agreed, excellent videos. i'll agree with your thought about mistapping when you cast foresee. i would've left the forest untapped and risked a burn, but i would've trusted your deck to give you an elder you would've been able to cast with the floating colorless.

I have no idea how to do the text shortcut like Gadot mentioned (auto saving hello and good game to be clickable) I didn't even know that it existed!
Anyone can teach me how? Would be an awesome tool, kinda reminds me of MWS when I read the comments :-)

I was basically going to say the same thing as the first poster, just simpler : Ranger sucks.
if I had made the deck i probably wouldve splashed blue for sift and council, card drawing wins games, 1 land and ranger out. Pretty nice build though overall, and congratulations.

I really like the first 2 decks, well made. Good article.

The definition of "casual" is a topic for about five more articles. There are many people who don't consider counterspells or land destruction "casual." However, your opponent is at fault, not you.

If your opponent does not want to face countermagic, it is on them to start their own match with "no counterspells" in the comments field.

Personally I think it's rude to bring a tournament-quality deck into a casual standard or extended match, but I think it's wrong to call certain strategies "not casual." Even then, define "tournament-quality deck." You are going to get different answers from different people. However, if you are running a definable tournament archetype that is close in construction to what you would find in a deck from the latest tournament, it shouldn't be in casual.

Beyond that, picky players who don't want to face certain types of spells need to advertise in games they have started themselves, not lol and concede when they see something they don't like.

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

Some people like myself enjoy playing against a good counter deck IF we know it is coming. It can be rather jarring to expect a non-counter environment and get hit with hard counters. On the other hand there is absolutely nothing wrong or un-casual about playing a counter deck as long as you are clear about it.

On the other hand some people will auto-concede if they see one Mana Leak or Remand. They feel that the environment is too hard with counters. But the same people also dislike playing against land destruction, discard and even mass creature destruction. I have done this myself but not for that reason. When I know that the play will cost me the game I say "Good Game" and concede.

It is a shame the person called you out, but at least they did tell you what they were thinking, even if it was snide. I think it is safe to say that warning a player beforehand that you are running a denial strategy of some kind should be sufficient. On the other hand that does spoil some of the strategy of playing a denial deck.

It all really depends on how advanced a player you are facing. Some will just automatically assume you are evil if you run islands. I'd ignore that and just have fun.

is there, like, an unwritten rule that counterspells are banned from the casual room? someone quit on me after calling me out for having countermagic. :/ i was testing a deck i just built... then he went "counterspells on casual? lol" and then conceded.

I don't need you to chat, I don't need you to use a keyboard, but, you can right click and say "Hello and good luck," and you can right click and say, "Good game." I think of those two gestures as bowing before and after a martial arts bout, and you can make those comments without keyboard, so why not? Just acknowledge that your opponent is a human...

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

Sorry to nit-pick here, but you must be thinking of correlate or correlation. While corollary is fairly similar in meaning to the two words, correllary is just a corruption of its spelling, not a real word. I'm not sure why a spell-checker would miss it, but if you look in the spell checker for the comments it actually does pick up that the word is misspelled.

Copy-pasting the articles into Microsoft Word would probably be the fastest way I can think of to spell check it, though admittedly you run into the irritation of having anything unique to Magic unrecognizable.

Beyond that I can offer a limited amount of free time to actually read some articles over and scan for simple mistakes if it would help.

Interesting idea...though it might get confusing. I am fairly certain as hard as it is for me to put together a pile for Kaleidoscope Extended, Classic would make it totally out of my reach but that is really beside the point right?

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

No. It IS a word. But the connotation I needed was as T-rex said corollary.

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

I put this in a spell check, and nothing came back as being spelled wrong. Perhaps I am using the wrong spell check program?

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

That your ignoring of the other person is somewhat disrespectful to them? I mean they are not merely bots there for your amusement which (no offense) seems to be lacking anyway if you are busy amusing yourself with a movie too. I mean I guess I'm a little weird in that I can't multitask while gaming. (Taking notes even is tough for me.) But I know I wouldn't enjoy the movie or the game if I was doing both at once. On the other hand I respect you admitting that you don't chat out of laziness. Habits die hard. Particularly bad ones. I am often lazy as well so I dig it.

  • Magic Etiquette: The Rules of Engagement.   15 years 48 weeks ago

Yes I did too when I realized I misspelled it all over the article. What was my brain on?? We may never know. :p Well never mind that I guess I will need to more vigilant next time. Thanks for the comments. I agree that more discussion of this would be great. I try to make my opponents aware of my feelings on this without being totally obnoxious and sometimes I succeed. But sometimes it is just a total bomb. Silence. Nothing. So I move on.

  • State of the Program - June 19th 2009   15 years 48 weeks ago

I agree with this one. If you are going to show time-series of EV, you can keep it a line graph but just switch the x-axis and the series (a different line for each draft set, x-axis being time). But, if you are only going to show the most recent EV, a bar graph would be more appropriate.

Seriously, why are anonymous posters so impudent? Show yourself and earn your position as a critic.

In other news, Great Article. The point you made should really be common sense, and really aren't brought up frequently enough.

The only issue I have is the fact that every time I saw correlary I twitched for a moment. Just make it corollary and I have no troubles at all /grammar switch off. :D

  • Rogue Play - Small Mistakes & Big Losses   15 years 48 weeks ago

i enjoy this format more & more. But this is sad because the rotation would push the fetch out and me with them : when this rotation would come, i will probably be focused on gain the dual of ME3. So my mana base without these fetch wont be competitive, and and i wont buy any shock land to solve that, because i think the prices of dual will be high. Why cant we have a Kscope based on classic also ? :p

    Nice article man

I never understood Glittering Wish being banned in the first place! What were they thinking? The official announcement back then wasen't very satisfying either. They killed it with the fear that it might cause some overpowered combo decks to dominate the meta. What were they I wonder.

Maybe in time they unban it. So far I haven't seen a single possibility to abuse it. But then again, I haven't specifically searched for it either. Hmm... Maybe I should. Just in case they unban it and so that I'll be ready with my super-uber broken combo deck!

I almost never chat when I play on mtgo, mainly out of lazyness.

I play mtgo like most other games, with just my mouse and no keyboard. I have a few programmable buttons on my mouse that I set to F2 and such so its simple. I usually lay back in my chair and just click with 1 hand while watching a movie or something and rarely feel any need to reach for the keyboard.

If I'm playing in a real paper magic tourney, I feel the need to interact. On mtgo, I don't feel that need, so I don't. Simple as that really...

  • Rogue Play - Small Mistakes & Big Losses   15 years 48 weeks ago

Please, don't talk about the mono-color mountains or plains decks. Xp

And one other thing, there are actually 2 viable fetches post OLS Block: the less than amazing Terramorphic Expanse and the easily forgotten Ghost Quarter, which is going to be quite potent now that Anathemancer says Goodbye.

One other thing, mostly out of curiousity: Anathemancer aside, what do you think about Glittering Wish being banned? That seems really silly to me, especially considering the presence of Supply/Demand for 1 more mana in a more abusive color combination.

I was expecting to get this submission back with comments but the first time it was submitted it was returned without comment so I resubmitted it without changes. Then I got a chance to discuss it with Joshua but by then the submission was in and I guess it was passed on before I could rectify the errors. So again I accept full responsibility for any and all errors. I am hoping my next submission is if not error free at least apparently so.
