I missed the Shadowmoor prerelease.  I was pretty dissapointed about that, but things happen, and sometimes traveling forty miles to the venue may not be in your best interest.  Sometimes gas prices are very high and you can not afford it.  Other times you lifted your son up wrong and pulled a muscle in your back.  Gas prices really did not affect me this time around, but there was no way I could drive to Louisville, sit around all day and drive home with out being in some sort of mind numbing pain.

I guess you could say that these reviews have been my prerelease.  I feel shafted, because I do not have a Prerelease card, but I'll get over it.  (Speaking of, I know MTGO gets the Avatars, but why can we not get the prerelease card as well?  I like Alternate Art stuff.)

So Shadowmoor is on the horizon, and it may be on MTGO before the NBA playoffs end!  I'm looking forward to this set, as I have really grown bored of the current Standard and Block formats.  (I've said that before.) I need something to shake up my decks, and I hope that Shadowmoor can deliver it!

Let's move on the review, I'm going to use the same system that jamuraa used for his red review, but here is a refresher!

Stars Constructed Limited PDC
Get Four. Now. Grab as many as you can get your hands on. Build your deck around it.
Will be played in 2-3 decks. Decent second or third pick. Decent for a common.
You could see this card in the finals, but I wouldn't bet on it. If it tables, Red is open. Step 1: Build around 3-star card.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: PDC Tourney win.
Fringe card, probably not viable. Not that great, but playable. The only reason you're even considering this card is because it's PDC.
If someone pays you for it, take the tix and run. Won't make your 40 cards. Are there any other cards you could put in? Are you sure you have enough land?
Burn them for winter heat. Take as long as there isn't a juicy basic land. You'll only have these because it's easier to buy full sets.

That seems simply enough right?  I need to add a disclaimer.  I'm going to be wrong.  Some people will disagree with my rating of a card, and I am okay with that.  Getting set reviews wrong is sorta like the sun rising and setting, it's just going to happen!

Crabapple Cohort
- 4G
Creature - Treefolk Warrior (Common)
Crabapple Cohort gets +1/+1 as long as you control another green creature.
4/4

I see this guy, and I think of decks for him to go in.  There is no real Treefolk Warrior deck, and the Shaman deck just has better guys to play.  At five mana, I have grown to expect more bang for the cost than a simple five powered man.  In limited he is going to be a very good creature to have along the top of the curve provided that green is not a splash color.  I also happen to think there are better options in PDC.

Constructed
Limited
PDC

Devoted Druid - 1G
Creature - Elf Druid (Common)
{T}: Add {G} to your mana pool.
Put a -1/-1 counter on Devoted Druid: Untap Devoted Druid.
0/2

I really like this guy.  I see him as a smaller Wall of Roots who only gets to remove one counter, but gets to be a 0/1 mana producer for the rest of the game.  He gives you a small boost in your mana, and who does not love that?  This block has a very few mana accelerants, so this guy could see play there, but there are just better cards in Standard.  PDC still has Llanowar Elves, Boreal Druid and Fertile Ground so I can not see this guy making an impact there either.

Dramatic Entrance - 3GG
Instant (Rare)
You may put a green creature card from your hand into play.
Some things aren't worth waiting for.
Illus. Mike Dringenberg
#111/301

TA DA!  Everytime I think of this card I get an image of the Dramatic Woodchuck or whatever small woodland critter it is in the popular internet meme.  This is one of those cards that I think you can just build around.  The more expensive Flash does not actually kill the guy, but it also gives you the "draw back" of having to put a green Creature into play.  I like the idea of casting a turn one mana dork, then a second turn mana dork and casting this on my opponents end step to bring out a Verdant Force.  Of course Shriekmaw ends that guy pretty soon, but I can see a lot of potential in this card for constructed play.  In limited I can see this being a potential bomb as well.  You are only going to play it if you have solid green men, and it's only going to be good for the surprise blocker that it provides, but other than that it is pretty bad.  (I guess I could have said this card is good if you have good green.)

Drove of Elves - 3G
Creature - Elf (Uncommon)
Drove of Elves's power and toughness are each equal to the number of green permanents you control.
Drove of Elves can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.
"The light of beauty protects our journeys through darkness."

Illus. Larry Mcdougal
#112/301

I can see this guy making an impact in the Mono Green Elf builds if they stick around.  I hate playing with Coat of Arms because it is just fragile, however, coat wins the game when it is cast, and you have a full board.  This guy does not do that.  While this guy does not effect your elves, he does get a bonus from them.  It is also untargetable, so Shriekmaw is not going to kill it, It's not going to get burned out, or hit with any non mass removal spell.  It is more than likely a fringe card.

