It's Friday, there are five colors in Magic, and for those of you so astute, you might have already figured out that today will be the wrap up of PureMTGO.com's Morningtide set review.  I know that this has been a very busy time for us here, but I hope that the content we have provided has given you a fresh look at the new cards that are coming to us on MTGO eventually.  I'm not sure when, but I would be willing to say that we do not get Morningtide until V3 comes out.  Just another reason to be jealous of the paper players am I right?

Anyways, we're going to get Morningtide, so let's finish up the review with a look at the Green Artifact and Land cards from the set.  I'm excited about a couple of them because green is my favorite color to play, and even though we were not lucky enough to get another Tarmogoyf, I feel like we have some tools to remain competitive in the environments.

Ambassador Oak - 3G
Creature - Treefolk Warrior (Common)
When Ambassador Oak comes into play, put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play.
3/3
#113/150

And we kick off the green review with something that is not even close to constructed worthiness.  For four mana I would like to think that I would get a little bit better than just just four power and two blockers, I mean there is another card in the set that is a 4/4 for four, and is just insane!  As it stands Professor Oak...I mean Ambassador Oak is a very strong limited card, but leaves much to be desired in the realm of constructed play.

Limited: ***

Bosk Banneret - 1G
Creature - Treefolk Shaman (Common)
Treefolk spells and Shaman spells you play cost {1} less to play.
1/3

If a tribe ever needed a Banneret it is the Treefolk tribe.  Of course, you're not going to make Doran any cheaper, but your sure to decrease the cost of many of the other treefolk in the block.  This card does make some solid shaman's cheaper, but you'll prolly not be powering out cheap Mad Aunties.  However, cheaper (Masked Admirer)s and Troll Ascetics may not be terrible.  Sadly this guy is not going to see play outside of a dedicated Treefolk deck, becuase cheaper trolls and the like are already accomplished by (Bird of Paradise) and Llanowar Elves.  In limited I like this guy a lot more, I see him as a green Lumengrid Warden, just a guy who clogs up the ground, but also makes your overcosted giant monsters cheaper.

Constructed: *
Limited:  ***

Bramblewood Paragon - 1G
Creature - Elf Warrior (Uncommon)
Each other Warrior creature you control comes into play with an additional +1/+1 counter on it.
Each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it has trample.
2/2

Did you know that Imperious Perfect and Wren's Run Vanquisher are both warriors?  It seems to me that this guy already has a perfect deck suited for him already, and I would not be surprised to see him played in Black Green Elves as soon as the set is legal for tournament play.  In limited there are a lot of Warriors that can play nice with this pseudo lord, so he is going to get high marks in my book!

Constructed: ****
Limited:  ****

Chameleon Colossus - 2GG
Creature - Shapeshifter (Rare)
Changeling (This card is every creature type at all times)
Protection from Black
{2}{G}{G}: Chameleon Colossus gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is equal to its power.
4/4
Illus. Darrell Riche
#116/150

I want to start off by saying this.  Bitterblossom has nothing on this guy.  I also want to say hello to my buddy William.  Let's get back to the Colossus.  He has protection from black, so that blanks Shriekmaw, Terror and Nameless Inversion.  He is a changeling so he gets to make Eyeblight's Ending useless.  Add in the power doubling ability, and this guy seems to be really good.  However, we have a smiliar card in Mystic Enforcer that hardly sees play, and that might be because the deck with the colors needed to cast him is subpar.  I'm not sure where the Chameleon finds a home, but if I were to hazard a guess it would be in sideboards of Red Green and White Green big mana.  Eventually there will be a deck for this monster, I just do not see it now.  In Limited he is a bomb.  I went 6-1-1 at the Morningtide prerelease on the back of this Cloverfield like monster.

Constructed: ****
Limited:  *****

Cream of the Crop - 1G
Enchantment (Rare)
Whenever a creature comes into play under your control, you may look at the top X cards of your library, where X is that creature's power. If you do, put one of those cards on top of your library and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
#117/150

I am unsure of Cream of the Crop.  A part of me says this is a ridiculous card that will allow you chain creature after creature while ensuring you hit your curve.  In fact, the other part of me says this card is just really good.  Anything that would help an aggro deck ensure that it gets men is a good card.  This card is really annoying to play against in Limited, as it essentially makes sure that every creature you cast becomes a top deck the next turn. I would love to see the late game play that has this card in play, and a lucky player who just cast Colossus.  Put the Cream on the stack, pump the guy before it resolves, and instead of four cards, you get to look at eight.  Seems really unfair to me.

