This draft happened on January 1st.  I wwas able to draft a handful of times during the holiday Nix Tix events and thought this draft gave the most interesting choices.   The draft was in the 4-3-2-2 queue.

Table Ratings

Drafter's feeding me:

Rating 1731 (directly to my right)
Rating 1736 (two seats to my right)
Rating 1632 (three seats to my right)
Rating 1513 (my first round opponent)

Drafter's I am feeding:

Rating 1713 (directly to my left)
Rating 1667 (two seats to my left)
Rating 1647 (three seats to my left)

At the beginning of this draft my Limited rating was up to 1710.

On to the picks and my comments.

Draft:

Pack 1:

Neck Snap, Sentinels of Glen Elendra, Smokebraider, Gilt-Leaf Ambush, Moonglove Winnower, Kinsbaile Balloonist, Lairwatch Giant, Spellstutter Sprite, Spiderwig Boggart, Tideshaper Mystic, Knight of Meadowgrain, Vivid Marsh, Elvish Promenade, Knucklebone Witch, Dreamspoiler Witches

Pick: Dreamspoiler Witches

This was pretty straightforward.  The Knight of Meadowgrain deserves some consideration.  I'd rather not be passing the Sentinels of Glen Elendra but it still is not a strong signal that I am sending.

Pack 2:

Footbottom Feast, Lowland Oaf, Lignify, Weed Strangle, Kithkin Healer, Deeptread Merrow, Soaring Hope, Shimmering Grotto, Judge of Currents, Lace with Moonglove, Blind-Spot Giant, Crib Swap, Vivid Crag, Merrow Reejerey

Pick: Merrow Reejerey

Another pretty easy pick.  The Crib Swap is very good.  And I'm passing a decent black card in Weed Strangle but the Merrow Reejerey is a very strong signal (there is no rare Merfolk that would be chosen over it in my opinion) that my immediate neighbor won't be in Merfolk.

Pack 3:

Thieving Sprite, Gilt-Leaf Ambush, Hillcomber Giant, Streambed Aquitects, Stinkdrinker Daredevil, Wings of Velis Vel, Caterwauling Boggart, Goldmeadow Dodger, Faerie Trickery, Nightshade Stinger, Briarhorn, Ego Erasure, Timber Protector

Pick: Streambed Aquitects

Wow.  After two pretty easy picks, this set of cards threw me for a loop.   Briarhorn is splashable in almost any deck.  Timber Protector is a very good card to build Treefolk around.  A common and uncommon are missing from the pack.   Switching to green is certainly an option here.  I could also take Briarhorn to splash.   But Streambed Aquitects is a very good Merfolk and I strengthen the signal to my left that Merfolk are being cut.

Pack 4:

Hurly-Burly, Peppersmoke, Consuming Bonfire, Wispmare, Stonybrook Angler, Rootgrapple, Goldmeadow Dodger, Wings of Velis Vel, Flamekin Brawler, Ghostly Changeling, Wren's Run Vanquisher, Rebellion of the Flamekin

Pick: Ghostly Changeling

Ghostly Changeling is the pick here over Stonybrook Angler since it is a fine pumpable Merfolk.   Had I switched to green, I'd have a nice 3/3 two drop to add to my deck.

Pack 5:

Kithkin Daggerdare, Herbal Poultice, Avian Changeling, Lowland Oaf, Fistful of Force, Needle Drop, Springjack Knight, Heal the Scars, Ego Erasure, Ceaseless Searblades

Pick: Avian Changeling

Nothing much in blue, but Avian Changeling is a fine merfolk in a UW version.   I may need to drop my Dreamspoiler Witches if I don't get the mana fixing to run three colors.  I hadn't seen any decent white cards in packs three and four, so I was a little surprised to see this here.

Pack 6:

Soulbright Flamekin, Surge of Thoughtweft, Ponder, Heal the Scars, Skeletal Changeling, Shields of Velis Vel, Fire-Belly Changeling, Woodland Guidance, Flamekin Bladewhirl, Hostility

Pick: Ponder

Hostility here at Packsix.   The Briarhorn, Consuming Bonfire, Ceaseless Searblades path leading up to this pack would have been pretty nice.   I don't need Surge of Thoughtweft in my merfolk deck.   But I debated the full time between hate drafting Hostility and fully cutting blue with Ponder.

Pack 7:

Adder-Staff Boggart, Wispmare, Consuming Bonfire, Boggart Loggers, Ringskipper, Hunt Down, Triclopean Sight, Nath's Buffoon, Kithkin Harbinger

Pick: Boggart Loggers

Boggart Loggers is the best card in the pack and I'll sort out my splash later.

