News:
Thankfully there have been a couple corrections made to tribal errata from last week: Umezawa's Jitte and Extinction will still be banned for Legacy Tribal... which just makes good sense all around.

Also, the entire Scars of Mirrodin set was spoiled on the main wizards site via the visual spoiler on the Wednesday before the prerelease - a first for that early of a time frame.

Tribal impacts of the set: New creature type!  Also... green artificers and horrors.  Green gets a taste of horrors from time to time but it's strange to seem just plopped right in here. Myr tribal has also been pushed very hard and elves no longer need to waste a slot on Overrun, thanks to their newest lord type dude-guy.

Prices:
Extended chase cards like Bitterblossom 14.50, Mutavault 12.50, Figure of Destiny 17.50, which would indicate that if you're looking ahead at Extended later, now might be a good time to chase down some staple cards before they re-surge.

Nissa and Garruk have been getting a bit more attention with the new elf lord dude in Scars.  Yes, that's pretty much his name at this point.. Elf Lord Dude.

Whatcha been playin?:
AJ: Took Viashino to a perfect record at the weekend tribal pauper special. Didn’t drop a game despite going down to 1 life in one versus a deck running shadow and horsemanship. This was ShardFenix’s last time hosting the tournament: All the best to him, and to his successor FlippersGiraffe.

Erik: Judged the Pre-release... what a swingy set!  Be VERY careful of infect creatures and the +x/+x green common.  Life totals become irrelevant in sealed.  Just protect and respect the infect!

AJ: You are looking forward to "trying" to break Genesis Wave? The card is already broken. No part of that card should ever have been printed. Well done WotC.

Oh and thanks for giving away my Mox Imprint tech. I already built the deck and was just waiting for scars to be released. Just add Clock of Omens, artifact lands, and an opponent's end of turn step. You'll have as much mana/artifacts as you want on your turn. hehehe

Thanks for pointing out the brokenness of the XG instant COMMON. Sigh. Will WotC ever learn? I don't know who is dumber. Them for making it or us for continuing to be abused by them.

Even in Standard with Green you can have 10 Mana np on turn 5/6 - Genesis Wave looks like the best way to cheat in up to 10 - 15% of your library (if you play with a heavy no of perms), with 1 spell. Will still need to be tested to see just how good - but it could definitely broken/abused

Looks like it was my comment that sealed Extinction's fate. :/ Silly me for getting 4.

In an elf mana ramp deck it's going to be awesome.

Also they gave us the complete spoiler early for either WW or M11

Hey guys, I'm always excited by Xaoslegend at Wed, 09/29/2010 - 13:13

Hey guys,

I'm always excited to see the new cards being released. Not sure about this set though, other than some bombs the mechanics seem fairly weak. Kind of reminds me of kamigawa tbh. Maybe I'm just not seeing the forest for the trees here.

I certianly think infect is a sweet mechanic, I kind of wish metalcraft had a number so it could be adjusted for more flexible design, like metalcraft 2 metalcraft 10 ect.

What They really need to do is print answers to planeswalkers that are easy and fast so that there is some meta between how much planeswalker hate you run vs how many walkers you run. Something like a putrify type cycle. eg 1G instant prevent all combat damage this turn or counter target activated ability of a planeswalker, put that planeswalker on the bottom of it's owner's lirary. 1B instant destroy target nonblack creature or nonblack planeswalker. 1U instant counter target planeswalker card or planeswalker activated ability, if an ability is countered this way return it's source to it's owner's hand. 1W instant prevent all damage to you, a planeswalker or creature until eot or counter target activated ability of a planeswalker and remove target planeswalker from the game. 1R instant deal 4 damage to target creature or deal 8 damage to target planeswalker. Sorry for all the examples but as you can tell I'm not a big fan of the power and what I consider the asymmetry of walkers in the game.

In any case I don't want to come off as a curmudgeon, I think walkers are a good idea and interesting just very badly implemented so far.

Thanks for publishing your podcasts and articles guys. I always check them out when I get a breather.

I think the reason they have by Paul Leicht at Wed, 09/29/2010 - 15:39

I think the reason they have not done that is they don't want such a meta to exist. Planeswalkers are a powerful yet not all powerful type. There are myriad of ways to win against them already. Adding in specific hosers would tip the scales against people playing with them. Note they did not reprint any hate for planeswalkers in M11 either. I believe this was a deliberate decision to make this era of magic about planeswalkers. Have no fear eventually such cards will fade from use either because the meta is no longer friendly to them or the inprint versions aren't as up to snuff as they have been previously. Obvious this isn't true for now but down the road I expect this to change. If it doesn't I expect there to be a lot more loudness and noise being made by disgruntled players.

COMBO COMBO COMBO by blau at Wed, 09/29/2010 - 16:30

AJ I solved your quandary. In the Podcast you were talking about a way to combo Prototype Portal w/imprinted Mox Opal with Dross Scorpion. There is a REALLY easy way to combo those three: March of the Machines and Deathbringer Thoctar. Yes, it is a 5 card combo, but that's what I call a "beginner's" combo. Five cards, that's child's play.

Step 1: Card Prototype Portal -> imprint Opal
Step 2: Play Dross Scorpion
Step 3: Play Death Bringer Thoctar
Step 4: Play March of the Machines
Step 5: Tap Portal to put a copy of Opal into play. It is a 0/0 and dies. That triggers Dross Scorpion and Deathbringer Thoctar. Put a counter on Thoctar and untap the Portal. Instant kill to all your opponents.

What do I win? A playset of Moats for tribal?

Wouldn't Atog (and it's ilk) by Paul Leicht at Wed, 09/29/2010 - 17:18

Wouldn't Atog (and it's ilk) be better for this purpose? I am sure it is nice to kill your op with infinite thoctar damage but how likely is that scenario to occur?

I suppose you could use Disciple of the Vault, but that's the EASY way to do it. Where's your sense of massive Johnny combo player?

You have to see the deck in action before you realize it kind of is a Massive Johnny Combo deck. Sort of.
