Stronghold was a very fun set when it was first released in 1998.  You had themes that carried over from Tempest, like Shadow, Buyback and Slivers.  The set expanded on Spikes and the en-Kor redirection ability which coupled with guys like Angelic Protector and Worthy Cause made for infinite life a possibility in tournament magic.  Stronghold also had some of the very best commons in a small set!  Mana Leak and Shock both got their starts here before joining the core set in all of it's glory.  Fling, Mulch and Mogg Flunkies all saw serious play and now with the impending release of the set on MTGO, it's time to revist theme decks!

Yeah Stronghold had theme decks when the set first came out. We're off course, looking for another pauper theme deck this time around, and here is what the fine folks at WOTC are looking for!  This next part is very important, because it is the rules for the Stronghold Precon Project!

The deck should be competitive but focus on fun. This means that creative and interesting decks are more likely to win then decks that just cram in as many tournament staples as they can. Wizards of the Coast will make its decision based on the deck that it believes embraces this mantra the best.

The Timeline:

Deck building contest: All decks must be submitted by Monday, March 2nd at 9:00AM PST. Any decks submitted after that will not be considered. The winning deck will be announced no later than Thursday, March 5th.

Deck naming contest: After the winning deck is announced, all deck names must be submitted by Monday, March 9th at 9:00AM PST. The winner will be announced by Friday, March 13.

Prizes for each contest will be delivered when Stronghold releases.

The Rules:

Pauper Deck:

  •   The deck must be exactly 60 cards

  • The deck must be 2 colors.

  •   The deck cannot be G/R, B/W, U/R since these are the color combinations of the existing Stronghold theme decks

  •   The deck can only contain commons

  •   The deck may not include more than 3 copies of any given card (excluding basic lands, of course)

  •   The deck may only include 3 cards that have more than 2 copies

  •   The deck may not contain more than 15 total copies of cards from Tempest (excluding basic lands, of course)

Prizes:

Deck Naming:

4 Copies of the Deck
1 standard set of Stronghold

1 standard Tempest Release Card

1 standard Stronghold Release Card

Deck Creation:

4 Copies of the Deck

1 premium foil set of Stronghold

1 premium foil Tempest Release Card

1 Premium foil Stronghold Release Card

The winners will need to provide their name, email, and Magic Online user name to validate their Magic Online accounts before receiving their prizes. Employees of Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, and the hosting sites are not eligible to win.

Please use the comments field of this article to submit your deck name and your deck contents as you finish them.  No entries that are submitted after Monday, March 2nd, 8:59 AM  PST will be forwarded on.  No exceptions.  Ditto for the naming part of the contest as well, except they will end at 8:59AM Monday, March the 9th.  No exceptions.

IMPORTANT: When you submit your Name and/or Deck PLEASE INCLUDE A WAY TO GET A HOLD OF YOU!  Either an email address, or an MTGO username, or some way that we can contact you and verify that YOU are the right person to get the prize!

(Time for the fine print - WotC employees and employees of PureMTGO or www.mtgotraders.com are NOT eligible to participate.  This does NOT include writers.  Meaning that if you only write for PureMTGO, you are allowed to participate in the contest!)

We look forward to seeing your deck ideas!

This is a blue/green big mana deck. It features lots of buyback spells, as well as a fair number of mana producing creatures. The idea is to defend yourself and build mana until you can drop something big like a spike colony or an Endangered Armadon. It also has the combo of basilisk and broken fall. In order to support armadon, there are a minimum of x/1s and x/2s. Also, when getting ready to post this, i see that my deck is similar to the person above me, but i really didn't look at it.

This is a deck that likes to do things over and over again, getting extra use out of its spells and creatures. Buyback spells ensure you have something to do all the time, and there are lots of them - one reason why the deck packs a lot of mana, with a couple of Manakins helping you ramp up. Graveyard recursion means you won't run out of creatures, with Gravedigger getting a hand from Contempt, Disturbed Burial, and Tortured Existence to keep your critters coming back from the dead. Meanwhile, Mind Games and Twitch make sure you always have a target for Death Stroke, and Twitch gives your Rootwater Hunters and Manakins a second chance to do their thing. And with an active Capsize, your opponent will be doomed to repeat his mistakes.

A little something I came up by Anonymous (not verified) at Thu, 02/26/2009 - 20:14

A little something I came up with to help with ideas.

I noticed that there are CoP's, and Whim of Volrath (changes color words) in Tempest/Stronghold.

I'd go through the trouble of building a deck around this, but I don't play MTGO, so blaah.

