I did take a closer look at what I wrote, and yes,it seemed that I did in fact rant about someone whom I have some issues with.I apoligize to the readers who took time to read and comment on this. I'll be sure to write so
ethi g worthwhile next time.ps,it was pretty late and night and I was digging for some sort of filler,I admit it.
Like Joel posted, the current Kodama's lists are far different than the one you posted. Popular Tortured Existence builds run several ways. They have an green/black aggro madness shell with aggressive cards like Wild Mongrel, Putrid Leech, Basking Rootwalla with Tortured Existence and Grave Scrabbler as an afterthought. There are also Black/Blue Control shells with eight Merfolk Looters that abuse madness. There is also the complete combo route that decks itself with Dredge and uses Battlefield Scrounger and Auramancer to prevent losing by decking and to recur Tortured Existence. None of these three lists are really like the one you posted.
First article of 100 C Singleton and I loved it. Seems like an interesting concept. I was getting bored of casual and I dont have too much money to draft constantly nor am I able to go infinite all the time.
Seems fun. I may give it a try soon.
Have you ever met that obnoxious fat kid at your local MTGO website that thinks he is better than everyone else there? That one person that annoys everyone there just to get attention, and thinks he's so awesome because writes a long article with nothing but filler that would best fit in a single paragraph? I hear that guy has "hundred (hundreds?) of parents" or "hundred (hundreds?) of money", but I'm not sure which.
"Ranting aside, if you ever had the misfortune to ever having to interact with that kid, I am sorry you had to have gone through that horrible experience."
There are ironies within ironies culminating in this sentence. Some points. 1) the "Fat" kid probably doesn't like to be picked on for being overweight any more than you want to hear how he likes Yu Gi Oh over magic. (Ironic?) 2) You end the rant with an aside and then continue it. (even more ironic?). 3) What is so bad about dealing with someone you clearly dislike because of their image? (shallow much?) Certainly doesn't match up to being punched in the face or being stolen from or any number of other truly "horrible" things that could happen while you are at a magic store. I am not saying you were wrong to be annoyed but it seems petty to bring it here. Though you at least didn't name the pest.
Some insight perhaps: The kid being overweight and having clear physical and emotional problems needs to be drawn in some how and turned into an ally. Ignoring the trolling attempts and working on making such a person into a potential ally could be as simple as asking if they wish to trade or admiring the Shiny Faeries deck they made. (You might even gain some knowledge about what magic strategy they are aware of.) I'm just saying that the alternative you went with is not a gain for you or that kid.
Re: Jedi Mind Tricks. That is all they are. Just tricks. Once you are aware of them they should be ineffective against you if you have any mental discipline. I am no pro but I have played many, some of whom attempted them and if they won it was through their skill at playing the cards and perhaps reading my plays (yes even with a good cover you will transmit information, such as how you tap lands etc) not their attempts to distract me from important events in the game.
In the specifics of the match you mentioned with Joe vs Tom, Tom goofed. Yes Joe set him up, but Tom walked in of his own volition. And his biggest mistake was a common one in paper. He assumed Priority without confirming. The good players will ask "Are you done with your turn?" We don't see this sort of thing online because no matter what is said the game state waits on the active player or player with priority. In the same sense it is impossible to have disagreements with reality online because reality is taken care of for you. All you can do is curse the UI when it hoses you. (It will. Trust me.)
Lastly John I have some advice for you. Clearly you have something to share with us and I think you should but you wasted your space and our time ranting about an individual whom if you truly dislike him should be as significant as rain to your day. I think you should consider your next article in the light how not to make yourself seem arrogant, young and hateful. Thank you for sharing though.
In general 40% is a good average for any deck but I find I tend to go a slight be light (35-38) to fit in some fixing that otherwise wouldn't make the cut.
What turn did that first deck mill you on? Maybe 8? And that's with at least two "do go" turns in there?
Soul's Majesty is currently 0.12 on this website. You absolutely had to play Drumhunter over it? Maybe Drumhunter was better was anyway. But you said it was because you didn't own any. Just buy the card. Or if orders have to be $5 for PayPal then buy $20 of bot credits and spend $0.48 of it.
Rosheen Meanderer would be a good acceleration card for your deck. And because she's good in only your deck, she costs 10 cents!