Farhaven Elf - 2G
Creature - Elf Druid (Common)
When Farhaven Elf comes into play, you may search your library for a basic land card and put that card into play tapped. If you do, shuffle your library.
1/1

This card reminds me a lot of Civic Wayfinder.  You have to ask yourself, is it better to have the land in play and a 1/1 or the land in your hand and a 2/2?  More often than not, the wayfinder is going to win out, he has synergy with the Warrior deck.  However, if there is going to be a Gilt-Leaf Archdruid deck (and there can be, as the amount of Druids went up with this set.) than this elf will fit in perfectly!

PDC

Flourishing Defenses - 4G
Enchantment (Uncommon)
Whenever a -1/-1 counter is placed on a creature, you may put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play.
#114/301

I hate it.  If I am casting an enchantment for five mana, it better win me the game, not reward me with a terrible creature whenever a counter gets put on another guy (Which more than likely will kill that guy anyway).  This is not Prowess of the Fair.  It's not even close.

PDC

Foxfire Oak - 5G
Creature - Treefolk Shaman (Common)
{rg}{rg}{rg}: Foxfire Oak gets +3/+0 until end of turn.
3/6

This is another card that I have nothing but ill will for.  It does not play nice with Doran.  It costs six, and it does not have any kind or trample or evasion ability.  This is pretty boring.

Constructed

PDC

Gleeful Sabotage - 1G
Sorcery (Common)
Destroy target artifact or enchantment.
Conspire
#116/301

I like to think that there is a place for artifact and enchantment destruction in any constructed format.  In block, this is not really better than Spring Cleaning (Which can potentially be a blow.) However, it is another way to deal with Bitterblossom so I will accept it.  I do not give it a better ranking in PDC because there are better cards.  The limited rating is three as well, because there seems to be a ton of playable enchantments in the format.

Constructed

PDC

Gloomwidow - 2G
Creature - Spider (Uncommon)
Reach
Gloomwidow can't block creatures without flying.
3/3

I am really excited about this guy.  He's going to block every faerie and live outside of Oona, Mistbind Clique and (Vendillion Clique).  (And maybe another Fae that I am forgetting.)  He's also going to kill those Fae if they get into the red zone.  I may also have a little Jon Becker in me, as I happen to love the Spider creature.

Gloomwidow's Feast - 3G

Each night, gloomwidows cull fresh prey for their ravenous hatchlings.
Illus. Thomas M. Baxa
#118/301

Solid instant removal for troublesome creatures in limited.  Sideboard filler for constructed, and a solid spell in PDC.  I liken this card to Violet Pall, except there is not color drawback.  You more often than not will get a spider to block any other flyers as well!

PDC

Howl of the Night Pack - 6G
Sorcery (Uncommon)
Put a 2/2 green Wolf creature token into play for each Forest you control.
#119/301

I am not sure how I feel about the mono colored decks matter spells.  Outside of Corrupt are any of them really playable?  Worst case you get seven 2/2 men, which is not terrible.  I'm not sold on this being a good card in constructed, but in limited, it is weak because you're more then likely not mono green.  This card, I fear just does not do enough for it's mana cost.

Hungry Spriggan - 2G

If a spriggan's eyes are larger than its stomach, it has ways to remedy the situation.
1/1
Illus. Drew Tucker
#120/301

I love this guy.  He is a 4/4 attacker, and he is in a tribe that wants to go sideways.  If there is a green red goblin warrior deck, he will fit in fine.  Again as with Dramatic Enterance, I think this is a card that I just have a man crush on, and will end up being worthless!

Juvenile Gloomwidow - GG
Creature - Spider (Common)
Reach
Wither
1/3
Illus. Thomas M. Baxa
#121/301

Again, I like spiders.  This guy has wither, so he can help out against pesky regenerating creatures as well.  Of course against the matchup he shines in there are not many regenerating creatures to speak of, as Fae really do not have that ability much!  I wonder why the baby has wither but the adult does not.  Maybe it is just a part of growing up.

Mana Reflection - 4GG
Enchantment (Rare)
If you tap a permanent for mana, it produces twice as much of that mana instead.
#122/301

I am rating this more on potential than anything else.  Several cards like this have seen large amounts of constructed play.  However, Wake was good because it also pumped up your Decree of Justice tokens.  Heartbeat was good because it allowed you to win on turn four with a good draw!  This one may not be as easily broken since we are missing an Early Harvest type effect, but anytime that you get to cheat on mana, that has to be watched.

Mossbridge Troll - 5GG
Creature - Troll (Rare)

Tap any number of untapped creatures you control other than Mossbridge Troll with total power 10 or greater: Mossbridge Troll gets +20/+20 until end of turn.
5/5
Illus. Jeremy Jarvis
#123/301

This is a 5/5 that does not die.  If you are activating his ability you are not only winning, but more than likely winning "more."  He does not play nice with Wither creatures though.  I mean as a state based effect a creature with zero toughness is put into the graveyard, so he is not going to help much there.

