WotC simply admitted that this part of the 6th edition rules was a mistake so good on them. People screaming that removal has somehow became imba need to give some better examples than 'call to heel' got worse.

How about Sol Ring? Mana Vault? Do you have access to either of those? I'd also run a singleton Zuran Orb (which I should have run in my deck, but forgot). Trinisphere and Chalice of the Void are two options that will probably help out a lot in Vintage. Balance is another strong option if you have it.

Just remember that both Lotus Petal and Enlightened Tutor are restricted in Vintage, so you'd need to fill out those slots also.

Yeah very levelheaded guy even though he acts like a hyperactive junkie at times. Last year he was probably one of the first pros to say mythic rares were no big deal at all, wich they weren't.

  • Explorations #29 - Welcome to 1997   15 years 49 weeks ago

I love the deck. I think I can make it IRL for under $50 for a local vintage casual tournament. I only have 1 mox diamond, and 1 chrome mox. Do you have any suggestions for 2 other cards to fill the 4 mox diamond slot?

I'm not sure of the full history, but as of right now the only thing banned in Mirage block is Squandered Resources.. Anyone know which pieces were banned, if any were, in the past?

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

I enjoyed reading your take on these cards - I like seeing all the prespectives that I can.

My only comment would be something that took me a while to get hammered down when I did my first cycle like this - Your ranking/rating system. You might want to consider redoing it a bit so that you have some more wiggle room when it comes to the cards and don't end up throwing out a lot of 2s. - just a thought. Looking forward to the 2nd half.

  • Explorations #29 - Welcome to 1997   15 years 49 weeks ago

im pretty sure parts of it were banned in block

one the clearest explanation i rade about this combo. Your article is a "bomb in the format" ;)

Just a little comment about your first match : i cannot understand your opponent .... i see no reasons to be angry about playing aginst this deck : no "classic bomb" (read : fow, hard discard ...) , no "broken cards", no "uncounterable situations" ... pretty casual ! Plus it is an excellent way to learn a "new" combo and to gain experience for any player. Really, i cannot understand ...

The audio should be fixed to not overlap. I had it replaced with a version without the added pre/post audio so it's just the interview. That should fix the delay issues that have been noticed this far.

Thank you for sticking with it, learning from constructive criticism, and coming right back with a well written and informative article.
Some points that occur to me, 22 land maindeck is low for a control deck, a couple of panoramas or cycling lands might be useful additions. Maybe you're not having consistency issues, but I feel control decks really need more than 24 mana sources.
How does it fare versus heavy disruption, discard or countermagic? Capsize, Vithian stinger and Lava Dart are some other options to try if you need them.

Thanks for the feedback, I will definitely write more articles like this in the future.

have you tried cascade into the 2 card combo? it works deliciously

I played Magic back then, but I didn't have access to the Internet. I did have access at school, but it actually never occurred to me that Magic info could be found on the Internet. (That young, anyway.)

I'm shocked that Sands of Time was ever played seriously. I mean, I'm not shocked because the combo isn't awesome. I'm more shocked that the combo was this cool and I've never seen it nor heard a reference to it. And isn't this the same set/block that gave us ProsBloom? What a beautiful set. Haha.

Oh man. Impulse at common. And the original CitP creatures. It really was an awesome set.

  • Freed from the Real #18.5: Optimus Worth Assembles!   15 years 49 weeks ago

    Found it. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1166723

My interpretation: "We noticed that no one cares about classic events. They have to compete with the most recent standard sets, and after a week they pretty much stop firing. Since we hate selling product for events that aren't firing we've decided to change our policy.

From now on classic sets will launch for only two weeks. Those two weeks will be awesome like normal, with special events and everything, but then that classic set will be gone forever.

Obviously if this were the whole story then we'd be creating a massive shortage of the classic sets. But fear not, for we plan on bringing the classic sets back every once in a while. We'll also invent new opportunities to acquire old packs."

Shortly after that announcement followed the invention of nix product limited events. And for the 7th anniversary they've just announced MED/MED/MED2 nix-product drafts for the general public! So much for FoW being out-of-print? So even though Mox Diamond is $44 now, we'll never see the true end of Stronghold, either. You can always draft more if you don't like the singles prices. (Though granted, not on demand.)

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to express their opinion on cards; gaining a different perspective is important in anything, even drafting on MTGO.

I agree with some of the things and disagree with some. I have found that ina void, ardent plea should be good but in practice it's really not-who knows why, it just isn't and I don't want to waste my brain power trying to figure it out. Then again...I favor jund aggro in this particular arena...

I think the same applies for fight to the death---I think the problem with cards such as these is that they are far to narrow in scope and lack the versitility or raw power that makes cards good in limited. For me, the best cards are versitile, efficient and don't require alot to make them better.