Pack 8:

Herbal Poultice, Oakgnarl Warrior, Deeptread Merrow, Fire-Belly Changeling, Aquitect's Will, Kinsbaile Skirmisher, Nectar Faerie, Benthicore

Pick: Benthicore

Benthicore is very welcome this late.

Pack 9:

Gilt-Leaf Ambush, Moonglove Winnower, Lairwatch Giant, Spellstutter Sprite, Spiderwig Boggart, Tideshaper Mystic, Knucklebone Witch

Pick: Tideshaper Mystic

The pick here comes down to Spellstutter Sprite vs Tideshaper Mystic and I am favoring merfolk at this point.

Pack 10:

Lowland Oaf, Deeptread Merrow, Soaring Hope, Shimmering Grotto, Lace with Moonglove, Blind-Spot Giant

Pick: Deeptread Merrow

The only merfolk in pack two tables!  This is a good sign.

Pack 11:

Hillcomber Giant, Stinkdrinker Daredevil, Caterwauling Boggart, Goldmeadow Dodger, Nightshade Stinger

Pick: Stinkdrinker Daredevil

I'm not playing with mountains, so I'll hate the Stinkdrinker Daredevil.

Pack 12:

Rootgrapple, Goldmeadow Dodger, Flamekin Brawler, Rebellion of the Flamekin

Pick: Flamekin Brawler

Pack 13:

Herbal Poultice, Needle Drop, Heal the Scars

Pick: Needle Drop

Pack 14:

Soulbright Flamekin, Heal the Scars

Pick: Soulbright Flamekin

Pack 15:

Hunt Down

Pick: Hunt Down

Pack 16:

Weed Strangle, Mudbutton Torchrunner, Woodland Changeling, Springleaf Drum, Kithkin Healer, Footbottom Feast, Axegrinder Giant, Elvish Branchbender, Amoeboid Changeling, Kinsbaile Skirmisher, Lace with Moonglove, Battle Mastery, Hoarder's Greed, Fallowsage, Mistbind Clique

Pick: Mistbind Clique

What to do here?  The other option is to take Fallowsage and plan for the Springleaf Drum to table.   But a 4/4 flashed-in flyer that taps all my opponents lands during his/her upkeep is just too good to pass up.  And I am comfortable taking the risk that I can muster enough faeries to make it work.

Pack 17:

Thieving Sprite, Kinsbaile Balloonist, Whirlpool Whelm, Boggart Loggers, Adder-Staff Boggart, Moonglove Extract, Goldmeadow Dodger, Faerie Trickery, Nightshade Stinger, *, *, *, Hearthcage Giant, Ingot Chewer

Pick: Thieving Sprite

This is the one pack that DraftCap messed up this draft.   I'm always happy to have a Thieving Sprite when I play faeries.  I'd rather not pick it second in a pack, though.

Pack 18:

Quill-Slinger Boggart, Surge of Thoughtweft, Cloudcrown Oak, Tarfire, Wanderer's Twig, Inkfathom Divers, Boggart Birth Rite, Ingot Chewer, Shimmering Grotto, Nectar Faerie, Treefolk Harbinger, Vivid Creek, Amoeboid Changeling

Pick: Amoeboid Changeling

A changeling to help both my merfolk and faerie count.   You can also use Amoeboid Changeling for all sorts of goodness, like making an extra faerie to use with Thieving Sprite; or turning off an opponent's Blind-Spot Giant.

Pack 19:

Hillcomber Giant, Sentinels of Glen Elendra, Stinkdrinker Daredevil, Battlewand Oak, Oaken Brawler, Cenn's Heir, Boggart Forager, Facevaulter, Hunt Down

Pick: Sentinels of Glen Elendra

Pack 20:

Fistful of Force, Soulbright Flamekin, Glimmerdust Nap, Spring Cleaning, Blind-Spot Giant, Wellgabber Apothecary, Gilt-Leaf Seer, Boggart Birth Rite, Rebellion of the Flamekin, Glen Elendra Pranksters, Jagged-Scar Archers

Pick: Glimmerdust Nap

Jagged-Scar Archers is a nasty card against any faerie deck.  But Glimmerdust Nap counteracts it very well.

Pack 21:

Kithkin Daggerdare, Herbal Poultice, Avian Changeling, Lowland Oaf, Exiled Boggart, Ponder, Heal the Scars, Kithkin Mourncaller, Hearthcage Giant, Colfenor's Urn

Pick: Avian Changeling

Another Avian Changeling late with no other white cards in the packs around it.  Weird.

