Everyone has a bad week now and then. Don't beat yourself up for it.

Opposition on a mana front would be better. I just suggested Glare based on an old snake deck i ran with splashed white for glare and congregation at dawn. Depending on your budget though i think white may be the appropriate choice because of the removal its grant. Either that or a nice way to give snakes evasion.

On another point i was absolutely shocked to see that no one with green in their decks appeared to have steely resolve.

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Armageddon Draws Nigh   15 years 37 weeks ago

Hey hey! Thanks for featuring my deck! I actually have a half-written article about it in the pot, so you might see more of it soon. It basically is designed to just draw loads of cards while committing a few snakes, hence the nickname Cantrip-Coatl. I considered a white splash, as the total lack of removal is risky, and proved to quite the weakness in the tribal format, but didn't want to push my budget mana-base too far. w.r.t. Glare of subdual, I'm pretty sure opposition's just better, and a bit less messy for my mana, and i might well give it a try.....

Hello. Great job. I did not expect this on a Wednesday. This is a great story. Thanks!

Your article title is horrible ... grow up.

  • Tribal Apocalypse: Armageddon Draws Nigh   15 years 37 weeks ago

Thanks to Shard for running the event and Heath for the sponsorship.

It was fun to see all the different tribes turn up.

Looking forward to the next event.

You should never trust Rogue's to bring a fair fight to the table :)

  • Fake Formats - Why YOU should be playing MTGO only formats   15 years 37 weeks ago

    Cool :)

  • I Don't Like Greasy Fingers on My Cards   15 years 37 weeks ago

I do find that to be true, but I am not sure if it is the anonymity or the fact that it is more accessible and just less dangerous in general. Also some people are just naturally belligerent. I had someone be very rude in the game we were playing and then get upset when I conceded and moved on. Interesting how we don't see the effects we have on others online.

Grats to all and most particular the evil Giraffe...(who takes a bomb to a gun fight? :p)

  • Fun, Spikes and the Death of Formats   15 years 37 weeks ago

Interesting article. I wrote about magic personalities myself a few weeks ago so I get where you are coming from but it sounds a little like you think that Spikes can ruin casual formats and I have to disagree. Pure spikes are a rare find outside of the PT. Casual formats imho are self-degrading in the sense that they eventually lead to being solved. Essentially being puzzles. The way to avoid this is to fix the B/R lists so that the card interactions that solve the format don't come up.

In 100cs I think the % of spikes is a bit higher than elsewhere because it is a format with so many broken 2card combos and a fleet of the best counters in the game (though admittedly 1x each). I keep hearing that the format itself isn't broken and that there is plenty of casual play left. I am not certain yet if that is true. (cf my last article) I am a Johnny/Spike though not as much of a Spike as I used to be and maybe not as Johnny as I could be. I find casual games fun but I really don't like to lose. I am not spike enough to play only tier 1 decks but I don't consider tier 1 decks to be off-limits. I do lose as a result of playing rogue builds but the wins I do get against tier 1 decks are all that much sweeter as a result. It is not beyond me to pick up a Tier 1 deck and detune it until it is rogue. My experience in 100cs is that with the the regular tourney players I can expect to face as close to tier 1 decks as that format has (top 8 decks I guess) with minor variations and when I ask for games with strangers in casual I get a variety of different strength decks. I have generally done well in casual and only mediocre to poorly against the tourney players. (I'm working on that.)

By the way, I used to write modules for Champions/Hero System tourneys years ago (early 90s). I never once ran into such a stand off. Interesting phenomenon. I guess we didn't have enough spikish players ('min-maxer' is what Id call someone abusing tactical mechanics in an RPG but it sounds a lot like spikish behavior.) Though there is nothing wrong with that, the point of RPGs isn't necessarily to win every fight. Particularly my tourneys were designed to emphasise the Role Playing aspects even to the point of encouraging some minor Life Action just to illustrate some scenes.

About the 100 life/10 card players, they seem very spikish to me in their own way. They are merely changing the settings to be to their advantage.

Was great fun, look forward to next week.

