As far as I know, Calavera is correct. Nippon is just the term used for the country inside that country. Also, if I'm correct Andrea also recently completed his Level 1 judge test recently! If so, congratulations Andrea!

And PhotoBucket "solves" the problem by truncating the video. The last few turns wind up with him O-ringig a token, playing a blocker, Day'ing the board and going down to 5 life in the process. I top deck up to three lands in play and Earthquake for 2. He plays a creature making almost ever draw in my deck lethal: Any land activates Searing Blaze Any burn + earthquake wins Goblin Bushwhacker allows the win via Summnons Essentially any non-creature wins me the game and goblin bushwhacker does too. I draw a Scalding tarn and Searing Blaze him out of the match.

uh.... nippon is not an offensive term in America to my knowledge (nor by any web research). It is what Japan is called in Japan.

Gah, the video was too long for YouTube and evidently too much video for vidilife. :/ I found a different hoster and have uploaded the video there. It should be all good now. Thanks!

Personally, I applaud any deck that can find a way not to run Tarmogoyf. Since I don't own any, I understand the frustration of looking at decklists and seeing 4x Goyf and thinking, so much for that idea.

  • Waiting for Godot: Rising to the Challenge, Pt. 2 (ROE #1)   15 years 6 weeks ago

That is so true. People tend to forget that Eldrazi Spawn can attack. They may be 0/1, but might of masses doesn't care. I've made that mistake from both ends in drafting Rise. Once I chose not to block a 0/1 and it got pumped for 8. Should have seen that coming. Why else would someone attack with an eldrazi spawn unless they had might of masses in hand. This also makes for a hand fake out as well.

  • National Qualifiers Metagame   15 years 6 weeks ago

Andrea might not be from America so he may not understand that "nipponic" is an offensive term here. I was a little shocked to see that myself. Can't say much about the article. Reads like every other tournament report. Jund = good. Yup, we know that.

  • Waiting for Godot: Rising to the Challenge, Pt. 2 (ROE #1)   15 years 6 weeks ago

In R3G2, the turn where you cast Pelakka Wurm, you could have won the game on that turn. He's at 13, you have 9 creatures to his 2. You tap the Battlement and all of your Mountains to play Emrakul's Hatcher, netting you 4 more creatures. You give the Hatcher haste with the Rampart, and swing with team. At this point you have 13 creatures, so whatever he doesn't block you can give +13/+13 and deal him lethal damage.

I look forward to the counter arguments for Tarmogoyf. I know conventional wisdom dictates the use of tarmogoyf as I have personally bore the brunt of some negative comments and curses via MTGO recently. BTW thanks to everyone that has offered to loan me a play set of tarmos.

  • A Look At Legacy: May 5 - 12 ... Threshold   15 years 6 weeks ago

How do you feel about the reanimator matchup?

I'm using the posted main deck with the Serendib Efreet replaced with a 4th Lightning Bolt.

I assume that you bring in:
    3 Spell Pierce
    2 Tormod's Crypt
    2 Relic of Progenitus

Is that correct? If so, what do you take out?

I've lost both times I've played against reanimator in the tourney practice room, and I didn't feel like there was much I could do. If you can stop their first go around at it, your clock isn't fast enough to take them down before they Show and Tell or reanimate a fatty for a second attempt that you most likely can't stop.

I assume Reanimator brings in Show and Tells expecting your GY hate. I'm guessing you're going to say having the white splash build would be better, because they choose white with Iona and you can steal/bounce it. I've seen some people use Curfew, but that doesn't stop them from naming blue.

I'd rather have 4 crypts than the 2 relics, but I'm assuming relic is better against dredge.

Man I have so many questions about sideboarding lol :( I could keep going and going. The 4th bolt seems to make Goblins a bye and it kicks zoo in the buttocks.

I love the deck though, it's fun. I keep trying to figure out if Legacy has some sort of Paper/Rock/Scissors theme, but from what I've found it's more like everyone is playing different kinds of Scissors haha. You can't defend against everyone. I used to play Enchantress, but got sick of autolosing to ANT/Reanimator lol.

Nipponic lands??? Just making things up now are we?

  • State of the Program - May 21st 2010   15 years 6 weeks ago

While I sympathize with those who feel short changed by WotC's policies in regards to foreign players they are sadly somewhat bound by their attorneys and the laws of the very countries of the people who are complaining. If you don't like the way your nation does business change it. I know that isn't a helpful thing to say for most people since the average person has trouble just changing politics on a local level much less a national level. All the same change starts somewhere.

Grats on the Level 1 judgeship. Nice to meet you, your honor. :p Seriously though I expect great things. I have to say I am somewhat disappointed in ROE so not surprised that the rares are plummeting. It would be nice if you had more indepth information on what is taking off in Zen. All I see are 5 cards that are already hot on this SotP.

    BTW what video?

  • Semi Pro - 5 Things That Keep Good Players From Being Great   15 years 6 weeks ago

Welcome! I agree with your practice/meta deck section especially - I think I spend more time on my sideboard strategy than I do anything else, after all, it is 2/3rds of the damn game! Wish the "tournament practice" room would FORCE games to be best of 3. Playing single matches is for those of the inebriated persuasion :)

  • Fun with Pestilence   15 years 6 weeks ago

It's about time someone puts in Grim Harvest main. I've played against this deck plenty...with lots of different decks..it's pretty damn solid. However, a cop red isn't as 'slam dunk' as you may think - a simple Flaring Pain is a 2x answer for big damage swings...Cop is damn good, but don't let your guard down!