Constructed:  ****
Limited:  ****

Deglamer - 1G
Instant (Common)
Choose target artifact or enchantment. Its owner shuffles it into his or her library.
#118/150

I can not think of a single deck that would rather play this over Krosan Grip or Seal of Primordium.  It will not see play over either of the previously mentioned because they are just better.  However in Block it is an answer to Oblivion Ring, so it could not be all that bad right?  I would main deck this in limited, because I value this kind of removal very highly.  I refuse to get blown out by Deathrender or anything like that.

Constructed:  **
Limited:  ***

Earthbrawn - 1G
Instant (Common)
Target creature gets +3/+3 until end of turn.
Reinforce 1 - {1}{G} ({1}{G}, Discard this card: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.)
Gremil finally felt in touch with nature - and felt a need to share the experience with others.
Illus. Kev Walker

There are better pump spells in constructed, but this one will ensure that goyf battles are won by you.  That is still not good enough for it to actually see play considering that if you want to win goyf battles you would run Llanowar Reborn in it's place.  It is a solid combat trick in limited.

Constructed: *
Limited:  ***

Elvish Warrior - GG
Creature - Elf Warrior (Common)
2/3

I've seen this guy before, I've played him in Standard premiere events before, and I am not likely to play him now.  Even though he plays well with the lord from this set, the two slot is heavy with competition.  He's not good enough now.  He more than likely was not good enough when I last played him either, but he is fun!  He is an unremarkable 2/3 body in limited.

Constructed: *
Limited: **

Everbark Shaman - 4G
Creature - Treefolk Shaman (Common)
{T}, Remove a Treefolk card in your graveyard from the game: Search your library for up to two Forest cards and put them into play tapped. Then shuffle your library.
3/5

Listen to me.  You're not going to play this in constructed.  You will play this guy in limited though, he thins the deck, and is a solid ground guy.

Constructed: *
Limited:  **

Fertilid - 2G
Creature - Elemental (Common)
Fertilid comes into play with two +1/+1 counters on it.
{1}{G}, Remove a +1/+1 counter from Fertilid: Target player searches his or her library for a basic land card and puts it into play tapped. Then that player shuffles his or her library.
0/0

Limited all star, and a PDC all star.  Nothing more to see here.  Notice it says target player so it can help out the land screwed partner in a two headed giant game!

Constructed:  * (***** in PDC)
Limited:  ****

Game-Trail Changeling - 3GG
Creature - Shapeshifter (Common)
Changeling
Trample
4/4
#123/150

It's a giant moose!  Bullwinkle here is a 4/4 for five, kind of like Arrogant Wurm but instead of discarding him and paying three, you need to have bannerets in play to make him three.  Solid limited guy though.

Constructed: *
Limited: ***

Gilt-Leaf Archdruid - 3GG
Creature - Elf Druid (Rare)
Whenever you play a Druid spell, you may draw a card.
Tap seven untapped Druids you control: Gain control of all lands target player controls.
3/3
Illus. Steve Prescott
#124/150

There are nineteen druid (and no, I'm not counting those darned changelings.) creatures in the Standard format.  Four of them tap for mana Boreal Druid, Leaf Gilder and Llanowar Elves are those guys.  One finds a land Civic Wayfinder, while another lets lands tap for any color.  However, we have a legendary Druid that gives a bonus everytime you play a forest.  Seems to me that a druid deck could be looked into in this format.  If you could build it, and play Summoner's Pact to use the grandeur ability of Baru, you could have a giant wurm if the Archdruid's ability fires.  Still, this guy may not see serious play, but remember what I said if a Druid deck ever storms the Standard scene.

Also, I did not mention that he turns every drawn druid into another card.  That seems really good as well.

In Limited, you're not going to have enough druids to make him worthwhile, and his stats are very weak.