Pack 22:

Inner-Flame Acolyte, Nath's Elite, Boggart Sprite-Chaser, Oaken Brawler, Rootgrapple, Triclopean Sight, Nightshade Stinger, Faultgrinder, Kithkin Harbinger

Pick: Nath's Elite

After looking at this in review, the Kithkin Harbinger to search out a changeling and provide a 1/3 blocker was probably a better choice.  Though I'd still be stuck between UWb and UBw.   The Nath's Elite is obviously a hate draft.

Pack 23:

Hillcomber Giant, Facevaulter, Warren-Scourge Elf, Blades of Velis Vel, Cenn's Heir, Ringskipper, Silvergill Adept, Militia's Pride

Pick: Silvergill Adept

Militia's Pride made it all the way around the table?  Perhaps these packs were just pretty weak in white.

Pack 24:

Springleaf Drum, Kithkin Healer, Footbottom Feast, Axegrinder Giant, Kinsbaile Skirmisher, Lace with Moonglove, Battle Mastery

Pick: Springleaf Drum

Over the Kithkin Healer?  Still not sure about this pick.   But I'm certainly running 3 colors, so the mana fixing artifact joins my pile of cards.

Pack 25:

Boggart Loggers, Goldmeadow Dodger, Faerie Trickery, Nightshade Stinger, Blades of Velis Vel, Ingot Chewer

Pick: Boggart Loggers

Pack 26:

Quill-Slinger Boggart, Surge of Thoughtweft, Boggart Birth Rite, Ingot Chewer, Nectar Faerie

Pick: Nectar Faerie

A decent ability on a 1/1 flyer for 1B.

Pack 27:

Oaken Brawler, Boggart Forager, Hunt Down, Giant's Ire

Pick: Oaken Brawler

Pack 28:

Fistful of Force, Spring Cleaning, Rebellion of the Flamekin

Pick: Fistful of Force

Pack 29:

Herbal Poultice, Heal the Scars

Pick: Herbal Poultice

Pack 30:

Oaken Brawler

Pick: Oaken Brawler

Pack 31:

Oblivion Ring, Wanderer's Twig, Hornet Harasser, Axegrinder Giant, Woodland Changeling, Kithkin Greatheart, Mulldrifter, Heal the Scars, Inkfathom Divers, Boggart Birth Rite, Ingot Chewer, Lammastide Weave, Flamekin Harbinger, Cloudgoat Ranger, Wren's Run Packmaster

Pick: Mulldrifter

A very challenging pick.  At the time I still wasn't sure how much white would be a splash or if it would be my second color.  Both Oblivion Ring and Mulldrifter are very good cards.  And Cloudgoat Ranger is pretty good as well.

Pack 32:

Smokebraider, Stonybrook Angler, Fertile Ground, Moonglove Winnower, Plover Knights, Faerie Trickery, Warren-Scourge Elf, Lairwatch Giant, Spiderwig Boggart, Boggart Forager, Pollen Lullaby, Marsh Flitter, Lammastide Weave, Rings of Brighthearth

Pick: Marsh Flitter

Pack 33:

Avian Changeling, Bog-Strider Ash, Mudbutton Torchrunner, Springleaf Drum, Oakgnarl Warrior, Judge of Currents, Lace with Moonglove, Blind-Spot Giant, Exiled Boggart, Captivating Glance, Battle Mastery, Flamekin Spitfire, Ancient Amphitheater

Pick: Judge of Currents

Avian Changeling or Judge of Currents?  I am light on two drops and have a Springleaf Drum and Benthicore so I take the Judge.

Pack 34:

Lowland Oaf, Weed Strangle, Kithkin Healer, Deeptread Merrow, Ingot Chewer, Amoeboid Changeling, Spring Cleaning, Exiled Boggart, Shields of Velis Vel, Faerie Tauntings, Kithkin Mourncaller, Colfenor's Urn

Pick: Weed Strangle

Removal.  But this pick puts me in UBw or UBW if I can get some more mana fixing.

Pack 35:

Hillcomber Giant, Sentinels of Glen Elendra, Dreamspoiler Witches, Oaken Brawler, Elvish Handservant, Dawnfluke, Broken Ambitions, Nath's Buffoon, Faultgrinder

Pick: Sentinels of Glen Elendra

I won't have enough Instant's or creatures with Flash to play two Dreamspoiler Witches and I would rather have a 2/3 Flash flyer.  Perhaps I'd be better off running the second Witches and bluffing?

Pack 36:

Hurly-Burly, Peppersmoke, Consuming Bonfire, Wispmare, Dawnfluke, Spellstutter Sprite, Elvish Eulogist, Vivid Marsh, Sentry Oak, Faerie Tauntings

Pick: Vivid Marsh

Color fixing over removal in the form of Peppersmoke.  Still not sure it was the right pick.