Morgan's Rockslide has a ton of removal and is a good option that is FoWless. NO_Glove's bgw rock (3-1'd) list has a KotR land package,Mystic package and is very versatile. Also Hahaucare has a Deadguy ale like rock list with less duders and more discard he has taken into the money a few times.

  • Limited Times #1 - M10 Draft   15 years 6 weeks ago

I think you should have run 1 or 2 more plains in that build. Do you need 12 blue sources to reliably hit your double-blue spells? No, 11 would do fine, and you could take a chance on 10 and usually be ok. Whereas each plains you add in increases the value of your two Armored Ascensions.

Regarding holding mana for Howl. The less cards he has in hand, the more correct a play it becomes to try and sneak the Sphinx in there and start the clock on him. With one card in hand, your chances are pretty good - he needs it to be in hand or his next topdeck. Whereas if you're going to hold back starting the clock till you're at NINE lands, you could easily be giving him 3-5 extra draw steps or more to draw into the Howl. Plus maybe, as in this case, draw into some other useful cards.

If he has 4-5 cards in hand, holding Negate mana open becomes more worth considering. If you're at 8 lands rather than 7, it also seems a little more worth of consideration.

And yeah, take Air Elementals to win, not rares you don't need.

  • Flavor of the Shake Turning Putrid and Trolls into Delicious!   15 years 6 weeks ago

That depends on your play style. I guess enchantress is a viable option. Rock type builds always are awesome. Mono red painter made a showing in the DE last night. The list is endless I suppose. There is always DnT as well.

  • Flavor of the Shake Turning Putrid and Trolls into Delicious!   15 years 6 weeks ago

im still trying to look at deck types that don't run FoWs to play test them and give some reports. you have any suggestions on which deck i should possible run next?

  • Flavor of the Shake Turning Putrid and Trolls into Delicious!   15 years 6 weeks ago

Animator has a hard time countering anything thru 8 Cabals= their counter suite. Getting Blazing is not sure fire either; they dredge into Nacros to block untill Bounce/DReturns on Duplicant can be played. Iona on Black also means you must be at a good life total, not too many Nacro's out,Have FoW and this still allows Blue bounce and 8 Draw spells to fuel Ichorids and Tokens and simply outrace.

Landstill plays no KotRs Not sure they even play Bog. Maybe Slide? Yeah, i am not a fan of Ray unless it's vs Oath.

  • Rogue Play - Wrapping Up the BYOS Season   15 years 6 weeks ago

Really great article Lord Erman! It shows how truely epic the tournament can be from many different views.

I was a at a big disadvantage by not know Flippers deck. My deck rarely taps out any ways and once I played my giant solifuge in game two I wasn't planning to tap out again for the rest of the game. I had alot of backup to make sure the solifuge would go all the way. It was a really great play by flippers.

Registration starts every Sunday at 12:30 PM EST. Even after a full season the format is still wide open so come try it out. The full season 2 schedule can be found here: http://community.wizards.com/clanyawgmoth/go/thread/view/77017/24078365/...

  • Semi Pro - 5 Things That Keep Good Players From Being Great   15 years 6 weeks ago

If they don't reprint P9 the peasants will revolt. Enchantress isn't to bad money wise to build right now. ANT on the other hand is well a little costly lol. Never been a storm kinda guy so I don't have to worry about getting those LED's just yet.

  • Flavor of the Shake Turning Putrid and Trolls into Delicious!   15 years 6 weeks ago

I'd still think a good Reanimator player would have the upper hand. Duplicant can be countered as well. I'm not saying it an auto win for them or you, just not so sure it is favorable. Unless by favorable you mean 55%. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that point.

Death and Taxes does seem like it would be more favorable, although they can remove bridge tokens via Burge or even using jitte on their own dudes if necessary. Dredge always has weird Dread return targets. Some run terastodon, some run Iona, some run Angel of Despair.

I think you have Landstill confused for another deck (probably New Horizons). Most landstill lists I've seen don't run any creatures, usually they use Mishra's and Jace. You could be thinking of Baseruption maybe.

Have you thought of trying any other decks not running FOW? You've been testing against Blaze, so is running DnT an option for you?

  • Flavor of the Shake Turning Putrid and Trolls into Delicious!   15 years 6 weeks ago

lol i agree on deck editor, but reanimator has 2 options A. go for Iona naming black and be overrun by ichys and zombies or B. bring in archon and having it removed from game with duplicant, and still be stomped by zombies and ichys even if they bring in sphynx i can duplicant or make a 17/17 troll which has to be blocked letting in my zombies and ichys run through.

as of mirror matches i been against a couple of mirror matches but they go for the whole fetchland/bloodghast package in the couple of games i played against i noticed that it slows dredge down. DnT is a good match up depending on our draws i have been play testing with Blazelix who has been taking DnT to a lot of good tourny results and i have had some close match ups, I like to add in leyline to put a stop to benevelots and forge tender's ability while adding in some ancient grudges to blow up DnT's artifacts and ethersworns. Juton can slow me down some but if i have a decent field advantage i simply dont dredge eventually juton cant use his upkeep ability and dies out.

Landstill i think i played 2 landstill decks both very close i just try not to over dredge with landstill because meeting a bojuka bog with knight of reliquaries CIP ability is just horrible.

also i believe you have to really know the format well and the metagame to be decent, im still learning the format as im going along but i have picked up on some tricks here and there. If you know they are running AnT, therapy for mystical tutor t1 is good. goblins and DnT aether vial t1 is a good target followed be juton if you saw him in their hand. animator t1 entomb or exhume is good. little things like that help you play out the deck and sometimes win you the game
