really did you just say and compare chess to magic again it is not chess although we have strategy elements and pieces thats it..we have 10000s of pieces chess has what 6 it is not comparable

and yes there a tons of fantasy chess sets

  • The Art of Tribal Wars: Basic but Complicated   15 years 45 weeks ago

that guys comments are so absurd. i was drawn into it because of the fantasy flavor the artwork the abilities you sound like you want to play poker which this although is a card game it is not poker cards here have interactions that are too random it will never be poker or a sport of milionaires

now with that being said the nerd geeky part ..yeah okay well you know someone has to cut the checks for the non nerds/geeks out there dude

  • Rogue Play - Houston, We Have a Meta!   15 years 45 weeks ago

...where can one playtest for Kaleidoscope? I have a deck I'd like to fiddle around with (a slightly more metagamed GWr deck, yeah yeah, I know... :-) but I don't think I saw a single game fire in the Tournament Practice room last night while I was watching. It's certainly possible that more would go off in the casual room, but I unfortunately didn't think to look at the time. Do two-mans or 4-mans fire regularly? And how long have the Kaleidoscope tourneys taken? I may be able to play this Sunday, but it depends on when I can reasonably expect to finish...

  • The Art of Tribal Wars: Basic but Complicated   15 years 45 weeks ago

here's my response. i hate fantasy. lord of the rings sucked. elves are stupid. and i will own you any time in a 2 on 2 draft because i love this game to death.

in chess, you don't see chess players dressing up as queens or horses. you don't see people trying out their neat new 'win with only the pawns' strategy, because that would be stupid.

i compare that to people like you, if people played chess like that, it would have just as much stigma as this great game does.

  • BantHammer!   15 years 45 weeks ago

I've played about 45 matches in the format and ahve yet to see a single Ranger or Nacatl. That said, this article indicates that G/W is a bad matchup. If you think you'll see a lot of G/W aggro, don't play this deck.

  • Musings: A Look at Alara Reborn Limited: Red/Green   15 years 45 weeks ago

Blitz Hellion: unless you're at a table with a stack of raredrafters, he'll table more often than you think -- I'd seldom want him in my deck, and I say that as a bit of a fan of Lava Axes and Axe equivalents. I'd knock him down a notch from where you've got it.

Deadshot Minotaur: it's true that 3/4 is okay in this format, but a 3/4 for 5 is so far behind the curve that I'm really never happy casting him unless he's picking off a flyer. Cycling makes him better, for sure, but I find him solidly mediocre and (much like Architects of Will in the U/B article) I'm seldom surprised to see him wheel.

Gorger Wurm: I think you've got him in about the right spot, but you underestimate how often he'll eat a random Dragon Fodder goblin or Crystallized guy or whatever. You don't want to drop yourself into any real hole for it, but having six toughness is *really* relevant in this format of 5/x dorks, and having 6 power can be meaningful for getting by the occasional Sanctum Plowbeast or Jungle Weaver that otherwise shut down the Naya guys. I pick him as just a generic 5/5 for 5, but devour really matters more than you think.

Mage Slayer: I like this card a little more than most, but I think you've got it in about the right spot. You can often expect one to table, so certainly I wouldn't pick it high, but I'm glad to play one when I don't have anything better. In the big dumb Naya decks it's easy to get yourself chump blocked for a few turns while your opponent flies over for the win, and this shortens the clock measurably. A lot of my impression may be left-over from having a Gloryscale Viashino carrying the Slayer beating up my objectively-much-better Esper draft deck during my very first triple-Reborn draft, though.

Predatory Advantage: I think it's better than people are giving it credit for, but worse than you think it is. It's absolutely not a tier 2 card; I'd put it right about where you have Mage Slayer, a tier IV card that you take in the 6-8 range when the playables are starting to thin out. I would be actively unhappy if I had to take this first out of a pack.

  • Balance: Anatomy of an imbalanced card   15 years 45 weeks ago

i started in the wonderful world of magic as a kid when revised/ice age/mirage were freshly printed with thier own unique smell ,havent ripped a pack in eons wonder if they still do? anyone?

i still own alot of those cards and am just glad to be able to play with them [ tho i stopped after weatherlight and was a casual gamer found mtgo 3 years ago] before i turn this into a post of set inclusion for ftv;e . i as a player would love to be able to use those cards again [as in this is a paper goverened release] i feel that the below set cards would be included , due to thier low rl price and tho however biased it may seem here goes ;p

    land tax $7
    mind twist $5
    black vise $1.25
    regrowth $1.50
    mana vault $2.75
    strip mine $3.50
    fastbond $8
    channel $ .25
    balance $3
put that in your pipe n smoke it

i didnt want to include sol ring or maze of ith as those are a bit pricey at the 15 to 20 range.
random capitalisation of WORDS IS SO FTW

  • Musings: A Look at Alara Reborn Limited: Red/Green   15 years 45 weeks ago

Have to agree. When my opponent plays this I feel as if I just got a free time walk plus mind twist for 1. It has never won my opponent a game yet as 2/2's in the late game are generally irrevalent until youve gotten 5 or 6 turns out of it...and a card in a control deck that doesnt turn good until 5 or 6 turns after you play it seems just about terrible.

But please, go ahead and pick it early...

Unless I'm playing Mono-blue I'll always shuffle up with Ravnica lands, although from time to time I do use my 25 shiny plains all the same Time Spiral art. THe one that's all dark and spooky xD.

If I'm playing blue, though, There's one art from Kamigawa that I can't get enough of. It's got the huge castle on the waterfall. so cool :D

And my least favorite lands have to be Mirrodin. By far. Like not even close. I hate them so much.

