***PureMTGO brings you the latest in news, strategy and more for Magic Online.  Please remember that all articles are written by players and are not the thoughts or opinions of and it's staff.

Hey all! Welcome back to my second article about player run events. Many of you already know who I am, but I will explain briefly for those of you who don't and are new to mtgo or PUREMTGO.

My screenname on Magic: The Gathering Online is franknitty12002. I have been playing MTGO for roughly 14 months now. I was online roughly for two months when I first got involved with the PRE scene and one of the biggest (now diminished) clans on MTGO, CerealKillaz. I ran player run events with ck for roughly 7-8 months before the clan had a falling out of sorts and was disbanded. I  ended up joining with another clan; Only Hell Will Fill Your Void. It is a smaller clan, but a very dominant one in the Multiplayer Room on MTGO. It has roughly about 60 solid players and is well known. I served for that clan running events for roughly 3 months and made the decision to move on to another clan called HellzAngellz. This clan is HUGE. It boasts 21 chapters with over 200 members and continues to grow stronger daily! I have ran player run events for them since day one of joining and soon made captain of my own chapter. However, I am now clanless and running events as a rougue. I have ran two major events, Dark Wars and Saturday Night Melee, for some time now. I have spent well over a year establishing myself as an established PRE host in the PRE scene. My events are held on a weekly basis and have a good following, but we are always looking to expand and bring new players to the tables!

HOW DOES ONE FIND OUT ABOUT PRE'S? Well, there are several ways to find out what is happening in the ways of player run events. Utilizing the Wizard's message boards for example would be a good start. They have a sub-fourm dedicated purely for player run events. Player's can go there to find out what is happening in the online scene and PRE hosts can post their events there for the community. This sub-fourm is linked HERE.

There is a player run event calander that is maintained by some player's on MTGO and is constantly being worked on and improved for player's to be referred upon as a reliable source of player run events. It is not always up-to-date per se, but is a reliable source of events that are held weekly. It can be found HERE.

There is one more site I would like to discuss with all of you that has sprung up. It is known as MTGOClanWars. It is a newer site managed by a clan called Spell Casters. This site has a few events listed and is growing stronger as more people find out about it.

Ok, so what is a PRE anyways and how is it ran? A PRE, in it's simplest form, is a player run event. It is made possible by player's and card dealers whom want to give something back to the community. We tend to fullfill a void that Wizards of the Coast does not. There have been a couple articles here on PUREMTGO that have been written about the PRE scene and how they are ran. One is an article written by Dangerlinto called The Anatomy of a PRE. The other article, I have written myself; called PRE'S and Changes in the Community. These are both excellent articles explaining how PRE's are ran. They give good insight on the inner-workings of player run events. Those of you new to this scene should check these articles out to better familiarize yourself with how they are ran. That way, you will not go into these things not knowing what to expect.

Some events are small. Other's are big and have been running on a regular basis for some time. You can find a player run event for almost any format that you enjoy to play. This is purely an effort to get more people involved in the PRE scene. Alot of player's don't even know they exist! These events are free to play and for all to enjoy. They also vary in prize payouts. At any rate, how can one resist a free chance to win nice prizes! Tell your friends about these events and where to find them!

Wizard's of the Coast neither promotes PRE's or condemns them. That puts PRE hosts like myself in a rough spot when it comes to promoting player run events. We have to tread lightly in how we go about things because if we don't, we get punished by mutes and/or bans if we don't. I would suggest reading the PRE fourm FAQ on Wizards message boards.

An under-utilized room is ( /join ) pre chatroom. I am trying to get more PRE hosts to use this chatroom to spam their events. It is a private chat room and we are allowed to post tournaments in with absolute freedom. Any hosts reading this article, I encourage you to join this chat daily to hang out with other hosts and to spam your events. Player's, get involved! Tell your friends about this chat room. Encourage people to join it. I am also working on a couple things such as holding trivia in said chatroom and holding random mini parties for prizes. But I need people to get involved and the word to get around about this chat to make things happen. I would like to see more player's utilize this chat and help make it a popular place to find out about events and all-in-all, a cool place to hang out and meet other player's.