I will give you an example: you give ethercaste knight a lower rating than fight to the death (avoiding arguments along the lines of color-versus-color matchups and other metagame considerations) I think ethercaste knight is better because it is 1)a solid two drop 2)has laste game because of the exalted and a big butt to keep it around 3)can compliment-eventhough it can be a downside-esper builds because of it being an artifact. When this is contrasted to fight to the death I think you see that versitility is what makes fight to the death bad, it is highly contingent.

Aside from that, a point to all people who do card evals-most of us who are reading here, even if we aren't "good" (and I am probably not "good" by comparison) know the basics---i'd love to hear some of your personal insights, stories etc maybe something we can take away aside from, you know, "5/5 fliers with exalted and lifelink are bombs" I dunno, maybe focusing your efforts into an article on how you go about drafting your controllish deck would be nice! And of note, people, if you don't have anything nice to say or constructive just don't say anything.

    Cheers-will read the next article.

    "Deadshot Minotaur

Info: Actually a surprisingly good creature considering the prevalence of flying dudes. Might cost a bit much, but I'll pay five mana for a kill spell and a 3/ 4 any day. Hell, I pay five mana for Bituminous Blast, that MIGHT get me a creature this big and kill a dude. And that doesn't cycle.

    Verdict: 2.5"

So he's good because there are flyers. And you'll pay five mana for a 3/4 that kills a flyer on its way in. Then you compare it to Bituminous Blast which creates much more than what you say. First, BBlast is an instant spell. Second, you can cascade into ANOTHER cascade spell. Oh, and thanks for pointing out that it cycles, I couldn't tell by reading the card.

I'd much rather tell you that stuff people don't know about the card. Like perhaps how it's really good (and not because of the obvious stuff that everyone can read on the card which you point out to us as if we're illiterate). I would tell you that he's good because for R/G decks we used to have more Mosstodon and Beacon Behemoths, but now those guys are generally too slow in ACR format - and that this guy fills the niche amazingly because he won't clog your hands like the previous two guys. Also, with ACR, Naya has less removal that it can pick up from previous ACC or AAA drafts and that he's needed to fill the role of having more Resounding Thunder, Branching Bolt, etc.

    "Cerodon Yearling

Info: I think I have an unnatural love for this dude, but he's so efficient I can't help it."

Oh really? He's efficient? 2/2 Haste + Vigilance for 2 mana - thanks, Captain Obvious.

"If you're in his colors, use him, I doubt you'll be disappointed, especially if you're of the aggro variety deck, as he lets you get in there for damage the turn he drops and still sticks back to block.
    Verdict: 2.5"

Oh thanks, I didn't understand what Haste and Vigilance met, but thanks for your clarification. Your descriptions help very little. And in fact, you rate him way too high. While he's very efficiently costed mana-wise, it's not very good because unless your mana fixing is amazing, he won't be coming down on the second turn very often. Most often, Naya decks are GR splash W or WG splash R, rarely will you have a good viable RW splash G type of Naya deck. That being said, he's still okay on the third turn or fourth turn, but by then you will most likely be wanting to cast 3cc or 4cc dudes. Of course, if your mana is evenly spread between WGR, then go for it, this guy would be good. And even then, if you are evenly split WGR deck, you're more likely to be a WGR big men type of deck and not an aggro GWR even split deck because mana issues will slow you down. Aside from the WGR-evenly split color Naya decks, I would not splash him in the aforementioned GW-r or RG-w decks unless you were really needing some more creatures (where you want at least 14-15 dudes in those aggressive Naya decks).

And these are just two card reviews of yours that I picked at random.

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

No, if I disagree with you next time I'll post the same thing. I'm going to make my opinion known, especially when it's in direct contrast to the article. That argument is as dumb as saying "if you don't agree with america's policies you should leave"

If you wanted to post your personal preferences to bad cards, you should've written that so people can stop taking you seriously. Saying "I like X card so it's better than Y card" for a rating system that's meant to convey a sense of objective value is ridiculous.

If you like viashino skeleton over viashino slaughtermaster, you are wrong. Put another way, you are bad and you should not be giving out advice. Each card has its advantages, obviously, but 1 wins more games than the other. Some cards are better in a few archetypes, but in your rating system you need to discount these rare cases or make them apparent in the article itself. Honestly, I think your lack of experience with the format shows when you said you've never taken colossal might.

Thank you for the transcript because you two were talking on top of each other. Why was that?

Good news about Urza's and the UI, bad news about leagues.

I thought that the reason Stronghold went "no packs, just events" was because they intended to make it practically eternal. Previously they'd run events for whatever packs were in the store and the events would end as soon as the set went OOP. After that, they might throw the occasional invite-only draft of an OOP set, but a few drafts has no effect on the economy. Now they can run "no pax TE/ST/EX" whenever they feel like it. They'll never sell the packs ever again, but we'll be cracking them frequently for years. I mean, TE/ST/EX events will certainly end someday, but they'll come back, and they won't be invite-only when they do. Let me try to find a source for this.

