I enjoy playing Commander. Most of the people are nice, but I have ran across some not so nice players. One guy defeated another player and was close to defeating another player who had 10 life. I still had 37 life. I played Kaervek the Merciless. The guy at 10 life played some spells and I directed Kaervek's damage at the aggressive player so I could finish them both off. He got angry, called the game gay and disconnected. Overall, it's a great format and I recommend it to all players. It does remind me of playing with starter packs.

I know what you mean by being on a budget. When i had my first commander deck it was based on Teneb, The Harvester but with no real theme or good cards. lol. I just slowly bought 3-5 cards here or there whenever i had spare cash or found a good deal. eventualy youre deck can be amazing if you just slowly buy and edit the deck as you go along. and maga is one evil commander.

  • Reporting for duty, Sir!   15 years 42 weeks ago

I'm also a budget player who'd like to play commander. My biggest piece of advice to my fellows... watch out. Commander games can be full of incredibly degenerate decks. You can never tell beforehand whether the guy who sits across from you will have $200 of MED duals. Twice I've played in a game where things were going fine, people were playing spells, everybody looks like they're having fun. Then (name removed to protect the guilty) pops off and plays time stretch 3 times in a row! the rest of us sit there for six turns while he/she filters her dec for win conditions and complains that we should all just concede because the games over. Also, other players may give you serious crap if you bring a substandard dec into a game, especially if you are no help in beating (name removed guy).

  • Semi-Standard and the No-Qualification Invasion Event   15 years 42 weeks ago

I can easily find stores selling IPA at that price, but I can't find anyone *buying* IPA at that price. With the amount given out from the open event, I can see IPA dropping down to $12 for a draft set.

The only thing driving the price is the scarcity, as you've mentioned above, the cards are largely worthless. Armadillo Cloak was a recent promo and Terminate is in Alara Reborn.

  • Pauper to the People- Look, up in the Sky!   15 years 42 weeks ago

I'm confused how it would be misinterpreted as mindless praise... how is that? Spike obviously hasn't fully decided either way whether or not this deck is viable long term, and neither has the pauper community. That was the purpose of the article...
    BTW Great article Spike.
You want my two cents? I don't think it will last long in the limelight, but it's nice to see a shifting meta for once in a while.

  • Pauper to the People- Look, up in the Sky!   15 years 42 weeks ago

Hey. Vie me your MTGO adress. WE'll duke it out, kk? See how bad this deck is, won't we?

Psh, at least TRY it before you diss the single most respected player in the PDC. Spike is one of the main reasons I play pauper too, though I still don't even have his user address xD

  • Pauper to the People- Look, up in the Sky!   15 years 42 weeks ago

not trying to sound harsh here (does that sound familiar?) BUT... beckon apparition? Common Alex... Nuf said.. since when did we start maindecking sideboard cards? Mister Competetive play... hardly here my friend. Castigate? Did Distress rotate out or what? Since when did Castigate become playable? Oh yeah... when Nightsky Mimic did... What happened to T4 my friend? Castigate is nice... just not in pauper. I want to rant on and on about this POS deck but then again, it might be misinterepted as mindless praise for a mindless moron. I think this deck is crap and I won't even give it the time of day to see if it's competetive or not... does that sound familiar? Maybe you can make up for it with another mindless story about your childhood....

If you click on the link to the discussion thread, I put all of the decklists in the first post. Also, remember that new accounts still also get the avatar pack (AFAIK), so they'll be getting additional lands from that.

I think these give you the most bang for your buck
    sensei's divining top -every deck
upheaval -any deck with blue (was fixed with the most recent update)
    coalition relic -any control deck
    ravages/geddon

so any idea on what the break down on the 300 cards new accounts get are? i mean are these all M10 cards our random junk from throughout the sets?

  • State of the Program - July 31st 2009   15 years 42 weeks ago

Man i love to cycle, i love it so much in fact that i ride one to and from work every day. It's only 3 miles each way but nothing helps wake you up at 330 am like a nice brisk bike ride. As for swimming and running, meh to both. i enjoy swimming but running is so boring and jarring on the knees. Gj on the triatholon.

Can i make a request? Some time before med 3 can we get a price history on the 5 allied duals from med 2? Would really help me try to figure out when the best time to acquire the new 20 would be.

  • A very Explosive report   15 years 42 weeks ago

well i have to say gj on the top 8 and gj on a great report even if your daughter is stealing some of the attention:). Im not such a big fan of the deck though, i dunno i just cant stand counter top, probably cause it is a slower game then i am used to playing. I enjoy slow control but there is so much book keeping when playing with a top.