    Thanks

Full credit to the winner of the tournement with his void/helm combo working well with his rogue deck. I was personally beaten by this deck in the 1st round but must add i was the only person in the tournement to take a victory against the mentioned deck. congratulations to shards aswell for a successful tournement and i hope to participate again next week.

    Feel better soon!

  • Fake Formats - Why YOU should be playing MTGO only formats   15 years 37 weeks ago

I love the fact that somebody has finally written something about a budget 100CS deck. I remember discussing this with you at the time, and I agree that with a slightly higher budget, this deck could turn into something pretty competitive.

@Paul: If memory serves me correctly, Kharlis has won at least one PE with elves.

  • I Don't Like Greasy Fingers on My Cards   15 years 37 weeks ago

I love MTGO but it does have one major drawback. Have you ever noticed how people get more bad mannered when they're in their car? They can swear at you, flip the finger and generally behave in a way they wouldn't if you were actually face to face.

Well the same happens in MTGO. Not to the same degree perhaps but I do find their are a lot of players who give their opponents no respect. For example, conceding on turn two because they don't like their hand or disconnecting to avoid taking the loss. This never happened to me when I played paper magic.

Other than that its great, and of course there are some nice people there too!

Yeah, I did some research and as for security and what not, looks like MTGO is "the" place to shop for MTGO cards, well sets in my case. Although I have yet to compare prices offered from all the researching. Hopefully MTGO will see me, and others, as potential long time customers and offer a discount of some kind. I'll keep tabs and maybe rant about it later on.

  • State of the Program - September 18th 2009   15 years 37 weeks ago

If you're going to buy the full set, a major seller like MTGOTraders is the way to go.

As Hamtastic's charts will show you, timing is everything. For Zendikar, if you can wait until 2 weeks after the set is released online it will be a lot cheaper. By that time release events will have happened in great quantities and online card prices are really driven by that draft-fueled supply.

  • State of the Program - September 18th 2009   15 years 37 weeks ago

also there is a 10% discount on paypal orders. traders and heath in general are top notch and you will be pleased with the deal

  • State of the Program - September 18th 2009   15 years 37 weeks ago

Best thing i can tell ya is the only 100% trust worthy way when you're that new is to buy from MTGOTRADERS.com
While you might be able to shave a few dollars here or there at random places i doubt you'll find a much faster or more reliable way to get what you're looking for.

  • State of the Program - September 18th 2009   15 years 37 weeks ago

Ok, to be honest I'm looking to buy mtgo cards and or complete sets of every currently available standard set, full playsets. I want, I need to make the move from paper magic to online magic, it just suits my needs 100% so long as my internet connection remains sound.

Can any of you good people help me find the best deals so I can make a good decision. I'm looking to spend serious dollars, Zendikar I assume will be costly to get a playset. This is really important to me, and I really don't have elsewhere to go and look. This site's community is promising. Please feel free to guide me with an email message at plusua88@gmail.com

Im looking to get Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn, and M10 playsets x4 each. Help me out guys! Thanks.

    Frank

Out of interest, are you the same anonymous as above or a different anonymous?

You are quite correct: The goal is winning, by fair means or foul. You don't need Judges at a kitchen table: The rewards for cheating are as substantial as the methods to get them are morally repugnant.

  • I Don't Like Greasy Fingers on My Cards   15 years 38 weeks ago

I agree it could be fun but again this encourages people to cheat via collusion since it is easier and faster to process spoken word. Yes people do it anyway outside the program but not supporting it limits who can do it to some extent. Although I think on the flip side that they could log such conversations and monitor them for collusion.

  • State of the Program - September 18th 2009   15 years 38 weeks ago

I get the prices from Heath at www.mtgotraders.com, which I then plug into a MySQL DB and chart the prices and build the html tables and links using a custom VB.Net application that I wrote. Which is why I can now output 40 charts a week while still providing the same data as before.

One positive impact of these new charting endeavors is that I think I can now move my price calculations to Thursday which would greatly help their releancy issues that pop up from time to time. In fact I'll be trying that next week!