I don't play MTGO, either. by Travis Kuster (not verified) at Thu, 02/26/2009 - 22:22

I don't play MTGO, either. However, I figured it might still be cool to have my name on the winning decklist.

I'd be crazy to not at least try this contest, and people who have known me for a while in PDC know I'm a big GW fan, so that's exactly what I tried to build. However, it's not really an aggro build (we already have a GR deck), so instead I'm aiming for something a little more interesting: the Spikes! Yes, by manipulating +1/+1 counters and using cards to slow down the pace of the game, you can keep your creatures from dying, build up a team of fatties, and go in for the kill when your opponent can no longer hold back your forces! It's a bit mana-intensive, but the added mana fixing should help keep you well supplied and ready to face the world...of pauper.

Every good set comes out with a good B/U deck.
This is...

Subterfuge!

1x Lotus Petal
1x Manta Riders
2x Lab Rats
1x Rabid Rats
1x Tortured Existence
1x Contempt
2x Mana leak
1x Counterspell
3x Dark Ritual
3x Manakin
2x Diabolic Edict
2x Death Stroke
1x Dauthi Horror
2x Foul Imp
2x Torment
2x Brush with Death
2x Sift
3x Dream Prowler
2x Endless Scream
1x Tidal Surge
1x Mind Games
13x Swamp
10x Island

Use the Manakins and Dark Rituals to accelerate your mana, fuel the buyback costs of Brush with Death, Mind Games, and Lab Rats, and fuel the X cost of Endless Scream to boost the power of your unblockable Dream Prowler or shadow-powered Dauthi Horrors (which will also be used as defense against your opponents shadow creatures.)

Use Death Stroke, Diabolic Edict, Mana leak, and Counterspell, Contempt, and Torment to rid yourself of opponents threats before they deal serious damage to you.

The highlights of this deck are supposed to be Dream Prowler with Endless screams and "new" Buyback cards.

This deck focuses on the size of the critters more than their abilities. The goal is to have bigger beasts than your opponent and then - with the use of your unusual combat tricks - force them to fight "mano a mano". Your opponent should never know when his creatures will be blocked or have to block.
Most of our creatures are tough enough to satisfy Endangered Armodon and thus we should be pretty safe from Pyroclasm-style effects.

- 2x Samite Blessing [Stronghold]
- 1x Seething Anger [Stronghold]
- 2x Shock [Stronghold]
- 3x Smite [Stronghold]

General ideas behind this deck design, yet to keep it casual and fun.

Damage redirection is accomplished by the en-Kors and the en-Vec, along with buyback on Anoint and dumping on creatures like Honor Guard, Samite Blessing, and Conviction. Furthermore, Mounted Archers provide some flier defense until removal arrives.

Removal comes in damage dealing and pure removal spells, such as Aftershock and Smite.

Game winners are accomplished with Seething Anger and buyback, as well as late gaming the Rolling Thunder. Delaying tactics with the en-Kor's and the Master Decoys should be able to get you there.

I really wanted to get 2x Squee's Toy in here as well, but just can't seem to fit it in. Probably overkill anyways, so best left out.

This is a Green/Blue Deck that features large creatures and spells designed to get them through. It has some early game in the form of Skyshroud Ranger and Horned Turtle, then moves on to drop the fat like the massive 6/6 Rootbreaker Wurm and the Mighty Spike Colony. When it comes down to slowing your opponents down and clearing the path for your fatties there is plenty of choice! Hi guys! My name is Dave Meeson and I write the budget column at Star City Games. I got my Magical start with Tempest and have very fond memories of the Tempest and Stronghold precon decks. I hope my decks do the originals justice!

2 Crown of Flames
1 Flowstone Blade
1 Rolling Thunder (Tempest)

Thanks to the guys here at PureMTGO for hosting this challenge; it was a lot of fun to think about. My column on these decks will appear at SCG on Tuesday!

Stronghold Pauper Deck Submission by Amar at Mon, 03/02/2009 - 06:31

TENTATIVE TITLE: Go Big or Go Home

ATTITUDE: Endangered Armodon is a powerful card that deserves a home. But you must be at least this tall to take him for a ride. Hence a deck with big tough creatures, and enough mana left over for big tough spells with buyback. And plenty of tricks along the way. In addition to buyback there are draw spells and cantrips to keep things busy. It plays comparable to Ramp Decks of various eras, with early-to-late flexibility via Buyback.