Constructed:  ***
Limited: *

Greatbow Doyen - 4G
Creature - Elf Archer (Rare)
Other Archer creatures you control get +1/+1.
Whenever an Archer creature you control deals damage to a creature, that Archer deals that much damage to that creature's controller.
2/4

What is wrong with this guy?  In Standard there are six archers.  So that is a start.  The other archers at least kill a guy.  This one does not do that, but has a super arrow that hits the controller.  He is a 2/4 for five mana, and that may be the biggest strike of all.  He's not playable in Standard as is, and is very underwhelming in limited.

Constructed: *
Limited: *

Heritage Druid - G
Creature - Elf Druid (Uncommon)
Tap three untapped Elves you control: Add {G}{G}{G} to your mana pool.
1/1

I'm really not excited about this guy, there are a bunch of elves but unless there is an elf control deck, I feel like it could not benefit from the burst of mana he gives.  In limited he is a touch better, as your early drops could be used to accelerate bombs.  Still not happy to see this guy.

Constructed: *
Limited: **

Hunting Triad - 3G
Tribal Sorcery - Elf (Uncommon)
Put three 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature tokens into play.
Reinforce 3 - ({3}{G}, Discard this card: put three +1/+1 counters on target creature.)
"Eyeblights are easy to track. Just follow the imperfections."
Illus. Jim Nelson

You're not going to play this in Constructed.  Scatter the Seeds was good because it was playable at instant speed, and often times cost much less than five because of convoke.  This is a sorcery, and therefore is not very good outside of a casual Elf Door of Destinies deck.

This is a very good combat trick in limited, four mana for a three power toughness boost is very good.

Constructed: *
Limited:***

Leaf-Crowned Elder - 2GG
Creature - Treefolk Shaman (Rare)
Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Leaf-Crowned Elder, you may reveal it. If you do, you may play that card without paying its mana cost.
3/5
Illus. Wayne Reynolds
#128/150

Wow.  They sure are pushing treefolk hard right?  I could see this guy casting a free Doran for you more than once.  I like the potential of the Treefolk tribe largely due to this man.  Casting stuff for free is really good.

In limited this guy is a bomb in the right deck.  Have this guy?  Can you see yourself playing a free Oakgnarl Warrior?  That is very exciting to me.  If you are packed full of Treefolk in sealed things could get very nutty for you.

Constructed:  ****
Limited: ****

Luminescent Rain - 2G
Instant (Common)
Choose a creature type. You gain 2 life for each permanent you control of that type.

Why do I see this as nothing more than a sideboard card for the tough Black Green Elves mirror match.  For real.  Early game you are like plus six life.  Late game if you have been working Perfect, you're getting a lot more.  Is it better than Warhammer?  No, but it could be a cute card to play with.  Big old yawnfest in Limited though.

Constructed:  ***
Limited: *

Lys Alana Bowmaster - 2G
Creature - Elf Archer (Common)
Reach
Whenever you play an Elf spell, you may have Lys Alana Bowmaster deal 2 damage to target creature with flying.
2/2
#130/150

There are not enough fliers to warrant inclusion in Standard.  Limited it's a good elf.

Constructed:  *
Limited:**

Orchard Warden - 4GG
Creature - Treefolk Shaman (Uncommon)
Whenever another Treefolk creature comes into play under your control, you may gain life equal to that creature's toughness.
4/6

If there is a Treefolk deck, this guy could fit in it, other wise, no thanks.  Limited, it's not terrible, plus it gives you an excuse to play the higher casting cost Treefolk in your sealed.

Constructed:*
Limited:**

Reach of Branches - 4G
Tribal Instant - Treefolk (Rare)
Put a 2/5 green Treefolk Shaman creature token into play under your control.
Whenever a Forest comes into play under your control, you may return Reach of Branches from your graveyard to your hand.

Out of all the cards that have this return clause, this one seems like the easiest one to fulfill.  I'm not impressed by what it does though,  I would compare it to Beast Attack which made a 4/4 for a lot more green mana and only came back once, but for five mana, I would think I could get a lot better than an army of 2/5 trees.