There is a bot currently being worked on to make PRE host's jobs a little easier.  It is being made by a good friend of mine and should hopefully be ready by this weekend. Its name is prebot. This bot will be in pre chatroom at all times. This bot will allow PRE hosts to input their tournament info about their events with it and the bot will take care of spamming events in pre chat. However, I would discourage player's from running out of this chatroom as soon as it spams an event they are interested in. As I stated earlier, I am looking to make this a cool hangout for player's and hold trivia, mini parties, etc. If you aren't in there, you may just miss out on something good!

And now for the part that pains me to discuss with all of you....

Alot of player's have been complaining alot within these events. They choose to place their focus on being hurtful to other player's. They focus on complaining about things within the event to the point of harassing sponsors. They have even chosen to get lippy with these great sponsors at times. What a HORRIBLE thing to do! These events are for the community. What that means is; player's of all calibers can come and see where they are in their metagame, meet other player's, become oriented with various clans in the community, and to just have some good fun! I can't even begin to tell you how much it pains me (as well as the sponsor's) when people want to complain about this great opportunity to better their collections, play events that WotC doesn't provide, and get a better grasp on their abilities with deckbuilding; etc.

There are  many events going on with even bigger things in the works that many are unaware of. Look for some big events to be happening soon with better prize payouts! Things like leagues, block constructed events, even Vanguard formats, are all in the works. These things will not happen without more player's getting involved in the PRE scene. And if they do, well, they just won't last long. It all depends on player's getting involved. The more player's that do, the more that PRE hosts like myself and sponsor's will be willing to do for the community!  There are many great things about player run events and things that are being discussed for the near future for MTGO. But it will take a strong following of player's to see that they don't fade away just as quickly as they begin. So tell all your friends, help educate the masses, and lets make these things happen! With the WotC's standpoint on the player run event scene,  PRE hosts are limited in what we can do to educate people. That's why there are some hosts, like myself, willing to go the extra mile to try to help the community the best we can. But we need your help too! We can only reach so many people. It is through the player's word of mouth, that we can really get the ball rolling and make better things happen for the community!

If you are into the PRE scene or just finding out about all of these events happening, We welcome you all and hope you enjoy this aspect of MTGO. Please help support it. You don't need to provide prizes, it is already being taken care of. Tell other's about PRE's and where to find them. Support these great sponsors by shopping with their bots and websites. And most of all, don't get strayed by the negative behaviors of the few that attempt ruining such a great thing going on! Player's will complain, things will always be happening... good or bad. But it is up to you, the individual, to make PRE's good or bad! I emplore you all to think about the things going on here and stop complaining when they aren't going how you think they should. If you lose an event, so what! There are many more daily you can play in and have just another chance at making yourself a better player and getting aquainted with some really great people on MTGO who just want to help the community to flourish!

Thank you all for your time. Any other PRE hosts, please contact me online or by email to become better organized. My email is

Till next time, Keep on keepin on...

I wish everyone who posted a comment was as thoughtful as you thescale but as we all know that will never happen.  I'm still trying to figure out the balance of censonship.  I want to allow people to speak their mind and the current rule is as long as there are no cursewords and your post has at least more than "so and so is a poopie head" I allow it.  I will rethink this to include attacks towards the authors that provide no constructive input though.  I need to talk to others and see what they think because a lot of people enjoy this site also for the freedom which the WOTC sites do not provide.  But as always this site may be owned by me but is you all's site.  I'll do whatever the majority wants most likely so feel free to sign up on the forums and speak your mind about what you want changed about this site.
Thanks again for the comments,

Neo - Thanks for your comments.  To answer your question ("isnt that the point tho.... to open up dialouge"), I am open to dialogue that is constructive - that is, "Does this piece add to the growth or well-being of the community?".  I grow frustrated, however, when I see a site that I frequent quite regularly become a venue for posts that consist of little more than name calling.  In honestly, I’m not open to dialogue that serves no other purpose than that of personnel abuse.Look, I’m neither a hater nor a fan of Mr. Colvin.  But I support the posting of his article, because he addressed issues of importance to him (and maybe others in the MTGO world).  I am not a fan of some of the responses, because they amounted to name calling.  when the posts are constructive, have at it.Thanks for your thoughts.Todd

