I think perhaps it's the rarity or value of some of the cards I play that people have issues with, rather than the power of the decks themselves. My earlier builds of my oath decks never made it past round one before the tournament became swiss, yet somehow they were over powered. This angel deck isn't much different in my opinion. Certainly turn 2 iona out vs a mono coloured deck is game over. The reality is that play is pretty rare to happen. Unfortunately it's more likely to be a turn 3 or 4 angel that just gets path to exiled and leaves me totally defenseless vs a swarm of 2/2 guys. That's exactly what happened in round 2 when I lost 0-2.

When you convert these tier 1 tournament decks into a tribal format you're losing usually 10-15 cards to creature slots to conform to the tribal deck rules. In doing so you're always losing the ability for the deck to deal with trouble cards. When you look at my build, I have 3 cards to try and single handedly thwart other peoples offenses. If you take out my moat, and I don't have an insane hand, I lose. And that happened more than once in the tournament.

So with that in mind, although the deck my look very powerful on paper, it has gaping holes to exploit which the tournament brothers do not. The oath deck had an insanely large weakness in enchantment removal. Anyone that played some won. The renaimator deck is very week to both targeted removal and massive creature waves. If i had enough cash to play 4x baneslayer the creature wave problem would be lessened I suppose.

Anyway something to think about when trying to classify decks as overpowered.

great stuff I was just lookin at building a tribal pest deck actually kinda like the classic one an the one Winter Wolf ran with prot blackers instead of red.. pest was always a fav of mine I'm still working on it as BW multi an this gave me some ideas thx

"but he quit and no one else mentioned it all day. So in my opinion he was whining and in reality it's all good"

having played this deck first round I did mention it, but I'm not one to overly complain... this deck is one of the ones that sits on that overpowered line... turn 2 Iona is just as bad as Imp Reanimator and Legacy gobos and any other combo that's caused complaints... this is why people can't get a read on the power level when it's written off as o-k for this to be ran, but an outsider who brought the same thing would probably get a harsher response... now I'm not tryin to complain or anything, I like endless, but it just seems a bit much

an that Advisor deck is ridiculous lol I have to see if I have the cards to put that together and give it a try lol

and the one good thing about the gobo deck is that it isn't your typical gobos so thats nice

lookin forward to pauper, still if anyone wants to do some test games and I'm on lemme kno cuz I still cannot decide which to bring (tho clearly it'll have to be able to deal with Blastoderm lol)

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Everlasting Torment   15 years 10 weeks ago

For the first time Im going to say all goblins are banned. This does not count tribal instants and such. For one I am curious just to see how creative we can be and two I dont want to deal with the off chance someone makes an elf warrior and tries to pass it off as wariors

  • Terra Eternal - The first few weeks of Legacy   15 years 10 weeks ago

good results maybe an understatement lol I have to say when lookin through decks before Legacy came online I saw D&T and thought it was a joke, but you've made a showing that changed my mind on the matter lol

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Everlasting Torment   15 years 10 weeks ago

Just to clarify are (a) all Goblins banned (and I assume this means creatures, not tribal instants and such), or (b)running goblins as a tribe is banned?

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

Haste can be provided free of charge with careful preparation.

  • Scoop Phase - Polymorph   15 years 10 weeks ago

You recommend cutting Chalice alot. Is it really necessary if it goes out against many match ups? Don't get me wrong, I own 4 and love the card but it seems that if you are running it, you have it in there for a reason. Taking it out seems like a lazy decision.

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

At least in the casual room, Animate Dead, Exhume, and Reanimate all fail to cheat the Eldrazi into play. Hypergenesis, Eureka, Show and Tell, Elvish Piper, Polymorph, and alternate reality Braids all work though.

As for what is viable in eternal formats, I think it's just Oath of Druids, Show and Tell, and Hypergenesis. But I could be proven wrong. Oath is banned in Legacy anyway, and Oath players already have Iona + Progenitus, so yeah. Oath players do love to shuffle their graveyards into their libraries though, and the Eldrazi give them a way to do exactly that.

Legacy players already have the option of laying down Iona or Platinum Angel with Hypergenesis or Show and Tell, and apparently they do, but it's not top tier. In the casual room though that's gonna be a pain. Forget the 3 titans. The mere 8-10 mana commons and uncommons are going to do it. None of them have haste, though. So it's somewhat fair.

  • Freed from the Real #61 - Community Cup Claytor!!   15 years 10 weeks ago

Hmmm I only made one vote. I guess I didn't realize you could nominate multiple people.

  • Freed from the Real #61 - Community Cup Claytor!!   15 years 10 weeks ago

Two of the three people I voted for, are in the Community Team (one being Josh of course). Congrats Josh! And try to get one of those puremtgo t-shirts and make us proud.

Grats Josh, I was hoping AJ would be invited but I am glad you got in. I can tell you this...commander is something I know almost nothing about even having spent many hours building decks. It would be nice to see the entire list of invitees.

    Nevermind found it: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/other/042...

    Aj

Will be there in spirit, as he is going to be one of the guys that helps me the most in Commander

  • Freed from the Real #61 - Community Cup Claytor!!   15 years 10 weeks ago

I'm actually working on Commander decks right now, i'm gonna play a game or two with one of my buddies, who supplied me with a decklist just to get a feel for the format.

  • Freed from the Real #61 - Community Cup Claytor!!   15 years 10 weeks ago

Congrats Joshua, not only is our editor going but a state champion at that. There is some good playskils there.

Now then who are the other 7?

  • Freed from the Real #61 - Community Cup Claytor!!   15 years 10 weeks ago
    CCC

C'mon Josh, let's playtest us some Commander!

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

You might want this with that manticore deck....

Bazaar Trader, Mark of Mutiny, or Roil Elemental.

  • Terra Eternal - The first few weeks of Legacy   15 years 10 weeks ago

This article is a very nice overview of the online Legacy format. Two weeks is a good start for signs of a solid metagame. I also wish you could have gotten into more details about each deck.
As for myself, I have never played Legacy in paper and previously tried online Classic. I have been running my pet deck in events with good results.

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

Do I just have a dirty mind or is there something naughty in the Realms Uncharted picture? I think the lady's pose and her look are very suggestive, especially comparing with the more pensive mood of Gifts Ungiven. Also "Realms Uncharted", come on, THAT's innuendo...

  • Terra Eternal - The first few weeks of Legacy   15 years 10 weeks ago

A decent article. I would of liked to see more elaboration regarding weaknesses. Also a more detailed look at each deck would of helped as well. It did provide a nice overview of the meta so far. Due to scheduling conflicts I've only played in one DE, but I've played in several 2mans lately, messing around with Dream Halls and Dragon Stompy.

Since the Ad Nauseam bug was fixed I would assume we will start seeing more of that combo rise up!

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

I wish we had Oblivion Stone instead of this one. All is Dust is incredibly easy to cast on turn four or five and it blows everything instantly whereas O-Stone was a bit clumsy if you know what I mean (play, tap, add a fate counter, untap, do that again, untap, sac...). All is Dust isn't.

    It posted twice.

  • Rogue Play - My Rise of the Eldrazi, Part I   15 years 10 weeks ago

As far as All is Dust goes, I think you might be forgetting Oblivion Stone, and that card was arguably better than All is Dust.