Do not want!  I can not really say anything good about this guy.  He ties up your mana, which messes up with your curve, which is never a good thing.

Presence of Gond - 2G
Enchantment - Aura (Common)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature has "{T}: Put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play."
#125/301

I like this more for limited and PDC because it makes that guy one half of an Imperious Perfect.  This is a much more fragile Squirrel Nest and there is not a Glare of Subdual or Opposition in the format to really take advantage of it with, but it does provide a stream of blockers.

Prismatic Omen - 1G
Enchantment (Rare)

#126/301

I was high on Joiner Adept when it was in Standard, so I am going to be high on the version of that card that is not a glass jaw in combat.  I like the options that this card can give you.  Do you run it and a shifty mana base in order to play as many powerful cards as you can?  Do you just run it, and a tutor to still allow you to play powerful stuff?  I think this opens a lot of deck design space.

It's a Caltrops for flying guys.  I can not really say much else.  No you're not going to take damage from that flyer unless it has a toughness greater than four.  Honestly it looks to me that they tried really hard to hurt Fae in this set.

I think this may be the best mono green card in the set.  If this creature goes unchecked the game is going to be over quickly.

Tower Above can be played by any color, which is pretty okay.  It can only be played at sorcery speed, which is not okay.  It gets trample, wither and provoke which is all okay.  It is not going to see constructed play, but I can see this getting play in limited as a way to deal damage faster.

Illus. Thomas M. Baxa
#134/301

This guy is pretty huge.  Six mana is a discount cost for the power and toughness that it has.  Of course it's draw back makes him smaller with each attack step until he is either dead or finally getting in the opponent's personal space.  At that point he becomes giant again.  It does not seem terrible.

Illus. Adam Rex

Eight mana for a 6/6 trampling man that also kills a non creature when it comes into play.   It also has persist, which allows it to come back for a second go around.  It's a bit too expensive, but for what it does, I can understand the cost.

This wraps up my review of the green cards in Shadowmoor.  Since the set is so heavy on the hybrids, I feel there are not many exciting mono colored spells, and I think that shows in my review.  (I'm wrong on everything I know!) Thanks for reading the 1000th article on puremtgo.com, and join us next week as runeliger finishes up the rest of the set!

Solid article, but like I have said on another preview, Wisps deserves more than one star in limited, 3 or 4 would be about right, as the hybrid aura cycle is just really overpowering, having a cantrip to shut it off for one mana is something that can't be overlooked.  Also it is good for dealing with Liege bonuses or those annoying creatures that can't be blocked by a certain colour (for me it was the red/green critter that couldn't be blocked by blue)

In draft & sealed, Flourishing Defense is a bomb.  I watched one match, one player had Incremental Demise (normally a blow-out),  Grim Poppet (the reverse Triskellion) and Grief Tyrant (a 4/4 that deals -4/-4 when it leaves play) - and could not play them.  The opponent had Florusihing Defense in play - and if he played any of these cards, the opponent would get 4-6 elves.

I am looking forward to drafting a deck with lots of Wither creatures and Defense....

These cards have been doing bad things in limited on Beta.  Now it could just be that its Shadowmoor only, but I suspect that these two cards will have more impact in limited than you rated them.  Spriggans are cheap cast and easy to target, but they will want to target it (which saves your later cast fatties) and the Nurturer makes for early beats when you really need to race.  I would have rated them both 3 stars in limited.

For limited Crabapple Cohort is a nice top-of-the-curve, as has been mentioned.  at least a 3 star.  Hungry Spriggan is drafted into aggro decks where he will be turned sideways.  Sure, they might kill him, but they might do that to anyone else.  He's a 4/4 trampler.  4 stars for limited.  Also, the Devoted Druid is a key part of many of the G/x (usually Red) mana-ramp decks that get drafted.  They aren't always the best deck, but they fit in a 7/6 or two, and a bunch of other over-costed fatties.

I didn't know that they triggered the Defenses until a game on beta when a poppet came into play with -1/-1's and I got tokens.  Then it dawned on me that it should work like that (I boarded it in in Game 3 and it won me the game against his deck).  That makes it better, but it's still needs to be built around/right circumstances though.

Whenever a -1/-1 counter is placed on a creature, you may put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play.

So if your Scarecrow or Leech Bonder comes into play with 2 -1/-1 counters, you get 2 elves.  Wins the game if you build around.  Also, if they have Scarecrows too... gravy.

I can see Woodfall Primus making a Dramatic Entrance in a moderately good casual deck.  Throw in the devoted druid that gives you 5 mana on turn 3, and you have a pretty decent little combo.