Pack 37:

Hurly-Burly, Paperfin Rascal, Runed Stalactite, Black Poplar Shaman, Shimmering Grotto, Elvish Eulogist, Giant's Ire, Seedguide Ash, Flamekin Spitfire

Pick: Shimmering Grotto

And more color fixing over another merfolk.   What is Seedguide Ash doing here?

Pack 38:

Lignify, Quill-Slinger Boggart, Scarred Vinebreeder, Springjack Knight, Bog Hoodlums, Protective Bubble, Flamekin Bladewhirl, Scattering Stroke

Pick: Scattering Stroke

Pack 39:

Axegrinder Giant, Kithkin Greatheart, Heal the Scars, Boggart Birth Rite, Ingot Chewer, Lammastide Weave, Flamekin Harbinger

Pick: Axegrinder Giant

Pack 40:

Faerie Trickery, Warren-Scourge Elf, Lairwatch Giant, Spiderwig Boggart, Boggart Forager, Lammastide Weave

Pick: Faerie Trickery

Pack 41:

Lace with Moonglove, Blind-Spot Giant, Exiled Boggart, Captivating Glance, Battle Mastery

Pick: Captivating Glance

Pack 42:

Spring Cleaning, Exiled Boggart, Shields of Velis Vel, Faerie Tauntings

Pick: Faerie Tauntings

Pack 43:

Dawnfluke, Nath's Buffoon, Ethereal Whiskergill

Pick: Ethereal Whiskergill

Pack 44:

Dawnfluke, Faerie Tauntings

Pick: Faerie Tauntings

Pack 45:

Elvish Eulogist

Pick: Elvish Eulogist

Round 1 Summary

vs Green Black (Profane Command, Dread, Nath of the Gilt-Leaf, Final Revels, Battlewand Oak, Warren Pilferers)

In game one, I was able to curve out effectively and my turn five Thieving Sprite revealed two Forests and Warren Pilferers.  After taking the Pilferers, my opponent didn't draw into anything and the game was over quickly.

Game two was simple.  A turn two Fertile Ground into turn five Dread and I did not draw an answer.

Game three was very similar to game two, except that I had Weed Strangle when he played Dread.   His clash for Weed Strangle revealed Profane Command - which was then shuffled back into his library along with Dread.  He had Kithkin Daggerdare and Bog-Strider Ash for four swampwalking points a turn and I was racing with my flyers.   I was able to use the lifegain ability from Nectar Faerie to set myself up with five points of flying damage coming in the following turn and my opponent at five life.  I was at seven life and my opponent only had the Daggerdare and Bog-Strider Ash that could attack effectively.  He had six lands in play and no cards in hand.  He top-decked his Profane Command and used the fear option and burned me for the game and match.

My opponent played well and did not make any significant mistakes that I could tell.  And he/she drafted a very good Green Black deck.

p4 Angler>G. Changling in dedicated Merfolk Deck

p6 I hate draft Hostility

p9 Spellstutter over Tideshaper

p11 Stinger over Stinkdrinker

p16 Clique even if just on ticket worth

p17 Extract over T. Sprite-where is your removal?!?

p21 or take Ponder as you have seen very little good White

p22 Stinger>Harbinger>elite  Why not go for the nuts farie draw rather than the useless hate?

p31 Soooooooooo  many Bombs.  Take Mulldrifter if fairies, C. ranger if merfolk

p33 judge makes merfolk work

p35 Witches is better and draws removal

p36 Peppersmoke as stated before me

p37 R. Stlagtite is good in Fairies and Merfolk

p43 Gift!

 Bulid:

I would probally fit in the Wiskergill, likely over Necter Fairie.

In general a pretty weak showing with very little removal.  better luck next time.

I don't think you respect Peppersmoke enough.  I think that you should have drafted a UB deck with double witches, double peppersmoke.

Thanks for reading and making a comment.  I agree that Peppersmoke is a very good card - especially in a UB deck with Dreamspoiler Witches.   I am not committed enough to Faeries at Pick 4 to take Peppersmoke over Ghostly Changeling - or are you suggesting that is the correct pick there?

And then I don't see the next Peppersmoke until Pack 36 and at that point I only have one Dreamspoiler Witch.   I can't justify taking the other one with the small number of instants that I have drafted to that point.

Thanks,

To clarify:

I can't justify taking the other one (Dreamspoiler Witch) with the small number of instants that I have drafted to that point.

And with only one Dreamspoiler Witch, I still think the color fixing is more important that one Peppersmoke.