Can you point the suboptimal parts of thunder (but not codamma) or Tortured Existence list, because I think that some of those two decks will be the star in my next article? I always like to hear second opinon :)
This was a fantastic article that goes over the basic Teachings builds and briskly walks you through the matchups. Like other players have stated, the WW and Goblins deck lists are outdated. I would also add that the Thunder list is outdated and Tortured Existence list is suboptimal as well. Outdated meaning the decklist is at least thirty cards off and suboptimal meaning around 10-20 cards off. In my own testing, thunder is 7-1 in matches against Amar's version of UBw Teachings. I look forward to reading more great articles from you.
So what makes you think you're not annoying? Are you without flaws ,then i am to assume you have never acted in such a manner and possess the paramount ideals which all mtg players should try to attain? And what of his parents buying foil is that something we should hold against him loving parents? I sure wish my parents would buy me foils.while yes there are many instances of the annoying mtg player, they could easily be skinny, medium, bodybuilder, small and/or poor. Please methinks it is all hyperbole on your behalf. what i got from your article is that fat ,spoiled kids should not be playing magic only "normal" people are allowed?
'
As I mentioned I know :) But the deck that I posted have 2-3 top 8, so it isn't that bad :) It's just outdated. If I write another similar article about pauper deck I will try to past only decks from the last month or so.
Yeah your goblin build is extremely off, but thats already been said. Just thought I'd mention it again as I play the deck and I'd be embarassed if someone picked up that list and played it.
Thanks for the article, and nice job of outlining some of the things that make the format so much fun.
I don't think it's likely that Wizards would ever setup the wager feature. It smacks too much of gambling (i.e. it is obviously gambling) and would require coding work. I don't think they have a lot of flexibility in either area.
The "classic pack" idea would be nice. But I also doubt they will do that. People have been saying for years that they want a generic pack instead of specific prize packs, and Wizards has always ignored those voices. If they started letting us choose our prize packs, people would probably buy less packs from the store. My guess is that they'd come out ahead through better tournament participation if the prize packs allowed us some options, but maybe I'm just stupid.
One way or another, they definitely need to stop paying out in classic packs that hardly anybody wants. My suggestion is that they pay out in Master's Edition 2/3 forever. Dual lands will never go out of style. They would need to put up ME draft queues occasionally to make this worthwhile, of course.
Whatever they do, I hope we don't get stuck with Exodus (and more Tempest/Stronghold) prizes when that comes out. The interest in that set will be fleeting, and demand for Tempest/Stronghold will only continue to drop. Even Urza's block doesn't fill me with confidence, because while the sets will be popular initially, a lot of people will quickly accumulate the broken/restricted staples and move on. That's why ME2/3 are better prizes: dual lands are in high demand and always will be. Apart from that, having more duals out there will make both Classic and 100 Card healthier and more accessible.
One more thing: Nix Pax drafts hurt 100CS. It further reduces the demand for classic block packs.
The best way to win in paper events is just to keep the best attitude you possibly can, don't listen to anyone else and focus on the game. When I play in paper events, I make sure I announce everything that is happening, even what the opponent is doing, that way I know there is no way something can "sneak" onto the game table and that generally keeps everyone on their toes. They don't know my poker face if I'm always talking and always having a good time its hard for other people to play the "game above the game" tricks with you. at least thats what helps me.
Devoted druid isn't absurd with arcbound overseer.
lol you mean Hammy? (I kid I kid)
Don't let these comments get to you. I hate fat kids too.

I just want to thank you fot the enjoyable article. Every week I check for this, and I'm never disappointed. Keep up the good work!

I talk exclusively about lands in part 2. The short answer is that the top decks typically run between 37 to 44 lands depending on mana curve.
Sorry for the double post, wrong link. This is it:

He probably meant this list:

Very different indeed.
Please edit the article adding the Blink matchup if possible.

Moar Pauper 100cs please

I'll keep that in mind in the future.
The free pauper events have way lower competition. You can't really rely on top 8s from those.
As I mentioned I know :) But the deck that I posted have 2-3 top 8, so it isn't that bad :) It's just outdated. If I write another similar article about pauper deck I will try to past only decks from the last month or so.
Btw by off I mean the list is probably 25 or so cards different than the actual builds. So yeah, huge difference.
