Hosts Sebastian Park and Erik Friborg are here for this edition of Freed from the Real.
The title was taken from the many suggestions in the last podcast. Thanks to everyone who submitted their suggestion and a special thanks to Tarmotog for coming up with the title suggestion first.
MTGO News
The figures for the tournament events are in. Compliments to Algona who compiles this information. Here are some of the numbers that were posted.
Tournament Events fired, as checked between the two days posted:
This is a huge increase over the past, when events wouldn't fire near this frequency. Most of this is fueled by the 2-man queues, which fire as regularly as ever. With the elimination of the 8 man queues, and the raising of the cost of entry of the 4-man queues to 6 tickets (and the subsequent prize increase), there's no doubt people are turning to 2-man queues to satisfy their competitive urges.
There's also an increase in the sealed prize payouts. This is probably a result of the increased cost of entry, which now is 6 booster packs, eliminating the necessity of the tournament pack.
In the Conflux Beta testing, the two big items that came up are the "suggest land" feature, which fills your sealed pool with lands at the ratio of mana cost of your deck and the return of auto-matching, which allows one to automatically be paired up with another person playing the same format! Lastly, the Beta test is moving along quickly by all accounts and everything seems to be on pace for the February 23rd deadline.
MTGO Events
The Prismatic weekend event didn't have quite the enthuisasm that the 132 player Pauper event did. The Conflux lull (this period between Conflux entering legality in paper and Conflux being released on Magic Online) lowered the Extended Weekend Event tournament to 48 people (which is a mere 36% the turnout for Pauper). Despite Wizards best effort, paper formats like Standard and Extended always experience this reduced tournament and there's really nothing that can be done other than shorten the period between the paper pre-release and the Magic Online release events.
Upcoming events include the Alara Nix Tix Championships on the 22nd of Feb. You can qualify for this by entering one of the various Nix Tix Sealed events (an attempt by WotC to get the Touranment Packs out of the system before they become useless). Also coming up is the Standard w/ Vanguard tournament on the 23rd.
MTGO Prices
Force of Wills rising to 70+ dollars? Dual lands at record levels? All the while, Pauper quickly continues its budget means. Pete Jahn's article and Dangerlinto's article tell the story well. Will the absurd prices scare away people from Classic? We don't know yet, but the risk is definitely there!
The Pauper scene is continuing to thrive and alter the price of just about everything. With commons priced as rares, 2-man queues firing non-stop, and people catching the Pauper bug, it's not hard to see why Pauper is quickly establishing itself as a powerhouse among formats.
PureMTGO News
We're working on getting everything worked out! Look for the RSS Feed for the podcast soon! We'd like to welcome all the new writers to the PureMTGO fold and wish them luck on their future ventures.
Great work guys. This is much improved from the first week when there were a lot of awkward pauses. Those are mostly gone now, and it's easy to focus on the content of your banter, which is great. Sebastian, I would recommend asking Erik for the make and model of his microphone and buying one yourself. It sounds much better, and if you used the same mic, it would sound more like you guys were having a conversation in the same room. Bravo.
You really got my attention when you started talking about the Prices of FOW, and classic cards in general. I am a classic player, so talking about this really grabbed me. I really like your convictions on the matter, and am looking forward to future listens with that same attitude.
Awesome job guys, much improved from your first time out. I can't wait to see where this goes in the future. One note is that contrary to popular belief, $70 times 4 is not $210 =)
Also for some reason I can't comment on this article normally? I had to reply to another commment?
On the other hand, that's approximately 3 1/2 more pauper decks you can buy :P
As for commenting on this article, Jamuraa was amazing enough to set up a special way for me to podcast on PureMTGO. I'll let him know about this commenting issue and I'm sure it'll be resolved in a jiffy.
For sure. I enjoyed this one alot. For sure. (I kid, I kid.)
Seriously though that hour passed by fast. I'm surprised I was interested in all that stuff. Yeah, I play Magic, but this a whole hour of Magic talk. Now I'm looking forward to the next one. (I listened to the whole hour twice!)
if you talk about prices and prizes and such, can you be specific? you keep saying that the prize is bigger or smaller or this or that but you don't state amounts. that was so annoying that i stopped listening to the mp3 and decided to write this reply. how big are 4 man q prizes now? how many packs? what about 2 man q's?
In contrast to lossless audio files, the MP3 format compresses the superfluous information in an audio file, requiring less storage space and facilitating io games network distribution.

70 * 4 = 280! My apologies.
