  • Making mistakes, so you don't have to I: A foray into pauper.   11 years 48 weeks ago

MTGO really needs to figure out a solution to the infinite combo issue, as the lack of the ability to do something online you can easily do in paper changes formats. They need to allow a macro to be created for an action or SOMETHING. Nobody wants to play this deck because it is obnoxious and nobody wants to play AGAINST this deck because it is equally obnoxious. If they want to start integrating the paper and online experiences (which they claim they plan on doing more with V3) then this is a big area they need to address.

Just a minor addition really, but it's worth noting that the infinite draw combo works just as well with a Prophetic Prism as a Mulldrifter, given all the extra mana.

I just wanted to mention how true the speed of play and speed of computer are. I've "won" games against the blue post decks simply because they couldn't kill fast enough and I didn't concede. It's another area where using the shortcuts really helps and most players (from my experience) don't use them.

My gripe with the current and beta clients is that there is too much useless confirmation and notification. Yes I want to close that scene, and as long as it won't cost me anything (eg the match or tix) just do it without asking me if I want to do it and without making me click through another window telling me you did it (eg when cancelling a trade).

I think a lot of players need to have a taste of this humble pie.

The article politely and accurately points out important facts:
Too many of us think we're better than we really are.
Too many of us are reluctant to admit our mistakes.

I hope to see more articles from Edwin as he continues his foray.

MTG Salvation Wiki is the answer. :)
There's everything in there, even background stuff.

I don't follow novels or any kind of story, but I like to know how the general background of the game works, the multiverse and so. Which, admittedly, is just the most convenient background for this kind of game: there are infinite (?) planes, each with its one "theme", and a bunch of planeswalkers that travel back and forth for whatever reason, mostly because they like to. Like, Jace went to Ravnica recently essentially on vacation! (Ravnica is probably the Las Vegas of planeswalkers).

Yeah the good ole middle of combat terminus is one of the few tilting things that have happened to me in this format. I think overall I disliked the miracle mechanic.

I understand your point, countermagic has been weaker than it ever has been and to me it felt a little bit like overkill!

  • Magic 2014: The Tribal Evaluation   11 years 49 weeks ago

They had a Llanowar Elves with multiple Elves (7th Edition), then they reprinted it in M10 through M12 and it was back to a new art with just one elf.

I think everybody here is trying to be the one who knows better, but the truth is that we're grasping at straws. Ask Rosewater via Twitter maybe, he might give an answer at some point (and if this answer has already been given, please provide a link to it to settle the issue).

It's probably true that they prefer card names and art to match, but probably untrue that this is anything more than an afterthought for them when designing a card or a set.

As for the flavor of Power and Toughness, I think 1/1 shouldn't be necessarily see as indicating a single individual. They're not "lives". It's an assessment of that card's ability in dealing and resisting damage. A group of many harmless old men is a 0/1, as it tooks just one professional soldier to kill them all. For the same reason, I've no problem with Hill Giant or a War Mammoth being 3/3 (the power creep of creatures since then has of course a part in that), because they might be big, but they can't fight, so a reasonable able human-sized warrior can easily manage to dodge their attack and kill them, which is something lores and fiction often describe.

  • Into the Unknown Wilds: Triple RoE Draft!   11 years 49 weeks ago

It hurts to see so much black open. I think getting passed Consume the Meek is a huge signal, I would've jumped into black for that. Green is overdrafted anyway, so it's better to be in the open color than to try and stay in an overdrafted color. I think your biggest downfall was trying to make green happen for some reason. You aren't ramping into Eldrazi so the mana you get from Nest Invader and Ondu Giant isn't fully used, and you already have Prophetic Prism for fixing. You probably would've had a more consistent deck if you had gone into white or black (not both) in pack 2.

  • Yawgmoth's Soap Opera - Episode 95 - The Best a Man Can Get   11 years 49 weeks ago

While seeing you guys try to build a R/W Combo deck for Classic would be hilarious, I would go with Prison as the archetype that is probably most likely to see success.

As for Spell Snare, it gets played a lot in Vintage these days (I believe the trend started with the Bomberman lists). With Moxen, a turn one 2cc spell is much more likely on turn one so being able to lay an Island on turn one and counter their first-turn play is pretty big. Mental Misstep is strong in Vintage, obviously, but not as strong as in Classic with Brainstorm and Mystical restricted. It's also completely dead against Shops, whereas Snare can counter a Sphere. It's also good against Standstill, which is much more important in Vintage then in Classic.

  • Magic 2014: The Tribal Evaluation   11 years 49 weeks ago

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. They clearly aren't looking to get rid of all cards that represent multiple creatures, as there are examples of this all over the most recent block, such as Basilica Guards and Clinging Anemones.

You'll note that Goblin Diplomats includes a pair of goblins in the art. The 4 devils in Innistrad also depict multiple creatures in the art. The same is true of all the recent cards with plural names.

Birds of paradise is trickier. The original did depict a group of birds, but the other versions are a single bird. I wouldn't be surprised to see the card reprinted, but I'd expect the new art to include more than one bird.

The way I've heard it, what they are trying not to do is have a plural name with only one creature in the art. For some creatures, this creates flavor issues, for example, how can even as few as two elves seem like 1/1 together?

  • Magic 2014: The Tribal Evaluation   11 years 49 weeks ago

    What about Birds of Paradise?

See also, on this very set, Goblin Diplomats.
And pretty much half the Devils they printed in Innistrad.