Creatures (17):
3 Endangered Armodon
2 Skyshroud Troopers
2 Spined Wurm
3 Lowland Basilisk
1 Hammerhead Shark
1 Dream Prowler

2 Trained Armodon*

Drawing and Accleration (8)

Stronghold Pauper Deck Submission 2 by Amar at Mon, 03/02/2009 - 07:37
Amar's picture

TENTATIVE TITLE: Growing Pains

ATTITUDE: This deck is based around the everlasting recursion of Tortured Existence. There are a bunch of combos in the deck, but the big 3 cards are Mulch (putting creatures in the Graveyard) + Tortured Existence (to turn any creature in your hand into anything that's been "milled") + Gravedigger (also to get back a card, and gain advantage you can use forever). You can play a Spike creature, move all his +1/+1 counters onto another creature, and then bring him back to make any creature as big as you want! Supporting this theme are other cards to give +1/+1 counters, and evasion creatures to deserve them.

DECKLIST:
Enchantments (3):
3 Tortured Existence

Creatures(22):
3 Gravedigger*
2 Spike Colony
2 Spike Worker
1 Spike Drone*
1 Skyshroud Ranger*
2 Morgue Thrull
2 Dauthi Horror*
1 Dungeon Shade
2 Lowland Basilisk
1 Coiled Tinviper
2 Rabid Rats
2 Skyshroud Archer
1 Seeker of Skybreak*

Spells (13):
3 Mulch
1 Disturbed Burial*
1 Sadistic Glee*
2 Provoke
1 Cannibalize
2 Death Stroke
1 Diabolic Edict*
1 Dark Banishing*
1 Coersion*

Land (22):
9 Forest
12 Swamp

------------------
STATISTICS:
Mana Curve:
1: 8
2: 15
3: 9
4: 4
5: 2 (3 with Buyback on Disturbed Burial)

Cards from Stronghold: 24
Cards from Tempest: 14 (exlcuding land)

COMBOS:
* Mulch / Morgue Thrull + Tortured Existence / Gravedigger / Disturbed Burial for choice of creatures
* Spike Colony / Spike Worker / Spike Drone + Tortured Existence / Gravedigger / Disturbed Burial for recurred +1/+1
* Spike Colony / Spike Worker / Spike Drone + Dauthi Horror / Dungeon Shade for large evasive creature
* Spike Colony / Spike Worker / Spike Drone + Sadistic Glee to grow a creature as you kill your own spike.
* Mulch + Skyshroud Archer to play lands faster

// NAME: Bombing Raid

2 [SH] Seething Anger
2 [TE] Disturbed Burial
2 [TE] Blood Frenzy
2 [TE] Kindle

I was aiming for a relatively low curve, consistency, and something the available lands could support. Foul Imp would be great, but given the building constraints, Death Stroke seemed necessary, and Dauthi Slayer was a definite. So I kept it to those two for the only cards with two of any mana in their casting cost. For this reason, Flowstone shambler and Craven Giant made the cut, because they're relatively solid options, and work well with fling.

Fling and Mogg Bombers made were the theme cards, and provide a backbone of sorts allowing for some great synergy. You can swing with a shadow creature, Pump it with seething anger or Blood Frenzy, fling it, and trigger a bomber. Similarly you can swing in with a furnace spirit and fling it. Disturbed burial provides a quick way to grab Mogg Fanatic, Mogg Bomber or other creatures, and combos with Tortured Existence to repeatedly recur creatures.

Shock, Kindle, and Death Stroke make for a cheap removal suite, and a little burn.

The general game plan is to swing in with shadow creatures, drop some bombers and flunkies, pump and fling guys for a pretty fast kill.

Deck Name: Desperate Measures

Sometimes, going to war with the army you have is a good thing. The creatures in this deck don't have a lot of toughness, but they don't need it! With cards like Dark Banishing and Diabolic Edict destroying your opponent's creatures and cards like Duct Crawler and Dauthi Marauder stopping them from blocking, your high octane monsters can attack unopposed. And when they do, bad things start to happen.

3x Lightning Elemental
1x Servant of Volrath
1x Flowstone Giant
2x Dauthi Marauder
1x Endless Scream
1x Crown of Flame
1x Dark Banishing
2x Diabolic Edict
1x Lowland Giant
1x Rolling Thunder
2x Craven Giant
2x Duct Crawler
2x Dungeon Shade
2x Fling
2x Flowstone Shambler
1x Lab Rats
2x Furnace Spirit
1x Seething Anger
3x Serpent Warrior
1x Shock
1x Tortured Existence
1x Torment
1x Foul Imp
1x Mogg Fanatic
15x Mountain

THIS IS
UNFAIR!
This deck focusses on hard-to-stop attakers, which are paired with a hard-to-break-through defence. This combination gives you a edge in the late game, because they can barley get through but your creatures are almost unstoppable.