As I have said before.  Anyone is free to write an article and this is just one of the many voices in the community.  The fact is that Frank does run a good tournament.  He knows what he is doing and he likes to run them.  His article has flaws in my opinion and it is by no means how I feel about pre's just because I allowed him to post it on my site.  I would love for someone else to write an article on pre's or anything else that is important to them that is going on in the world of Magic Online.  If you want to read censored articles all we have to do is go to the wizards of the coast boards.  This site is to allow people to speak freely about strategy, news and even sometimes personal opinions about the game.  Unless I write an article myself please do not assume that I myself endorse what the person is saying.  Please feel free to write your own take on the situation and as long as it is well written and fun to read i'll post it and even give you some store credit for your time.  Thanks for your comments and feel free to talk to me in game if this experience still left a bad taste in your mouth.

Mr.  Anonymous,
Feel free to write your own viewpoint on pre's and as long as it's fun to read i'll post it also.  This site is not about censorship and some of the articles I post might make people unhappy but just because I post them does not mean I agree with everything the articles say.  I'm just an outlet for news and articles that the PLAYERS write.  Unless I write an article myself please don't assume that I agree with everything the article says.

This is the thread from Hell, I tell you.  This is the first experience that I have had in relation to PureMTGO and/or MagicTraders that has left me wanting to take my business and attention elsewhere.

Heath, I admire your commitment to open dialouge, and allowing a forum for such discussion.  But this thread has degenerated into a "I hate Frank/Frank is Fine" name calling session.  As such, I would advocate putting the nix on any article or comment that didn't meet this criteria:

"Does this piece add to the growth or well-being of the community?"

If it doesn't, remove it.  I read most of whats been posted here, and as a player and a customer, it makes me want to go elsewhere.  Sorry. Heath - I hate to put it like that, but I know I speak for other players about this sentiment - clan members or otherwise.  Thanks for listening.

Frank everyone knows you're a JOKE. heath.. you blew your chance.....on a   JOKE   Charisma is what makes PRE's is what gets people to attend... not tyrannical dictatorship.. Make your money off selling cards don't spend money paying Frank ( the sell out punk ) nitty to try and promote you... it is a failed system. Try getting back in touch with your roots Heath... if you're smart you can find a way.

How did this turn into an attack on Heath?  I understand frustration at the article and perhaps even a level of frustation with Frank- but not to the level that has gone on here.   Heath is trying to do the same thing a host does- foster a community (and what we have here is a good foundation for one in my opinion).  Chances are I am biased since I write here, but still, let Heath associate with whom he chooses.

If you people do not like the way certain PRE's are run, then take initiative and start your own; you are players after all.

Ok... I would really like to know who you are, although I already have a pretty good idea. If you choose to slander me in such a way, then you need to put a name instead of making statements like this anonymously. There is only one person I have blocked because of PRE's and the person in question chose to take it upon himself to badmouth and curse a sponsor. Then when my sponsor blocked them, they chose to login another acct and do it some more. So it is purely their own fault for their actions and I was told by my sponsor to enforce the said ban. A perma banned was imposed on this account for my SNM event. It is still allowed to play in Dark Wars. If I saw the account wanting to play in Dark Wars, then I would unblock it for the event so it can play, but it would go right back on the blocked list right after the event. You say I am a terrible host... unfortunately, many other's do not share your sentiment. Have a nice day. :)

I do allow lieniency with that imparticular rule bud. It's when player's become abusive to other players and sponsors is when it is enforced.

I'm sorry but this is no way for an Organizer to act.

Part of the role is to be impartial and act as the mediator not the antagonist.

As a PRE runner myself i try to stay impartial and learn from my mistakes and from the suggestions of others. Rebutting these personal attacks really does nothing to help your cause. Your best bet is to be the better man and walk away.

At the rate you are going i am honestly suprised that MTGO Traders would be willing to have their name attached to someone who does not show them in the best light.

