We'll get to the draft in just a moment, but first I want to talk about a few Morningtide cards that have some application in Lorwyn Block.  Currently, the best deck is Blue Black control.  It's slow, but it is brutal and efficient.  Almost every card in the deck is either a two-for-one or addresses the few weaknesses the deck has.

With the introduction of Morningtide, we may see a slight shift.  Three decks seemed to get decent boosts while Blue Black control didn't get much.  First, Faeries get Vendilion Clique, another solid body and effect.  This can allow them to drop another efficient, instant-speed threat that can force Blue BLack  to address, plus you may be able to take their answer and stick it on the bottom.

Next, Rogues are an exciting archetype that everyone wants to try out.  Grimoire Thief excites me, allowing you to get a beat in on turn three, then possibly counter a key spell.  All the rogue one-drops may well be playable, even through individually they aren't awesome, they quickly enable Ninjitsui... errr Prowl costs.  Nightshade Stinger and Prickly Boggart are likely choices to start with, and Merrow Witsniper, while bad, might be played to ensure you hit them one turn two and drop a Prowled spell.  The two cards I look forward to trying the most are Morsel Theft, which seems good against control (as a little reach) AND aggro (to get ahead in a race), and Noggin Whack, simply because potentially a deck could contain Thoughtseize, Noggin Whack and possibly even the Clique for plenty of hand disruption to complement the various other Prowl effects.

The third gainer in block would seem to be Goblins, who share a card with Rogues that is pure (potential) card advantage.  Auntie's Snitch can be played on the cheap, especially in conjunction with another quick Goblin Rogue tool, Frogtosser Banneret, then can be returned any time you get Prowlish damage again, allowing you to recover from mass-removal more easily, and since he's Black, he beats Shriekmaw in all the ways that matter.  Goblins are already a very Black bunch of fellas, and this will give them the edge against the 'maw-relying Blue Black deck.

Blue Black control is probably still the best deck, as it won't be packed with any less awesomeness, but at least it may be competitive during the expanded block season.  The next thing I'll go over is a draft that I THOUGHT went well, but apparently didn't, as I lost in the first round.  That, or I just suck at limited play-out.  I'll present the picks, my thoughts on some of them, and my final decklist, then a quick walkthrough of the quick loss I suffered.  As always, comments are appreciated, and please help me get better!

Some cards are omitted from this pack.  I think the rare was Colfenor's Urn.  I take the card that seems to be the best in a vacuum.  I didn't give as much consideration as I should have to Battlewand Oak. I don't really like Witches, as even though they're very powerful, I hate playing Faerie decks.  Plover Knights aren't awful I guess, but the Witches cost only 1 B, so they can be splashed if I end up wanting to go that route.

This pick had another Witches, which I really should've just taken.  I got greedy though, and took the rare (and MAYBE bomby) Doran.  However, I think that this signaled open Faeries as I passed two strong ones (Sentinels and Witches) for the pack three downstream.

I considered Weed Strangle, but it's rather uninspired removal compared to my other options of Merrow Harbinger and the veritable bomby Summon the School.  I took this to mean that Merfolk would be somewhat open, much as my passee could guess that Faeries might be due to what I passed him for his third pack.

This pack seemed kind've bad, but the 'whelk might have been better.  Otherwise, I dunno, maybe the Twig if I wanted to run the Doran special, but I figured I would see more mana-fixing and Mournwhelks later.

I'm not really sure if this card is good, but it seems alright, and is in-color "removal".  Really though, Zephyr Net may well have been the better choice.  Perfect for the G/x aggro decks that always seem to foul me up.

I think it might have been smarter to drop the Black altogether, adding in another Glimmerdust Nap (As it isn't QUITE as good as Inversion, but is much the same effect in-color) and maybe a Spellstutter Sprite or Whirlpool Whelm (because I really just needed to buy some time to set up my Fishmen.  Another problem was that I probably should've picked a different third color and possibly tribe, but being in the two bombiest tribes seemed like it would work considering the cards I was seeing/opening.  If I'd gone JUST Merfolk and maybe Giants/Kithkin as my splash, I think I might've seen some better cards and been in a better position to take some of the solid white/red stuff I saw.  

After looking the draft over a second time, the second-pick Doran clued me in that GBW probably actually would have been a good way to go.  If I had let all the blue flow going both ways, and simply cut Black, and to a lesser extent Green dudes and white removal, I could've had a better deck it looked like, and that's without seeing the cards I might have seen had I actual

Here's the playout of my first round match.  I go first, we both keep.  I play Island, he has a Swamp.  Island go.  He plays a Forest and a Leaf Gilder.  I have a Swamp and pass.  My curve sucks.  This is a problem I find that I have in a lot've my drafts.  I get a powerful deck, but it can't interact until turn three to four, and since it needs its lands so badly, I am more easily wrecked by mana-screw.