I'm pretty greedy though.  I want it to do more.  The more treefolk I see, the more I like a Treefolk deck.  in limited you run this if you are in green clearly.  It is a bomb in the right deck, but you're not going to splash for an instant speed 2/5.

Constructed: **
Limited: **

Recross the Paths - 2G
Sorcery (Uncommon)
Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a land card. Put that card into play and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. Clash with an opponent. If you win, return Recross the Paths into its owner's hand

Very good in limited, though it is a bit slow.  Not so much in Constructed.

Constructed: *
Limited: ***

Reins of the Vinesteed - 3G
Enchantment - Aura (Common)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2.
When enchanted creature is put into a graveyard, you may return Reins of the Vinesteed from your graveyard to play attached to a creature that shares a creature type with that creature.
#134/150

My creature enchantments are not going to cost four unless they do something stellar in Constructed.  It's not terrible in limited, you are however inviting yourself to get blown out by any targeted removal.

Constructed:  *
Limited:  **

Rhys the Exiled - 2G
Legendary Creature - Elf Warrior (Rare)
Whenever Rhys the Exiled attacks, you gain 1 life for each Elf you control.
{B}, Sacrifice an Elf: Regenerate Rhys the Exiled.
Once a famed hunter and packmaster, now a renegade seeking his own path.
3/2
Illus. Steve Prescott

This guy is very good.  He will fit in most of the elf builds, but in a small number.  He is not going to win the match by himself, but he will help swing some life in your direction.  However, again in a deck that has so many cards competing for slots, is he better than something that is already being played?  I'm not thinking he is.  Therefore, he may end up in the board.

Limited.  Regenerating lifegaining bomb.

Constructed:  ***
Limited: ****

Scapeshift - 2GG
Sorcery (Rare)
Sacrifice any number of lands. Search your library for that many land cards, put them into play tapped, then shuffle your library.

Lot's of potential here.  The sacrifice is not a part of casting the spell so countermagic is not going to make you sad.  You do not have to get a certain kind of lands, so you can take your color screwed draw and fix it when you cast the spell.  It will thin the deck of cards.  I can see Big mana decks taking advantage of this.  However, I can see a new deck coming from this spell.

It's solid in limited because of all the previously mentioned stuff as well.

Constructed:  ****
Limited:  ****

Unstoppable Ash - 3G
Creature - Treefolk Warrior (Rare)
Trample
Champion a Treefolk or Warrior (When this comes into play, sacrifice it unless you remove another Treefolk or Warrior from the game. When this leaves play, that card returns to play.)
Whenever a creature you control becomes blocked, it gets +0/+5 until end of turn.
5/5
Illus. Brian Snoddy
#138/150

So this is a guy that is really a 5/10 in combat.  He is fairly priced at four mana.  Treefolk decks may be for real after all.  In limited he lets you rule the combat step.

Constructed: ****
Limited:  ****

Walker of the Grove - 6GG

Creature - Elemental (Uncommon)
When Walker of the Grove leaves play, put a 4/4 green Elemental creature token into play.
Evoke {4}{G}
7/7

I do not see this in any constructed decks.  In limited I see it mostly becoming a 4/4 for five mana which is not terrible at all.

Constructed: *
Limited:***

Winnower Patrol - 2G
Creature - Elf Warrior (Common)
Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Winnower Patrol, you may reveal it. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on Winnower Patrol.
3/2
Illus. Eric Fortune
#139/150

I am asserting my right to say Yawn here.  Yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwn  Also, he is a three drop, that would be competing for other three drop spells in the elf deck.  I think this guy may be better than the legend, because he is going to get huge, but I am not impressed by him.

Constructed:  **
Limited: **

Constructed

Wolf-Skull Shaman - 1G
Creature - Elf Shaman (Uncommon)
Kinship - At the beginning of your upkeep, you may look at the top card of your library. If it shares a creature type with Wolf-Skull Shaman, you may reveal it. If you do, put a 2/2 green Wolf creature token into play.
A chorus of howls answers his call.
2/2
Illus. Jim Murray
#140/150

Again another two drop that is fighting for a shot at the big leagues.  He might be better than the Vanquisher because he makes a lot of guys, just like Perfect does.  In limited he is a 2/2 for two that will sometimes make you a wolf.  HOWL!