I would tread lightly and calm down. This is a game, enjoy it.

by SpikeBoyM at Thu, 06/28/2007 - 10:14
SpikeBoyM's picture

I am going to echo the sentiments of Rich here.  I have no doubt that you are a capable host, but you need to, on some level, seperate yourself from the event.  I know it sucks because you are taking time and energy (and what little we all have) and investing it into a community to try and make it better- and then some people who really do not care come in and undermine what you have attempted to do.  In these situations, do exactly what Rich said and try to walk away.  I know how hard it is, I have had my own troubles doing it in the past.

On another note, you might want to reexamine your event rules.  Whining and crying, as you put it, is part of the game- if it were not, we would have no bad beat stories.  I think giving automatic DQ's is a little harsh, and you may want to reconsider that tenet.

Being a host is walking a fine line- you are a highly individualized member of a community, trying to please everyone.  I applaud you for taking on that role and I urge you to take what you can from this article to make yourself an even better host.

Frank does do a great job running tournies even though his article did come off a bit arrogant when I first read it.  Try to give Frank more constructive criticism if you could and keep down on the personal attacks.  I admit Frank's article has some flaws but if you have played in a tournament that Frank runs you know that he does a great job.

Here's a little warning for all you jokers by Nitti at Wed, 06/27/2007 - 15:55
Nitti's picture

1.First person listed makes the table.

2.You have 5mins to get to your table after it is set up.

3. If you let the game hang for 5 minutes or more, you will be ejected from game.

4. You must remain silent during rules anounce and table listings.

5. Repeatedbadgering/spamming in tourny window is not permitted.

7. Harassing or badmouthing of host or his/her sponsor's is also considered grounds for IMMEDIATE DQ and a strict ban will be enforced!

8.If you break any of these's rules you will be DQ.

Consider this a formal warning. Flame all you want here, but you won't get away with it in events I host PERIOD!

A Neo, shut the apple up and shove your fat face with another doughnut cos i'm sick of hearing you orange. I'll tell you half the problems its jealousy. Your jealous about a ton of crap that isn't worth anyones time with some sorry half lime clan. So thats all I got to say about that. Next, Stop crying, your the host knitty, show some balls, set some examples, kick some people out, they orange, cos their jealous, they want cards banned because they're jealous, they don't have to participate in a free tournament. Block list is okay, thats all I got to say about that!

You know, we do have a thing called sportsmenship. I feel bad for the sponsers that have to deal with this shit, so great job guys.

Its sad when they have to pay hosts too, so events can run, thats what I feel horrible about. Lets pay so this event can run, christ, give me a break, I'll run them for free? Why cos, its for the community, and at the same time I can thorn out half the bs. People wanna start shit with me, fine, who the apple cares, online people who start shit have the most retarded mindset ever, its there way of saying I suck and I can't do shit in life but i'll start drama. Instead of even wasting an ounce of your time on fighting back with half the little bastards, just says hey pal, F-U your banned for this month, Have a nice day, the host should post them on some post entitled the wall of shame, and that way we can laugh @ them. It'd be to funny.

I would worry less about attracting people and care more about fixing the current problems. Your only going to get a manifesting problem, that will soon be to much to control, and you'll loose all tournies. If it was up to me, we say apple your stupid ego, apple your macho macheesmo, hell apple all your silly little shitty temper tantrums, be a damn man or woman and say You know what, I'm here to enjoy myself and relax, not here for drama, why the apple do I want to start drama, and yea you should place people on the ban list and if they even appear in the room once that night they're banned the next one, and so on and so forth.

Well.. I dunno dude, Theres always going to be the whiners and the people who hate the whiners, and whatnot, and working under a sponsor is stressful. Maybe this was nitti's way of venting.

This is why I always sponsor my own tourments for NQG, and run them like, once every few months. lol. I know neonetgen, and a few others, aside form myself tried to make "clan alliances" and "pre alliances" work to sort out the bad apples, but over all the mtgo playerbase is basicly a bunch of immature dramaqueens in my opinion. lol. Take control of the situtations and deal with them accordingly, in a mature and professional fashion, dont bend your own rules, and you'll be fine.

Ya know Frank I took a lot of heat for you after you left "OH", I had your back and stood up for you. NEO and several others in OH told me you are a backstabbing weasle, Liar, WHore , just to name a few. I never though I would say this but NEO is 100% right about you.