He beats down and drops a Kithkin Mourncaller, a card I often overlook when drafting.  He has a Swamp also, and passes.  I have another Island.  Three Islands means I win right?  He hits me with his guys, and tries an Elvish Branchbender.  I Counter with Scattering Stroke, trying to ramp mana to play two spells next turn.  He reveals Seedguide Ash, and I flip up a... Broken Ambitions.  Dang.  I angrily slap mine on the bottom while he keeps his on the top.  I play out a Plains and a Dreamspoiler Witches.  He attacks into me, and I take, then he drops Woodland Changeling and Moonglove Extract, then uses the Extract to drop my guy.

I drop an Island and Summon the School.  He attacks me.  I have both tokens block Mourncaller, to limit his draw from him.  He plays Seedguide Ash.  I play Shimmering Grotto and hope a Benthicore can stem the bleeding.  He has Kithkin Daggerdare on his turn, and passes it back to me.  I play Merrow Harbinger and incorrectly choose to get a Silvergill Douser.  I should've just grabbed Nameless Inversion.  

He blows away the Harbinger with Eyeblight's Ending on my EOT.  He attacks.  I block his Ash with my Benthicore, and throw a token to the path of the Ash also.  He pumps with his Daggerdare, and then Nameless Inversion hits my token.  I drop two guys on my turn, and he attacks and kills me.

One big error I made in my sideboarding was that I should have brought in some number of Whirlpool Whelm to buy time for my Mermen set-up, as I mentioned earlier.

Game two, I played first.  We dropped lands on our first two turn, and he had a Daggerdare to follow those lands.  I had land on turn two, as did he, with a Mourncalled to follow it.  He attacked with the Daggerdare.  I played Pestermite on his turn three EOT, tapping his new guy.  He didn't attack.  Pestermite pestered him for two damage, then I asked his Daring little Kithkin to take a Glimmerdust Nap.  He attacks back with the Mourncaller.  I have a (Turtleshell Changling), and more Pestermite beats on my turn.  I play Paperfin Rascal, hoping to see a 3/3 or a nice card.  I show a Swamp, which I need, sadly, and he has a Lys Alana Huntmaster.  Not looking good for the hometeam...  He attacks with his guys.  Paperfin blocks a token, and Turtshell block.  He drops  Gilt-Leaf Ambush on my EOT.  I put Benthicore on the bottom of my library (I had one in hand), and he keeps Moonglove Extract on top of his library. 

He plays Extract, then attacks with his tokens and Mouncaller.  I block the 'caller with the Turtle.  He uses Extract to kill the Turtle.  This was REALLY dumb of me, as I KNEW he had it, and STILL didn't get a token instead of no Mourncaller.  I can't explain why I did this honestly.  Awful.  I will now light myself on fire.  He plays the Huntmaster.  I have a Swamp, then attack with my flyer.

During his upkeep, I drop another Pestermite to tap his Huntmaster.  He attacks with his team.  I take the damage.  During my attackers step, he has Eyeblight's Ending to kill one of my Mites, AND get a token.  I cast Broken Ambitions.  I win the clash with Sentinels of Glen Elendra over Leaf Glider, but then he has Nameless Inversion to do the Mighty Mite in.  My Mite hits him along with my Paperfin.  He attacks back.  I don't attack, simply Summoning the School.  He has a Weed Strangle for my Rascal, and kills me.

So, where did I go wrong, aside from abominable plays.  What would you have done differently?  Please discuss this, and let me know if there's anything else you would like to see.

I know it has been said before, but seriously?


I think douser is the second best common ( mulldrifter is obv better)  for blue. It's good in merfolk and faeries.

only blue deck he doesnt work in is the RU elemental, and even there he's decent.

I also would have taken the turtleshell over the sentinals.

nobody runs into sentinels and while a 2/3 flier for 4 is fine, your merfolk really want a big ass butt to block.  

I agree with rare drafting the Hub, this isnt the Pro Tour or PTQ, just like the Doran, take the tix.

Thanks guys.  This was a good learning experience for me, and hopefully useful for others.  I guess the lesson to take from it is if you're in merfolk, draft/run the cards that will let you set up your synergeous little dudes.

Thanks for doing the draft, I appreciate the walk throughs....

Alot of this has been covered, but I will still put in my $0.02.

 P2 Doran-Witches is the pick to win, but the tix for Doran justifies the pick.  The goal is to draft for free(or at least on the cheap for as long as possible), while becoming a better player, Doran fits.

P3 Summon- I consider this a huge signal.  Note a rare and common are missing(possible a foil) not much in Merfolk I would take over Summon.