Constructed:  ****
Limited: ***

Here are the top five in my opinion among the green cards in the set for Constructed play.
             5.  Scapeshift
            4.  Chameleon Colossus
            3.  Bramblewood Paragon
            2.  Leaf-Crowned Elder
            1.  Cream of the Crop

Honorable mentions go out to the Banneret (I know I gave him a low rating, but I think there is a lot of potential in him) and Wolf-Skull Shaman.

Artifact

Cloak and Dagger - 2
Tribal Artifact - Rogue Equipment (Uncommon)
Equipped creature gets +2/+0 and has shroud.
Whenever a Rogue creature comes into play, you may attach Cloak and Dagger to it.
Equip {3}
#141/150

For all equipment, please scroll to the bottom of this section.  I've lumped them all together, in what I feel is a fair look at them.

Constructed All:  * to ***
Limited All: * to ****

Diviner's Wand - 3
Tribal Artifact - Wizard Equipment (Uncommon)
Equipped creature has "Whenever you draw a card, this creature gets +1/+1 and gains flying until end of turn" and "{4}: Draw a card."
Whenever a Wizard creature comes into play, you may attach Diviner's Wand to it.
Equip {3}
#142/150

Door of Destinies - 4
Artifact (Rare)
As Door of Destinies comes into play, choose a creature type.
Whenever you play a spell of that type, put a charge counter on Door of Destinies.
Creatures you control of that type get +1/+1 for each charge counter on Door of Destinies.
#143/150

I think this is a fixed Coat of Arms  and one that takes advantage of the tribal spells in the block.  I can see this being played of course in all of the tribal themed decks, but the on that actually springs to my mind as the best one would be Goblins.  Often times your team is smaller than the team of other aggro decks, and this would be a great way to ramp up to huge dudes.  It's not likely to see play, but I could see it getting there.  In limited I'm not going to be dissapointed that this is my rare for sealed, but I would be not be happy about getting it unless I had a really good tribe to run it with!

Constructed:  **
Limited: ***

Obsidian Battle-Axe - 3
Tribal Artifact - Warrior Equipment (Uncommon)
Equipped creature gets +2/+1 and has haste.
Whenever a Warrior creature comes into play, you may attach Obsidian Battle-Axe to it.
Equip {3}
It's the flint that sparks a warrior's rage.
Illus. Jeff Easley
#144/150

Thornbite Staff - 2
Tribal Artifact - Shaman Equipment (Uncommon)
Equipped creature has "{2}, {T}: This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player" and "Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from play, untap this creature."
Whenever a Shaman creature comes into play, you may attach Thornbite Staff to it.
Equip {4}
Illus. Jesper Ejsing
#145/150

Veteran's Armaments - 2
Tribal Artifact - Soldier Equipment (Uncommon)
Equipped creature has "Whenever this creature attacks or blocks, it gets +1/+1 until end of turn for each attacking creature."
Whenever a Soldier creature comes into play, you may attach Veteran's Armaments to it.
Equip {2}
Illus. Alan Pollack
#146/150

Okay you all, this maybe the easy way out, but I am going to take it.  All of the equipment in this set is not constructed worthy.  I mean when you look back at equipment that has been played you get an all star list of artifacts.  Cranial Plating, Skullclamp, Loxodon Warhammer, and Jitte have all seen a lot of play, and are pretty much considered to be game wrapping artifacts.  I feel that the closest equipment we have out of the new ones is Veteran's Armaments.  However, in a solider deck (Which is Kithkin pretty much in my mind.) it's still not better than Warhammer.  The other ones are just cute versions of other spells we have seen.  The Sharpshooter Equipment is a powerhouse in limited, as is the Tome equipment.  Cloak and Dagger has a cool name, but I'm not impressed by what it does.  Stear clear of these underpowered artifacts in constructed play.  In limited play you run these, as they are all good enough to be main decked.