  • Metagame Madness #2: Decks to Beat   15 years 45 weeks ago

i think the lords are really good. it makes for now anywhere from 9 to 12 ,+1/+1 and evasion tricks in the deck how can that possibly be meh?

i think deadguy ale is pikula, bw stp/vindi. and eva green is the bg version with tarmo pulse deed

  • Metagame Madness #2: Decks to Beat   15 years 45 weeks ago

I enjoyed the article, and I liked the preview.

  • Musings: A Look at Alara Reborn Limited: Red/Green   15 years 45 weeks ago

Yeah - I wrote this one and saw how short it was, so I tried to add a little more here and there, I just couldn't really find all that much to say - just the nature of these articles - some are really long Blue/Black for example, others like this one just end up being short due to a lack of all that much to say.

As for Predatory Advantage, this is one of those cards that I personally have a fondness for. I really see its value in the late game once the board has been stabilized and both players are in top deck mode - getting a 2/2 every couple of turns in addition to whatever you draw seems really good to me. In the end, probably not as good as I think it is... but still definitely playable.

Skill Borrower coming in two weeks!

I think I've got a good solution for 'what you do once you actually draw godsire'... We'll see how it works out.

  • The Art of Tribal Wars: Basic but Complicated   15 years 45 weeks ago
    lol

I resemble that D&D remark. :) and very well put. It is a disappointment to know that I share air with people who are so poisonous they spew venom as they breath.

    Another nice article Steve

    Cards in MED3
I’d love to see these although I don’t expect to see Bazaar and the Workshop until MED4. I’d like Maze of Ith, Hellfire plus the rest of the Elder Dragon’s in MED3.

    M10 RgDW
I think we are going to see a lot of Ball Lightning, Bolt / Braid decks in standard soon, I’m going to try a Polymorph / Darksteel Colossus deck, should be fun.

Five Casual-ish Cards to Build Around
I got some Skill Borrower’s ages ago but never got round to finding them a good home, the Salvage Titans could be good in EXT but again I never made the deck for them.
I might try to make some decks with them now and Aven Mimeomancer and Ward of Bones had a few good deck ideas for them. I’ll see which one you do your next article on, would be interesting to see how different our decks end up.

    What are Your Favorite Lands?
Mine are foils I always try to play foil lands unless I’m using Classic duals there’s no chance I’m buying them in foil lol.

I might get some of the new promo ones I like the Islands and Plains, but as I’m not in the US I’m going to have to fork out cash for them : (

  • Explorations #31 - Nine Different Things   15 years 45 weeks ago

Skill borrower and ward of bones are by far the two most interesting for me. Getting skill borrower to activate godsire's ability would be awesome, but that of course present the challenge of just what you do once you actually draw godsire. Would probably need a lot of top and ponder effects. Ward of bones seems cool to me due to the challenge of getting it out with little board presence and fast enough to make a difference.

Look forward to seeing what you do!

same as eddie112, hit me up i have a mic.

and thanks alot for the shoutout, it's always nice to have an article you worked hard on recognised.

Did you try Manamorphose for your Manaplasm deck? you get a free +2/+2 and you still keep the mana to do somethng else...

Here's to all those people who've proudly played D&D for 30 years. Who play for fun. Who play fringe formats for fun.
Without you, Magic would just be a big pile of this jerk.

If you search eBay for "apac lands" you'll find the Player Rewards Plains occasionally. You want the RED set. They're not cheap though, right now I see the pack of five lands going for $30. You can get them used for $15 or so.

Here's what you want at Starcity..

  • Metagame Madness #2: Decks to Beat   15 years 45 weeks ago

Hey ruckus, good job. I like the layout and i like that you made your decks very easy to copy paste as txt files to eaisly load them into modo. In the future though how about some red dots and blue dots to show top 8's and finals apearences? It's great to have all the raw data from a weekend but its also nice to see what did well during the weekend.

    Also just some archtype questeons.
Is eva green the B/G Stalker/Goyf featuring pulse?
do you rember what colors the dreadstill deck were? Ie did it play w, b, r, or mono u with domain for EE?
Is dead guy bw agro ie pale ale?

    cee ya in game

  • Explorations #31 - Nine Different Things   15 years 45 weeks ago

    1) Agreed on all points. It's fun and addicting, but it isn't going to replace anything else. Also, you can currently eBay the Garruk promo for more than you paid to download the game!

    5) Yes, it is unfortunate that the strategy has CHANGED. But CHANGE isn't always bad. While I mourn the loss of some really great plays, I embrace the fact that combat makes a little more sense. From a flavor perspective, it has always seemed a little off to me that Mogg Fanatic is taking out two guys (which I believe is the example they used in the announcement). Since Wizards is obviously tailoring many of its recent decisions towards new players, it should be no surprise that this happens, and I'm ready for it.

    7) Unhinged lands are definitely sweet. However, I've taken a recent liking to Tempest and Mirage lands. Mirage Mountains? Yes please.

    8) Is the Player Rewards Plains art available in paper?

  • Explorations #31 - Nine Different Things   15 years 45 weeks ago

Awesome review of DOTP like how you gave the casual players feel which showed off some of it's flaws. Wall of Bone deck man I've already experienced a deck like that so not fun at all when you can't draw your artifact destruction, and even if you do there playing Academy Ruins, so you get a one turn stop.

  • Musings: A Look at Alara Reborn Limited: Red/Green   15 years 45 weeks ago

Good article it seemed short, but the ARB green/red only cards are short. I'm kind of sick of cascade, but there no doubt it's can be a real handful. I say Predatory Advantage is fine. but at best it's a I win more more card (if your winning) it would work better in a control deck... but green/red doesn't really do control.

  • Explorations #31 - Nine Different Things   15 years 45 weeks ago

No solid word yet on previous points being awarded unfortuntaely. Hopefully we'll hear something soon, although I wouldn't hold your breath.