Your just like a prostitute and go to whomever give you $$(Cards). It realy pisses me off cause I was told several time what kinda person you are. I always told neo to piss off. All the dam drama started when you came over and asked to join Hellz ANgellz (Solisitaion of Prostitution). I took you in with all the BS I knew would follow. And you give some lame excuse.... cmon you are "Spineless" just like neo and OH said you are.

I expect you to give me all the cards I let you barrow, Ya know what get em. And after reading that cmon It doe'snt take a scientist to run an event. You sounded like a good guy but then again most spineless liars leech prostitutes do. YOU DID NOT INVENT PRE, Thats been going on way before you even thought about MTGO. I don't know what part Neo did But I am for sure Meuslix did 100x more for the pre scene than you will ever do.

Hellz Angellz accounts for a lot of registrations for player run events and at any time we run 10 - 20 deep in any given event, Remeber what happend to Broken Alliences a couple of weeks ago when we pulled from the event. Just keep that in mind the next time you intend to stab anyone in the back again.

Hurray for the Player Run Events........  lol....You JERK Frank!!!

One thing that you need to understand is that part of being a host is NOT being able to utilize my block button for people as I have to remain impartial and allow all people to play. So while other people can block trouble, I cannot.

As an event host yourself you reserve every right to block people and ban them from entering your events.   If somebody is disruptive, block and ban.

Maintaning a healthy and fun environment is far more important than you seem to realize.

RE by Nitti at Tue, 06/26/2007 - 14:25

One thing that you don't seem to realize is I run all bans through the sponsors. Yes, I enforce dq's, but I do not enforce bans without running them through the sponsors. Not all my sponsors see eye to eye and have different opinions with how things should be ran. With that in mind, I cannot just block everyone whom is disruptive. I have a job to do and I have to allow people to play in the event. So, that limits what I am able to do as a host.

Wow if it wasn't for someone like you i guess this game wouldn't have any PREs.

You wouldn't have any of this if it wasn't for Meuslix and myself. You wouldn't have events to host. You wouldn't have players in them. You wouldn't have sponsors to sponsor them. or the /join pre room. or the website...

Seriously be for real "me me me me me me" all you did was run events you didn't do any of the logistics to get the balls rolling. You didn't beg for crap cards to give people so they would play. You didn't negotiate with any of these sponsors to get them to pay out $$$ to your events.

thanks yet again for taking a nice steamy dump on those that did the real work to get you to this "dominant PRE host in the PRE scene"

I have to agree with the previous posters.  This article is basically sniping and trash-talk.  As adults, we should be above this sort of thing.

As a PRE player and host myself, I sympathize with the frustration that can be caused by people who are bitter, self-important, or just rude.  But ultimately, these people's actions speak for themselves.  If you do a good job hosting the PREs that you're responsible for, that's all that matters.  You have to trust in the average player's ability to tell when someone is contributing to the community and when someone is being destructive.

A unsubstantiated accusation of WoTC colluding to ruin the PRE scene is just another bunch of hot air that you and your clan(s) keep pumping out month after month.  The most damaging thing to PREs is not a single individual but the incestuous melodrama that all of these "demon themed" clans keep perpetuating.

I applaud for becomming more involved within the PRE scene but have doubts the people are running it. As far as I know Kitty, you've got history with these groups.  As long as these clans are still involved in PREs I'll probably steer clear away from them.

Heh, at least pick somebody who knows "alot" is two words and how to spell "fourm".

This article seems to be less about the changes in the PRE scene (have there been that many?) and more about an attack at one disruptive individual.  Coming from a community where there are know dissenters, calling them out publically rarely works.  From my expereince, the best way to handle these individuals is intra-PRE, not outside in a highly public place.  I have made the mistake of being vocal about such players and it has come back to bite me.
Other than that, it just seems petty to dedicate a significant portion of an article to bagging on one person, regardless of whether or not you name them.  Darn you Zac Hill for making this sort of thing the new thing.

P.S.- Before anyone tells me I did the same thing in a previous article, I know I did.  It was an error on my part and I have since appologized to the offended party.