Land

Murmuring Bosk
Land - Forest (Rare)
({T}: Add {G} to your mana pool.)
As Murmuring Bosk comes into play, you may reveal a Treefolk card from your hand. If you don't, Murmuring Bosk comes into play tapped.
{T}: Add {W} or {B} to your mana pool. Murmuring Bosk deals 1 damage to you.
#147/150

Well, I have long thought that WOTC had a policy that it's lands would not be better than a basic land.  I think Bosk is a step up from the Basic Forest but only in certain decks, like Doran, which seems to be tailor made for this deck.  You can even use fetch lands in Extended to smooth out your draws in Doran.  This card is better than Caves of Koilos in the deck and should replace them as soon as the set is legal.  For other decks, this gives green an easily searched source of a splash color, so it could even see play in Elves if we ever wanted a white splash.

As for limited it is only good if you have the colors.  It's going to get a lower rating there.

Constructed:  *****
Limited: *

Mutavault
Land (Rare)
{T}: Add {1} to your mana pool.
{1}: Mutavault becomes a 2/2 creature with all creature types until end of turn. It's still a land.
Some changelings born at Velis Vel never return, but their essence never leaves.
Illus. Fred Fields
#148/150

Man lands are almost always good, and with a few exceptions almost always played.  This one will be more like Treetop Village than Ghitu Encampment.  It may be lacking the the pump that Mishra's Factory has, but you do you know how many lords are going to give their bonus to an animated factory?  I can not think of any, and bet you can not either.  Essentially this card is a 3/3 for one mana when any of the lords are in play.  In other decks, it's going to be a threat that slips under neath countermagic, and is hard to kill with most mass removal.  Get a play set of these as soon as possible, you will not regret it.

Limited this card is also good, but not nearly as good as it is in Constructed.

Constructed:  *****
Limited: *****

Primal Beyond
Land (Rare)
As Primal Beyond comes into play, you may reveal an Elemental card from your hand. If you don't, Primal Beyond comes into play tapped.
{T}: Add {1} to your mana pool.
{T}: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to play Elemental spells or activated abilities of Elementals.
Illus. Mark Tedin
#149/150

Cool it's the elemental tribes special land.  It's pretty good, but will only see play in a dedicated elemental deck.  In limited if you play it, it really forces you to play the elementals as well, and sometimes you get busted pools that have the quality ones, and other times you are not going to be so lucky.  I'd stay away from this in Limited.

Constructed:  ***
Limited:  *

Rustic Clachan
Land (Rare)
As Rustic Clachan comes into play, you may reveal a Kithkin card from your hand. If you don't, Rustic Clachan comes into play tapped.
{T}: Add {W} to your mana pool.
Reinforce 1 - {1}{W} ({1}{W}, Discard this card: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.)
Illus. Fred Fields
#150/150

Let me get this right.  Fae, Giants, Elves, Goblins, Merfolk, Treefolk, and Elementals all get a land that produces more than one color of mana.  Kithkins get this?  Really?  I mean both of the two colored lands that this deck supports deal damage to the player, why would WOTC want to break the cycle of tribe lands up so it could push Reinforce onto a land?  Kithkin Meadow would have been a lot better I think (Heh, Kithkin Meadow.  That would be a terrible card name.)  Limited it gives you a plus one counter so it is at least a playable trick late instead of a terrible top deck.

In my local metagame, 3 of the top 4 spots in a recent 24-person Standard tourney were fairy decks. Though the archer might not be a main-deck play in an elf deck, I think it may be a very solid 4-of in the sideboard.

Now with, Oona's Blackguard and Bitterblossom, I fear the fairy assault is just beginning....

Overall not bad.  I am glad to have read yours.  others I can't say I finished because I felt they were so far off.  Someo of your star ratings I must say I disagreed with, but nothing major just 1-2 here and there which is all a matter of how I feel the rating is.  2 star to me could be the same as 3 star to u.  Good job.

Heh.

That is the reason set reviews are hit and miss.  My metagame is much more different than yours, but in the right one, the archer is insane!  I undervalued the archer based on what I personally see on MTGO, and what I see in my own real life metagame.  Am I off, more than likely yes, and I can see it going into the board to combat the Fae as well.

You drastically underestimate the common archer in Limited. Its power to make life very, very difficult for the best limited archetype in the faeries. In my pre-release flight my 1st two opponents both had two each and blew me to pieces. 0-2 drop gg.
