1 or 2 toughness must have disposability built in such as Spindrift Drake, which has an upkeep of U, Thalakos Seer which can be sacrificed to draw a card, and Thalakos Mistfolk which can be returned to top of your library. Since it is no longer useful, you might want to Sift that away for something bigger. Cards like Crossbow Ambush and Leap give you a way to block flyers or fly in with a big creature to win.

Stronghold Pauper Deck Submission by Travis Kuster (not verified) at Thu, 02/26/2009 - 17:43

Deck Name: Mitigation

Okay, so I've seen an alarmingly small amount of WU decks, so it's possible that my idea is totally off base, but it seemed like an entertaining one, so I went with it. Basically, it involves preventing damage... all damage... or at least as much as is humanly possible, and then picking away at your opponent with evasion. It started by centering around the Kors, but since there are only two different ones available, it has expanded quite a bit.

Mitigation:

Creatures(18):
3x Spirit en-Kor
3x Nomads en-Kor
3x Honor Guard
2x Soltari Foot Soldier (Tempest)
2x Soltari Trooper (Tempest)
2x Soltari Lancer (Tempest)
2x Cloud Spirit
1x Mana Leak

Spells(22):
2x Samite Blessing
2x Bandage
2x Smite
2x Anoint (Tempest)
2x Pacifism (Tempest)
1x Circle of Protection: Black (Tempest)
1x Circle of Protection: Blue (Tempest)
1x Circle of Protection: Green (Tempest)
1x Circle of Protection: Red (Tempest)
1x Circle of Protection: White (Tempest)
2x Leap
1x Mind Games
2x Tidal Surge
2x Mana Leak

The whole reason I decided to build this deck is that I could imagine how entertaining it could be to completely stop damage of any sort (yes, I know, this does not include loss of life), no matter where it is coming from, or who is doing it. Imagine your opponent declaring an attack with his giant, 7/7 Sliver Queen - you send up your lowly Nomads en-Kor to block it, and spread out all of the damage among your vast army, thus insuring the survival of all, and thwarting your opponent's attack. Then, on your turn, you crack him in the head for a few with your unblockable and/or shadow and/or flying creatures, just like you've been doing for the whole game. It seems highly entertaining to me.