P4 Harasser- Fine pickas he really holds the ground for Fairies, but note that 4 drop is getting full.  Would be alright with Twig here also(possibly even K. Greatheart if you want to jump U/W early)

P10 Spiderwig-I would take Hillcomber here, as never been too impressed with Spiderwig.

 P13 Tauntings-take Faultgrinder, at least he is playable in Elementals

*P19-Drowner-To me this is one of the critical picks, by picking Drowner you must commit more to Merfolk.  The other possibility is to go with Witches and stick U/B Fairies.  For me it could go either way, but as I prefer Fairies I would take Witches here.

P21 Nap-is fine, Net is not.

P22 T. Changling- Do not underestimate the power of Footbottom Feast.  If still U/B I might take this.

P23 M. Harbinger-Yes!, needed tutor.  you should be valuing U/w? merfolk even more now

P26 Scarblade-you will not play this, take the Wispmare for SB

*P31 Inversion-this is the other critical pick.  Right now you are probally thinking U/B/w, when you should be U/W/b.  in which case Crib Swap is better. 

P33 Hub-Take the extract, Hub is not worth the Tix, and removal(esp non color committed) is needed.

P34 D. Merrow-again you are thinking U/B/w, Harrier is the pick

P35 Nap-Harrier again

P40 I. Divers- again I would consider the feast as you only have 1 Drowner, Judge and this gets them back.  I don't know which is better, but in a control deck I would take Feast.

Great input so far.  Thanks to JX for cleaning it up some.  I agree that I probably should've built (and drafted) the more controlling version, OR been using Whelm in the aggro version.  I like the analysis.

When he's attacking with Seedguide with the Kithkin guy active, you lose nothing by blocking with Benthicore and both Merfolk.  This means even if he kills one, the Ash still dies.

I think the main problem with your draft was that thorughout you kept attempting a more aggresive stye of deck when the cards coming towards you gave you a very strong U/w/b control strategy. Most notably your choice of deeptread merrow of goldmeadow harrier (and glimmerdust nap over anohter harrier) when you already had a strong merfolk base as well as pack 17 choice of sentinels over either necksnap or the changling (who would benefit your mill win condition more...a good merfolk draft deck should rarely need to attack) Also i think you overvalue glimmerdust nap and scattering strobe and undervalue the whelms. The strobes cost too much mana, especially since it falls on your fundamental turn 4 where you deffnately dont want to leave mana open, and the glimmerdust naps as they fall off faar to easily in this format, and cost too much mana as compared to whirlpool whelms that buy you the tempo your deck needs (as you've said) . Furthermore, this is a format where agressive splashes are exceedingly necessary and as such mana fixing like the twig (and especially vivid lands)  really cant be expected to come around often so should be taken earlier in order to ensure the vital splashes for removal decks lie yours needed. Lastly, judge of currents is  exceedingly necessary for the merfolk archetype to work, as it gives merfolk the time they need to setup and puts them out of range once the engine is set up, and hence are without a doubt necessary. As long as you draft with a deck plan in mind (a variable one mind you but a plan none the less) then you shold be fine in this format.

C p1p7: Are you kidding? The Douser is possibly one of the strongest cards blue has. Always pick it if able, especially this late in the draft.

C p1p8: Fertile ground is tempting here, but I think the Sprite is the right choice, but at this point you should be hoping/praying for more Witches.


C p2p1: I think you’re sending a strong signal for green here by passing so many Fertile Grounds and the Packmaster and for red due to tarfire and the lash out, go all in on UB black and hope it pays off pack 3.

C p2p2: I think sentinels are a fine second pick.

C p2p3: Definetley, worthy of a first pick in many cases. Both pepper smoke and pestermite here should be strong signals to stay the course with UB faeries.

C p2p4: I don’t personally like the Drowner…just because I’ve never actually seen anyone win with it. It really only works with multiple judge of currents. Personally, I would have gone with the sentinel.

C p2p6: Never play zephyr net. Glimmerdust nap is the correct choice.


C p3p1: And your only white playable is the Summon. Nameless Inversion is definitely the correct choice; your deck really is missing removal.

C p1p3:  Fallowsage is still a fine pick, I think you made the right choice.


I think you did okay, Doran may have thrown your draft off a bit, but I would have taken if the same. You were indeed right, Merfolk were quite open, but someone was cutting your faeries off. I think you may need to be a little more conscientious about your curve. In the end, you just didn’t get the cards that your deck really needed.


You didn’t get enough faeries, so you couldn’t win through the air, and you didn’t get any Architect’s Wills or Streambed Architects to give your Merfolk evasion. I would have taken out the naps, and replaced them with Whirlpool Whelms. The Nap just doesn’t work in UW Merfolk, as it’s a deck that wants to buy time, so it can set up later. The Whelm works as a time walk.