Whoever wrote the last post in regards to this article acknowledges that you are a complete FNM loser who won't be succeeding in life due to your cruel ways. I'm sure your weak in a lot more areas than just limited .... please don't hide behind a screen name.

    hammy,
You still need to specify if Meddling Mage is the pR2 version, the ARB version or a composite value of both.
    (Meddling Mage -1.98 -14.29% 11.88 13.86)

And I think you should do that with any card that has multiple versions.

    this article is weak.

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

    Hello,

Daru Stinger did have removal attached to it, although it was mostly a huge body for a casting cost of 4. The removal yes somewhat used yet when it's 4/4 or 5/5 it's removal by itself.

The strategy you use with Bant Sureblade and exalted is easily defeated and is a very weak strategy to succeed at this game. You have to try other options and leave yourself open to other possibilities to succeed and what fits your play style.

There is a dramatic difference between Soul's Fire and Colossal Might .... as you need to target usually the creature that might be dying rather than a creature that isn't in combat to kill a creature that is in combat. These 2 differences are quite far apart and shouldn't be compared in my views.

    Awaiting your 2nd article!

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

Ardent plea: My opinion of it changed greatly last night when it kept hitting naturalize and such. Good in the right deck xD

Arsenal thresher: I'm actually not sure why i rted this poorly. I've just personally never had it be useful because as I've said before it's extremely difficult to get a critical mass of artifacts.

And didn't Daru stinger have removal attached...?

Bant Sureblade: Meh. I usually play it with an excessive ammount of exalted. And I always play by the "Play like they don't have it rule".

Colossal Might: I've actually never taken this card, but It's killed me enough times when I didn't have the removal. Soul's Fire has the same problem but people still play it...

Deathbringer: I actually really am a huge proponent of this card. MY friends kinda think I'm stupid about it. Just in reality, he IS a 6 mana 3/3 who is reliant upon something else dying.

Filigree Angel: MY problem with it is that many other creatures are more powerful in a void, and that somedecks simply can have you dead before you're even capable of playing a Filigree angel. I'll work on making my arguments better.

Thank you, though. I'm going to be much more careful with the second half, and am currently in the process of rewriting it.

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

I said don't just trash me. Insinuating that I have no experience with the format is slightly insulting. Because our playstyles are different and we value other cards more then others does NOT make me wrong. It makes me different. If we all had the same opinion of every card, no one would need to do this. It's not all black and white.

For instance, lets go back to stormblade vs. Grimblade. A defensive controlling player with a liking for removal and a slow deck that focuses on bombs, would definitely want a creature that can help stall out the game and deal with their opponents stronger creatures. I play this style of deck frequently, and I must say it is quite an effective strategy. Now a UW aggro deck on the other hand, obviously would want the 3/2 flier. But I have more affinity for the defense then the Aggressive, thus my natural desire for a better defensive creature shows. It doesn't make me valuing the grimblade higher wrong, just different. And that's why I'm here. To present my unique point of view. And if mine is different from your, so what? Magic is a modular game and not every draft deck is the same. IF I value grimblade more then stormblade it's only because I have a natural affinity for that decktype.

I'll try my best to be more objective with the rest of them. And if you disagree next time, you can just stop reading and go away, no ones making you read my articles.

  • Ye Olde Drafting Shoppe- Introductions   15 years 49 weeks ago

Welcome to PureMTGO and if you have read many of my other comments I tend to attempt to help although it may seem like I am quite rude etc with no intentions of this at all. The disagreements with your values are the following:

Ardent Plea: Not even close to what you rate it at, as it isn't a creature as well as it can totally miss on
    cascade.

Arsenal Thresher: This is the new Daru Stinger of limited and is usually a Hill Giant or even bigger which this format doesn't easily deal with. Regardless of the deck as you stated this shouldn't be hard to grow and in the right players hand can easily win games.

Bant Sureblade: You do realize you are asking for 2 for 1's .... I sense that you like getting owned by removal running into your own demise!

Colossal Might: Do realize once again this format is removal heavy and clearly this being said you should take these with ease. WRONG!

Deathbringer Thoctar: I forgot Goblin Sharpshooter was bad ....

Filigree Angel: Your explanation has to be much better as a 4/4 flyer for 7 is bad? Which gains you 3 life +?

Majority of your comments or explanations are very weak and if this article is based on your playing
in consecutive 4-3-2-2 drafts I would suggest playing in a 8-4 and being owned by such cards you don't
    rate highly.

Nice try, and I will gladly comment on your next article!
