well saturday at 3pm est might cut into the finals of my tribal event, not that i would mind but some of my players could be very interested in this, maybe 4pm on saturday would be great. I would play too as long as i had a bit of wind down between hosting an playing. Another reason i suggest 4 instead of 3.

I believe you are correct. It is banned in highlander and not 100cs. When I was looking at what cards needed to be to avoid creating a degenerate format, I used Tarmotog’s article http://puremtgo.com/articles/one-double-o-27-exodus-and-no-bans on ban lists and I simply didn’t double check it, my apologies.

For the time being, I’m going to leave Worldgorger Dragon on the banned list for Blackblade singleton. It can create a number of turn 2 combos with Entomb and Animate Dead type effects. Especially since you can play win conditions (such as Murderous Redcap) as lands in order to pull off the combo without an instant speed kill card. One of the main reasons for this format is to allow players to play longer games that are based around skill based decisions and not luck-of-the-draw based losses, and a turn 2 combo could disrupt that reason.

I may reconsider taking it off the banned list after I’ve run a couple of tournaments and have a better feel for the metagame.

Looks good, 100 cs variation is always up my alley

  • Introducing Blackblade Singleton   15 years 24 weeks ago

I don't believe Worldgorger Dragon is banned in 100CS as I have built several decks trying to get it to work in the format and I don't recall seeing it become banned any time recently.

I love the avatar, welcome to Pure. :) An interesting look at a format I probably will never play (Not being one to open new accounts or buy stuff.) I imagine this would be useful for new players. If I hear anyone asking about this format Ill tell them about your article.

  • Flying Hippos - Chrismahanukwanzakah - Part 2   15 years 24 weeks ago

I really wanted to run it, but the only artifacts I really wanted to run were Petal and Explosives (And in the end I didn't even run explosives) and they aren't good Tinker targets

That might change when Will comes out, which I assume will pump up storm decks and so Chalice for 0 and Null Rod might be better options.

But then, Oath itself changes a lot when you have Will anyway.

I'll keep an eye on that foreshadowing, thanks for the feedback.

Not sure why the creatures are under the lands. Maybe it's a quirk of the replay mode, or something got changed on one of my settings screens?

  • MTGO Replays: San Juan PTQ January 2nd, 2010   15 years 24 weeks ago

You know, that's a great idea. I was noticing that youtube was reducing the quality of a video I already reduced the quality on. Makes youtube annotations a better option

  • MTGO Replays: San Juan PTQ January 2nd, 2010   15 years 24 weeks ago

You should use YouTube's annotations next time. They will be easier to match the flow of the game, they are easier to read, and you can point out subtler things that might be easily missed, such as mulligans.

  • Introducing Blackblade Singleton   15 years 24 weeks ago

This is an interesting idea and I just checked Blackblade avatar's price and saw that it only costs $0,15. I will think about a few deck ideas in the coming days and I'll let you know my findings. Right now all I can say is that it sounds interesting. You can expect a reply from me here in a few days.

If you are interested in playing in my tournament, let me know which of the following times you can make/can't make.

I have a regular full-time job, so I have to limit the times when I can run the tournament somewhat.

    1. Saturday 3 pm EST
    2. Saturday 6 pm EST
    3. Sunday 3 pm EST
    4. Sunday 6 pm EST
    5. Monday 7 pm EST
    6. Tuesday 7 pm EST

I really like the sound of this format, seems well thought out, interesting to play and relatively budget friendly (no expensive mana bases). Hope you get a good turn out for your tournaments.

  • Statistically Speaking: Zendikar’s Red Commons   15 years 24 weeks ago

I think these articles are readable and enjoyable. Because I don't draft that often, I can always appreciate extra information from what is going on in Limited. I may not base my ratings of cards or build decks based on the results of these studis, but i do appreciate being given the chance to evaluate these cards in this light. Thank you.

Usually I sac the Expanse on my opponent's end step.

However, if I feel I might forget (something else if vying for my attention), I will crack immediately.

Or, if I have a deck that is slow and am afraid that time could become an issue, I will crack immediately and F6 the rest of my turn and then my opponent's turn in order to minimize clock usage. That has only happened to me once, but I won a match with 4 seconds left on my clock and every moment helped.

