Lorwyn Events!:
The Lorwyn events are wrapping up this week, and the servers have stabilized, albeit with a rather hefty amount of lag.
The Lorwyn release events have not been a smooth ride.  Mutliple downtimes and extreme lag are impacting many players.  If you too are feeling frustrated please sound off in this thread: Lorwyn Complaint Thread
Lorwyn events start Friday, with new setups for the PE's.  Lets hope that the sacrifices help stability!  The MTGO community will be watching the availability closely this weekend.

Lorwyn events have been posted and there's lots to choose from.  It seems that there are many options available for all sorts of players to choose from.

Top 8 Drafts Removed from PE's:

A discussion about the payouts of each PE type (Top 8 2x vs non Top 8) has been going this week, located here.

Less crashes, more lag.  The server was 'up' more, but the state of the server made playing during much of the peak time impossible.

The biggest test of the Top 8-less PE's since the Sunday Debacle will be starting on Friday 11/2.  I guess we'll see what has changed.

Events have been quite stable since the horrible Sunday experiment.  We're also waiting to hear what the plan from WotC is regarding running the 4x Top 8 events during the Release Events.  It's been requested that they fire more frequently than every three hours.  Worth and Scott are looking into the best way to handle them.

There was a Sunday full of non top 8 PE's and stability still suffered.  There was over an hour of downtime on Sunday due to the server load and other items.  However, one of the biggest issues that would normally come from a crash would be corruption and manual clearing of an event which didn't seem to happen.

This week the Top 8 Drafts were removed from PE's in the 2.5 client.  However, there appears to be a bug in them and this caused additional downtime to occur on Thursday morning.  According to Worth Wollpert the prizes for these Top 8's will include the packs from the draft that didn't happen. Although this may change with V3.

Disabled Replays:

Replays are disabled for this week again since removing them appears to be having a positive impact on the server stability.

Not all ways of requesting replays were disabled.  They have been now.  This seems to have helped prevent the outright crashes, but we still have experienced a lot of lag during draft times.

In a further effort to reduce system stress, replays have been removed from the client's features.  Discussion about the change is below.

Play and Replay were in a boat...

The single client restriction is per user, not per machine.  Meaning that only one login per person is allowed.  Bots and people breaking this rule have had their accounts banned for 24 hours recently.  Again, leaving this here for reminder slash warning.

How to handle those breaking the rules

Outstanding Issues:

PayPal payments not going through for some users:

Some geographies have magically started to work again, although there hasn't been any official word on this.  More information here.

I have yet to hear that this has been fixed, but it seems that there aren't any complaints about being unable to purchase from PayPal, so this is possibly better.

While there hasn't been an official update yet, reports have come in that some of the previously impacted players have been able to get purchases through.

Still an issue.  I've bumped the thread below to hopefully remind them that we are still needing a status update.

I'm leaving this on the list because it's still an issue and a very big issue at that.

PayPal issues

Bug complaints:

Dredge + other effects:

This week it was discovered that Dregde is broken in certain instances.  Read this thread for more information: Dredge Bug

Sutured Ghoul + Tarmogoyf:

Still no update on this fix.  Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully we'll see some progress made in this arena sooner rather than later.

Still no update on this fix.  Hopefully, hopefully, hopefully we'll see some progress made in this arena sooner rather than later.

I had hoped to get an interview with a developer for this week but unfortunately it wasn't ready in time.  Long story short, this is still an issue as well as any other cards that received a functionality change with the Future Sight rules update.

This interaction is still broken.  And based on the latest Pro Tour results, this will be a popular deck in Extended and likely Classic.  This is not the first time that an MTG rules update has lagged far behind on MTGO and thereby invalidated a deck type.  Phyrexian Dreadnought, Flash and suspend cards like Lotus Bloom have had similar issues in the past year.

Sutured Ghoul + Tarmogoyf doesn't pump the Ghoul correctly.  And before anyone starts to yell about the Ghoul not caring about the Goyf's dynamic power, look up the Future Sight rules update information.  Or better yet, you can read about this question here and here.

MTGO Discussion Items:

Refund Policy Discussion:

This week there was a rather heated debate about the fairness of the MTGO refund policy and what should be expected from it.

Refund Policy Concern

Name Change for the Current MTGO 2HG Format:

The last week for this item, then it will be retired until something changes in its status.

So far 'Doubles' seems to be getting the most support.  Don't like it?  Let WotC know in the link below.

Once the Paper version of 2-Headed Giant is brought online we'll need to have a name for the current version that we are using.  Cast your vote below:

Ownership of Digital Items:

The question of what we actually own when it comes to our MTGO digital objects.

MTGO Ownership?

Tribal coming to paper Magic, with different rules:

It seems that our paper comrades will get to experience the fun and frivolity that is Tribal Wars... only there's a catch: the rules in Paper aren't the same as the rules Online.  Is this going to be another case of MTGO being out of sync, or are we going to get a rules update to match Paper so that one could test for paper games online?

Paper vs MTGO Tribal rules

Server Log In Availability:
A quick not on 11/14/07's atrocious downtime:  that was due to a 5 hour downtime that ended up going about 20 minutes over schedule.  I count the scheduled downtime as server unavailable since it's technically time that we cannot play with our cards.

Selective Weatherlight Card Review:

A lot of the good cards from Weatherlight have been released in some form or another on MTGO already. However, there are yet some cards that players in their respective formats may want to keep an eye on.

Classic PDC Weatherlight Cards to watch out for:

Nothing really. A couple of restrictive counterspells, a worse version of Ninja of the Deep Hours and some restrictive creatures... not much for PDC MUC in Weatherlight.

