Yes, it's a habit/standard I picked up from poker hand discussions, where Hero and Villain are used as a generic terms, allowing people to cleanly discuss a hand without having to look up, use, or differentiate between usernames. Particularly useful as a third-party observer, where other readers don't have to remember that IaLwAyShAvEiT82 is the player whose cards we can see, and DaNutCracka is the opponent.
I think it's partly used to allow for gender-neutral hand discussions, but I end up using "he" a bunch each column anyway. My apologies to any female drafters I face (maybe I'll start asking), but I can't abide by "he or she" crap, and I'm just playing the odds...
How come you always seem to stumble upon Villain in the drafts? Or am I just confusing your series with other articles that managed to come against him in a draft or event?
I missed the article where the anonymous user made all those comments. I just made this account to support your backlash against him. Keep up the good work with your articles. I enjoy all of them.
You can't own me. Couldn't own me. Not if your deck was the *BEST* tech ever, and I build my deck from the left over cards they printed 4 of in Fallen Empires. Hand of Justice and Farrel's Mantle on a Sengir Vampire ftw. (That was Johhny Removal and Timmy Fat building all in a 2 card combo, in FFA it was mega fun).
Why can't you own me?
Because I am not for sale. Sure I play to win. Do it a lot. Quite enjoy winning. But I don't base my sense of personhood on the game. No more do I base it on the kind of hat I wear (though I wish I though of that, and do become quite the pirate after a keg full of beer, aaarrrghh my hearties). Nor do I base my sense of personhood on how many games I win. I base it on how much fun I have, and on good days, how much fun I help others have.
I built a Lurghoyf tribal deck, ftw, and played it in 2hg for a couple of weeks - it was mega fun. I used lots of cycling creatures/lands etc. to make sure my g/y was full by the time I dropped the relevant */* fat. Was it tier 1? no. Was it funny as all hell, and even my opponents enjoyed it win or lose? yes.
I have built Bear Tribal (inspired by MrTrashmatic's bear tribal) for the same reason. Because Magic is fun.
I don't expect you do understand this anonymous hater, but then the point really is, I don't need you to. You don't get the beauty of putting a photo of yourself wearing a hat that has no right to ever see the light of day, and broadcasting it to millions? Well that is okay. The hat doesn't get you.
I think with the new list the matchup gets a little worse against any deck with wasteland (the 4 wasteland and 3+ stifle package is not prevalent, for good reason) AND makes Moons out of all-in red must-counters where they previously weren't. The modification takes the elves matchup from 'they have a bye' to 'favorable' that I've seen...but Elves is getting largely hated out at this point and I think has returned to Necrospike era viability.
Also I love that prolepsis taking down tournaments with countertop improves the metagame for me :)
Ah OK I see, I guess I just assumed everyone knew the cards, my mistake. I am sure that once he sees that its 1G to basic landcycle the Bounty, it will make more sense to him.
Thanks a lot for doing this column. I believe that this is by far the best limited analysis I have ever read. You review many options, consider much, and aren't afraid to admit your mistakes. It's highly informative and entertaining.
Bummer on the time difference perhaps some day there will be a EU pdcmagic member who'll is EU and will run such an event. Dude I love the outfit but which is it Sith lord, or Jedi?
This happened because I wrote so many about Season II which all happened in a month. The site only publishes my articles once a week to make sure there is room for the other writers. Therefore, they sat in the queue. Now that the series is complete, I can provide just glimpses into my Bandwagon experience or group recaps of multiple events to shorten the time between the event and the article being published. Thank you for your comment.
Not sure what you meant by "a means to a forest in your hand"? Basically if he didn't draw a forest he would have literally no plays. He needed to get a forest in the first 3 turns or so, or draw into something playable or he just sits and loses. He didn't have access to a forest, that was the problem with the hand.
Again , i enjoyed reading your draft caps, and i second the move where he had the dragon out and you had the tapper and a win on the table..
thanks for the info. :p

by Villain he just means a generic unnamed opponent used as a pseudonym to avoid upsetting anyone in the game?
All these pirates are stinkin up the place

Exactly. Beauty is in the Arrrr! of the beholder.

... have a brain fart. My bad. Nothing to see here. Carry on.
Regardless of what it actually is it will always be a pirate hat in my eyes. Yarrr!
One of these days I'm going to do a post confessing that it isn't actually a pirate hat, but not today. Fun podcast, glad to earn a mention.
turned Jedi knight. Obi Wan Vader?
Also cool article and Happy Birthday!

I will work on getting the names up for those with iphones and work computers.

The image on screen has the basic landcycling cost at 1, when it should show 1G. This may be the source of the above confusion.

Sith or Jedi? Hmm... The color of my lightsaber should actually help you determine it (let me know if it's still unclear).
LE
He probably didn't realize that Sylvan Bounty's cycling cost requires a forest. I didn't remember at first either..
Moonkhan, do you mean like, here's 5 games of Zoo Vs Mer, that sort of thing? Or did you mean something else?