  • Explorations #34 - Casual Deck Doctor: Barbed Wire Fence   15 years 43 weeks ago

One thing you don't mention is that Wargate is great for searching out land. And I love playing decks that do this well. Plus late game it brings the other pieces.

  • Explorations #34 - Casual Deck Doctor: Barbed Wire Fence   15 years 43 weeks ago
    huh

Seems like youd get post hosed at least 1 in 3...9 basics in the deck means that you are going to get mulliganed a bit it seems to me. But good with that.

  • Getting The Mana Right in Alara Block Sealed Deck, Part 1   15 years 43 weeks ago

I am also notriously bad a multi-color sealed/draft environments. IPA just about destroyed all my conficence in drafting back when it debuted. I could never get the mana right and always lost. I've finally (mostly) go the hang of ACR block. I actually believe it's singificantly better since there is so much fixing available.

    Nice article.

  • Explorations #34 - Casual Deck Doctor: Barbed Wire Fence   15 years 43 weeks ago

    Mana Sources (29)
    4x Fieldmist Borderpost
    4x Firewild Borderpost
    2x Mistvein Borderpost
    2x Veinfire Borderpost
    4x Wildfield Borderpost
    2x Obelisk of Naya
    2x Birds of Paradise
    4x Forest
    5x Mountain

    Creatures (11)
    4x Rhox War Monk
    3x Boggart Ram-Gang
    4x Bloodbraid Elf

    Burn (13)
    4x Manabarbs
    4x Lightning Bolts
    2x Shard Volley
    1x Volcanic Fallout
    2x Banefire

    Support (8)
    4x Oblivion Ring
    2x Martial Coup
    2x Ponder

I'm having okay success with this. I've died twice to discard and it wasn't close. I had one awesome game versus Underworld Dreams where all of our damage was "self inflicted". That one random Volcanic Fallout should be a 3rd Martial Coup. Then cut a land to get the deck back to 60 cards. I need 4 Birds because they are so much better than the borderposts. The Rhox and the Bloodbraid Elf are so good!

Turn 1: borderpost (100% it seems)
Turn 2: borderpost or Birds, leave bolt mana open
Turn 3: play a land, make a 3 drop, or else play another borderpost
Turn 4/5: better play multiple spells this turn, hopefully Manabarbs
Turn 8: topdeck an X spell

    Hi there

Thanks for the article... it's the one I look forward to most in the week.

Just wondered what happened to chart that show's the tix values of different draft sets. Don't know how much others use it, but I do consider that when deciding which set to draft... and especially relevant in the short term with changes coming (eg. M10 coming in, and LLM/SSE going out next).

    Cheers for all your work!!

  • Magic Etiquette: Casual Play   15 years 43 weeks ago

From the point of veiw of a tournament player.

Most of my games in an event setting boil down to these comments.

    gl there sir.

    gg

    gl in the next round/draft/event

gj on making the top 8/4/finals/money (when i know that i and my opponent are locked)

Being that i play mostly classic i have come do know ( as much as you can know a screen name) a large portion of the player base. The more comfortable i am with the player in question the more comments come down, such as a little playful trash talking or expressing sorrow at a truely bad beat on mine or there part.

Rarely do i "go off" on some one, but it does happen, ussaly when they are being a poor sport, or when the pressure of continual bad beats keep coming my way in the same tournament.

lastly i say gg every time unless i am furious. then i just concede and turn the computer off. Some people take this the wrong way, but i never mean harm by it, even if your mana screwed or mana hosed shouldnt the expereince be worth something positive?

My personal behavior as mostly a tournie player. This changes completely with most of my clan, especially if we are testing.

  • State of the Program - July 31st 2009   15 years 43 weeks ago

I've read that they were giving 150 basic lands, so 30 of each type. Seems a good enough amount.

  • State of the Program - July 31st 2009   15 years 43 weeks ago

I'm slightly vexed by this change as i just joined a month or so ago in anticipation of the release of M10 online. I wish i would have known that they were going to change this up and provide commons and a pack of M10 to begin playing with earlier this month so i could have waited to sign up. Also...getting only 15 basis lands is kinda sucky as that means you have to buy lands if you plan on running a mono colored deck. Stupid and cheap of me to say, i know, but a small annoyance none-the-less for a beginning MTGO player. Oh well, i guess WotC doesn't have to share everything with their customers now do they?