Haunting Misery
Cheap player burn in a black weenie deck, decent for dealing those last few points of damage.

Spinning Darkness
Alternate Cost Spells are usually rare (one recent exception is Snapback), this has a hefty cost to activate but I can see a deck making use of this card.

Empyrial Armor
A ridiculous common by any stretch. The latest incarnation of this card was a rare. I expect to see this card doing some damage.

Lava Storm
Mass removal is hard to come by in commons. This one does the mythical two damage to each .... creature, something that's notoriously hard to find in PDC.

Rogue Elephant
Maybe strong enough to warrant the risk, but with some minor tuning there are some potentially fast starts.

Turn 1:
Forest, Llanowar Elves/Fyndhorn Elves

Turn 2:
Forest, Rogue Elephant, sacrifice the tapped Forest, Harvest Wurm, get the Forest back (1/1, 3/3 and 3/2 in play on turn 2).

Fragile, and probably too draw dependant would be my guess, but aggro green/red has been proven to be a strong contender in the past and could likely be again with some minor help. I don't think that these green weenies will push it back, but it's something I'd watch out for.

Uktabi Efreet
5/4 for four, with a minor drawback for green. Powerful common creature for sure. Also comes with a built in timer if it gets enchanted with a Pillory of the Sleepless, which is always something that should be considered.

Mind Stone
This card sees play in tournament decks in Standard, so I can't imagine that this card won't be able to fit somewhere in PDC.

Prismatic Weatherlight Cards to watch out for:

Card(s) that will likely end up banned:

Noble Benefactor
Although it's symmetrical, it's an unrestricted search card. Look for this guy to get the axe sooner or later.

Cards worth checking out:

Veteran Explorer
Although since he's a symetrical effect he may not see as much play. He is however an amazing land searcher.

Fledgling Djinn
An easily splashable, efficient beater. Sui-Aggro decks are already pretty strong and I'm not sure if he'd make the cut, but I can see him being a worthy addition to a fast aggro deck.

Ancestral Knowledge
A strong effect for the mana, considering that for U1+1 you get the best card of the top ten, or, you can just use it to view and shuffle if there's nothing you desperately need. This large scale card selection is amazing.

A decently costed card for its ability. Definitely worth trying in a control oriented deck.

Striped Bears
2/2 + draw a card for 4. Good for those budget players who need flexible cards.

Change a losing game state into a much more favorable game state. Staring down a few mid sized creatures? No problem, just target them and pitch some cards. Sometimes you'll even get to slam your opponent too. This card should make some enemies right quick in a FFA too.

AbeyanceI mean, seriously... it's about as close to time walk as we're going to get any time soon. And considering that the other alternative is going for 60+ tix a pop, I'm going to put my efforts into collecting this card.

Serrated Biskelion
It's a creature, it's removal. What the heck, why not give 'im a go?

Mana Web
Mostly as one of those 'annoy the crap out of your opponent' cards. Especially when their duals and pain lands share so many colors. Watch your opponent squirm as they decide if they want to play a combat trick or a creature. It doesn't change the game a ton, but it sure does punish bad players. That alone makes it funny enough to see play.

Lotus Vale
It has a mighty drawback if it gets blow'd up or bounced... but boy howdy is it strong. Possibly strong enough? Time will tell I guess.

Classic Constructed worthy cards:
Some of these cards already exist online, but having them in Weatherlight gives new chances to get them, possibly cheaper.

Proactive combo protection that doesn't die to Swords to Plowshares. My Mind's Desire deck is looking forward to this card for protection.

Null Rod
If anyone needs me to explain why this card is anticipated in Classic they're welcome to post a question in the comments. Hint, it rhymes with Blaffinity.

See the explanation of Null Rod. Same thing. Affinity.

Public Hide List

Here's this weeks list of folks who have made the 'hide' list, where and why.  The same offer as last week: if you want your name off the list email me at erikfriborg at gmail dot com to request it.  In the case of false adverts in the selling board I'll verify and remove as applicable.  In the case of evading the buy/sell filter in the marketplace I will remove the offending user and document the removal.  Getting added back into the list afterwords will result in a permanent hide status that will not be removed.

Your downtime figure for 11/2 is wrong by Judah (Unregistered) (not verified) at Tue, 11/20/2007 - 01:27
Judah (Unregistered)'s picture

There was a discussion about this in a thread on the MTGO boards.  On 11/2 there should have 5 crashes (or 'unscheduled downtimes' if you prefer) and the server availablity figure should be 0.9111113.

This was proven from actual availability of login prompt.  The servers pinged up but weren't available for users to log into.

I liked the Weatherlight review.. brought to my attention many other cards other then Null Rod and Abeyance..

Gemstone Mines are Uncommon and Mind Stones are Common.. that should be worth it enough for standard players to pick up some of this set.

Way, way more expensive, and abeyance draws you a card.  I can't even guess what abeyance will cost but I firmly believe that it will cost many times less than chant.

Abey is run over Chant in many Legacy Desire decks (or at least it was last time I was reading up on them, the format changes pretty fast) due to it being just as easily splashable, and cantrips.  Being run over chant and Xanthid Swarm (over swarm since abey can't be hit by swords), and over chant because of the extra card it gives you when you're prepared to 'go off'

Having the choice between the two I'd still probably run abeyance. However, if you have the chants and don't want to buy the abeyances, then running chant would be fine too I imagine.

Desire is really fast as it stands right now, and when we get lotus petal it will gain a lot of consistancy.  I'm looking for it to be one of the combo decks to beat once Tempest is online.

I'd like to point out, if you want to protect your combo Abeyance-style, use Orim's Chant.  It costs 1 less mana.

Yes, I know it's expensive.
