Free magic events... and yet people still complain about it? Magic players really are never happy. Hosts Erik and Sebastian discuss the latest happenings in both the online and paper Magic worlds!
MTGO News
Spoiler Alert! We're talking spoilers here. If you want to skip the spoilers, jump to 7:10 into the show!
In other news, the Classic release events will now have a much sooner offsale date. Instead of having longer periods of release where product is constantly on sale, after the two week release event time, everything will be taken off the stores. That said, the drafts will continue usin gthe nix pack method (where you can play with only tickets). The packs will reappear the next time a portion of the set is released (so Stronghold and Tempest would reappar with Prophecy). (Editor's Note: The podcast says it is Prophecy, but the third set in Tempest block is actually Exodus. We're not getting Prophecy for a long time!)
In time for the Magic Online Championship Series, Extended, Standard, Classic, and Block will be receiving their own 8-man queues so that you can qualify for season 1.
The Weekly Nix Tix Draft rotation schedule was announced and you can find exactly what packs can be used to draft here.
MTGO Events
Wednesday, April 1, 2009 signifies the start of the first season of the Magic Online Championship Series. Go out there and win PEs!
Before the MOCS Season 1 starts there are a couple of events you will want to attend. As part of the Customer Appreciation Week event schedule, there are Free Standard events (just bring your deck and play for prizes) on Monday and Free Alara Block Sealed on Tuesday (Just bring yourself!). Events open an hour before the start, so get ready to camp out to join!
Pauper fired with a 100+ turnout for the second consecutive time (that's 2 for 2) with 107 people.
This week's tournament qualifier:
RGD III (Ravnica Guildpact Dissension) sealed qualifier!
This week's Weekend PEs:
Saturday April 4 2009 - TPF I Championships
Sunday April 5 2009 - Alara Block Constructed
PRE (Player Run Event) of the Week:
99Tix Madness (Pre-April 5th): You can find more information by clicking here.
MTGO Prices
Dual lands are dropping as a direct result of the ME/ME2 championships this past weekend. As Master's Edition 2 is set to go offsale soon, don't expect these prices to stay low. The high classic prices in general seem to be warping the metagame as people have begun playing ANT ((Ad Nauseum) Tendrils), a deck that is fundamentally less resilient and worse than the Necropotence deck due to its inability to run Force of Will. Could this be the price disparity pushing this deck?
Extended card prices have gone the same way as Extended events and have begun to plummet in value. With the PTQ season in its final stretch, Extended is ready to enter its hibernation until the next Extended season comes rolling around.
Talking Points
Talking points is a new segment of the PureMTGO podcast. It's also the most flexible segment, as what's discussed changes every week! This week the topic is Multiplayer. Multiplayer experienced a huge downsizing since the switch over to version 3. There are tons of flaws and no real indication that anything will be fixed anytime soon. People even wonder if anyone cares. What's the solution? The Multi-player community should take after the Classic and Pauper community to push their formats into the limelight.

Prophecy/Exodus, tomato/tomahto... It's all old sets with crazy cards! :D
so i tried and tried to get my CAW freebie yesterday, only to be met with 1000 other people on the east coast and a dozen error messages taunting me and not allowing me to join in. thanks a lot wotc for customer apprication for the f'ed lag over the last month only to be spit on for what they call "apprication" when i get errored out of free product. tip of my hat to you aholes!
The CAW events were quite painful to watch. I tried to get into one as well but failed miserably, so I share your frustrations. :(
I'm looking forward to the textless terrors though.
Free events are just a lottery - obviously WOTC can't give all of their customers free product, so they chose to give a few lucky ones something. I don't know what's so frustrating about that - it's not like you lost anything that was rightfully yours...
Basically, the whole thing is just like the MacDonalds promotion where they give about every third customer a free small soft drink (do they do that in the US?) - nobody would scream 'aholes' to the counter personell because he didn't get the free drink and the guy on the next table did.
Granted, the way they did it was probably not good - it would have been better if they had just given away random invitations instead of making it first come first served, but the outcome is the same. And that there were client errors is unfortunate, but really doesn't change anything - if you can't join the event because of the bug it really is not more unfortunate than not being able to join because you clicked half a second too late ... it's just all about luck.
Sorry, but in all honestly, I can't quite get what the fuzz is all about ...
free drink equals 89 cents, six packs of product (of which is never discounted) 25 bucks.
math anyone?
Ok, 6 packs >> free drink, but how does that relate to anything? Why does that make it OK to b**ch around because somebody got something for free and you (presumably) didn't?
I thought Pro Tour Honolulu was Block Constructed/Draft format?
You're right, there's one big event that uses Ala Block Constructed. Unfortunately (for paper players) there's no Qualifiers that use the format so there's really not going to be a lot of constant discussion of the format except what happens online.
For those that are qualified and want to practice though, MTGO is going to be the best place! :D
Very true, it's almost as popular as standard in the Tournament Practice room at times!
Probably because it's a lot of fun and you don't need to buy Wrath, Figure of Destiny and Reflecting pool. :p
But you do still have to have the Ajanis and Elspeths which seem to be in every deck left and right, with a hint of Sarkhan Vol here and there.
i treid to get into EVERY one of the free sealed events, so i was up for 32 hours strait so i wouldnt miss my chance to click in, didnt make it into a single one and saw MENY of the same people in ALL 4, WOTC realy screwed this one up, can they actualy do ANYTHING rite?
same sunject pritymuch is the lack of careing from them for us multi players. same lame bugs and seat aragment that still dont work a year after 3.0 release. im starting to get realy frustraited with a company who just cant make the best game ever work properly online.
Randel Flag
Is there a plan to publish these podcasts through iTunes? I don't mind the manual process, but it would be nice.