Thanks for the shoutout, Pete! As FierceTable said, though, there's always room for more good Limited content.

William's link suggests that there is more EV (expected value) in representing yourself as a bad player (cracking in your main phase) than there is in disguising your color for a turn.

I tend to do the classically "correct" thing and wait. Besides Pete's points, I think you can create different but equally-valid bluffing opportunities by showing yourself to be a good player. I'd rather set up "good player" bluffs than hope that cracking an expanse early sets up bad-player misdirection.

That being said, I have forgotten to crack those damn panoramas often enough that I imagine the strongest case for cracking early is not the bad-player-bluff opportunity, but the insurance that you will not screw up and forget to crack it by waiting for the "correct" time.

I would wager that forgetting to crack at the End Step has had orders of magnitude more impact on the outcome of games involving Terramorphic Expanse and panoramas than bad-player bluffs or color disguising ever has.

I look forward to William's article...

"2 man queues are not worth it for the EV right now with the prize pack being worth about 2.6"

Er, huh? Zen packs are worth about 3.6 now, right? Not as good as Pauper 2-man, which pays M10, but still OK. If you play twice and break even, you're -0.4. If you win 4 times and lose once, as you've suggested, you're +4.4.

    What am I missing?

  • Flying Hippos - Chrismahanukwanzakah - Part 2   15 years 24 weeks ago

1, I just finished 2 m10 drafts with mixed results and punting games away. 2, Puppy Choking on a nail is awesome lol.

  • Losing on Turn One - in Limited   15 years 24 weeks ago

Maybe, and I look forward to reading the article, but I have qualms. The main one is that defining players as "good" or "bad" works fine for a Boolean analysis, but I think you have to look at good-to-bad as a continum or spectrum, with every player sitting somewhere in between. I also think you need to represent the effectiveness of the bluff - some bluffs are great, and some are transparent.

In short, I think you get far less value out of a bad bluff than out of not bluffing.

I could agree that blowing the Expanse can be a good short-term bluff in the rare situation where you have all your main colors in sufficient amounts, and can fetch your splash land. However, if someone plays a Expanse into Mountain on turn one, then starts playing out UW fliers, I'm already thinking about Earthquake and/or Fireball by turn five. That may negate any value the bluff may have had in the first couple turns.

I'll look for the article before I say anything more.

whoops - you are right. Unlikely, but not impossible.

  • Casual Diversions #3: Hibernation's End   15 years 24 weeks ago

I like Kamahl's Summons, but I rarely hold on to that many creature cards. I think Kamahl's Summons is like Words fo Wilding in that it is a fun card that belongs in other decks. Propagate the bears to the end of the earth :)

As for Savage Twister, I think any creature control is Tribal is permissible. Why wouldn't decks run Wrath of God or Damnation? Fireball often acts as Creature control, but I won't hesitate to use it direct to the dome if it will win me the game. I have on more than one occassion use Savage Twister for 1 to clear out a bunch of Wizards and then attacked with my bears for a whupping.

I can say that I have all different types of decks. Some days I feel like a Spike, others a Johnny, and occassionally a Timmy. My mood directs what I play as much as anything, but even when I play a deck derived more for enjoyment than a tournament scene, I still will try to win.

As for Changelings, when V3 first came out, it did not count Changelings for Tribal legality. I don't when this changed, but this Bears deck does indeed get past MTGO's Tribal filter and the deck is legal.

I definitely will hit on some of my more competitive Tribal decks in time (such as Faeries & Merfolk), but most of my spikish tendencies have me playing Pauper right now.

  • Infinite Lessons: Vampires around the block - Part 1   15 years 24 weeks ago

I like the idea of playing block constructed as an entry point - This allows you to focus on one format - then as the time passes you will have a decent card pool to move to standard as the old block rotates out.

  • Losing on Turn One - in Limited   15 years 24 weeks ago

On your 'teaser' sentence you say 'there's currently no first turn win in Limited'. In fact there is (albeit an extraordinarily convoluted setup in Zendikar draft). If you get 3 or more Archive Traps you can win after only one turn (your opponent goes first with fetchland, activate, you throw 3 traps at them, they lose before your second turn).
