    The sorcery speed though...

  • Modern Musings - A New Horizon   6 years 11 weeks ago

I think Vindicate is pretty reasonable for modern.

  • Modern Musings - A New Horizon   6 years 11 weeks ago

The chances of a new vindicate seem pretty good though I honestly don't know how good it would be in modern now. I think removal and cards like that are much easier to speculate on than combo enablers and cards that on the surface seem innocent but could have huge impact like Lackey.

I expect the new cards to be "fixed" variants on older cards rather than older cards themselves. Which could lead to more stimulating game play or no impact at all but probably little game breaking stuff happening.

As I said in my reply to your other comment, welcome back!

Your articles are always relevant to me so there is that. :) Welcome back! :D

  • Freed From the Real 517: More Hype Than Ban   6 years 11 weeks ago

Agreed. I acknowledge I am also part of the problem but it is one of the things that frustrated me when I was writing more regularly for the site. It's nice to have some level of engagement with people in relation to your articles/podcasts/content.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast recently but will try to do so soon.

  • Freed From the Real 517: More Hype Than Ban   6 years 12 weeks ago

I really miss the days when people listened to this show and commented. And commented on the site in general. It is really a shame that this sits here like a ghost town with nary a bramble nor tumbleweed to mark the passage of time.

Paul, no sir, Disco doesn't get the walkers, unfortunately the foresight of seeing different permanent types did not come to mind in the design of this card although, I think had they been considered the card would likely read "all non-land permanents". Think if you want to go colorless and get walkers you have to go with All is Dust or Oblivion Stone, sadly only residents in big mana decks like tron. That said, Oblivion Stone is basically the same speed as Nev's disk (acknowledging it eats 8 mana as opposed to 5 at a minimum) excepting it gets hit by Inquisition, but both pop on T5 under standard mana progression.

"(but also some original inclusions, like Soul Foundry, Virtus's Maneuver, and Profane Procession)."

It should be noted that I didn't draw Soul Foundry, Profane Procession or Grave Pact in the entirety of the event. Virtus's Maneuver was drawn and played for good value.

I guess there's always Plague Boiler and Boompile!

Are you CERTAIN Disk kills planeswalkers? The text specifies Creatures, Artifacts and Enchantments and this has not been changed in gatherer which typically has the latest updated oracle text.

  • Tournament Reports for Magic: The Gathering Online: Modern League Edition   6 years 13 weeks ago

Yes, that was my concern about the Restore Balance deck. I saw SaffronOlive play the deck and you are relying on Gargadon pretty heavily to make it less symmetrical. The deck doesn't empty it's hand rapidly so is often discarding down to the opponent's hand-size and number of lands. Also, Gargadon is vulnerable to Path to Exile which is a problem if you go all in on it.

Seems like a cool deck but it does have its problems.

Sure, Kaleidoscope just got some fresh new tools.

  • Diaries of the Apocalypse: Tribal Week 424   6 years 14 weeks ago

Kaleidoscope sounds good to me! Haven't played it in years!!!

I love the suspend mechanic so much, and now that we get free copies of Balance, Recall and Living Death to play with, it's just great. Wheel of Fortune is waiting to be busted with As Foretold too, it's just a dang shame Eurekea was banned so long ago.

The balance deck is a ton of fun but I am not sure how great it is. On one hand, the format does not do well with Balance, on the other, if you don't have GG, you have to manage your resources as well as possible to make sure Balance does not hurt you as much as it does the opponent.

Liking the look of these decks. I enjoy the Suspend-based combo decks. The Restore Balance deck seems really interesting.

    re

We know when Arena will have player-to-player drafts and not player-vs-7bots drafts ?

  • State of the Program for February 22nd 2019   6 years 15 weeks ago

Without an official MSRP, I expect that the hidden effect will be a double whammy to the traditional LGS model in that Wizards can charge the distributors more, and correspondingly the LGSs have to actually compete with Amazon and other major retailers which is not realistically feasible. There is secretly still some type of MSRP though - the price of a booster pack on MODO is the new index now.

In other news, GP London is apparently trying a new mulligan system replacing the scry with just drawing 7 each time and putting a card on the bottom for each mulligan taken. The side effect is probably to make all-in decks more prevalent which makes high-quality sideboard cards more important, and also encourages more aggressive mulligans, which will increase the time spent in pre-game procedures. It probably does make sense for Arena though, given the automation of shuffling, so I could see a change being made even if it does inconvenience paper players.

The scary thing about the GP system is that even with the current entry prices, they are likely operating at a loss. Free entry for those not playing in GP/side events will eventually be a thing of the past to help close this gap.

The way to make tabletop MCs smaller is simple - reduce the number of invitations. Given the frequency of GPs, limiting invites from those would be the way to do it, but the potential feel-bads are probably the greatest impediment to that happening. Honestly, if it were up to me, there would be fewer GPs, and then you have a play-in tournament of those who would normally qualify this way for a small number of MC slots, probably via Arena to minimize costs.

  • The Case for Crushing Canopy   6 years 15 weeks ago

Yeah it's weird to me that The Eldest Reborn has dropped off in play so much. I think it is really good still.

  • The Case for Crushing Canopy   6 years 15 weeks ago

I wrote this earlier on PureMTGO and I still think it is more true than not^_^.

"When I was playing Standard with new cards a thought came to my mind - Crushing Canopy might be one of the best removal spells in Standard."

The Eldest Reborn is still really good and I would expect to see more of it, maybe not in BUG Midrange but other Midrange decks ... like RB Midrange which is surprisingly a good deck.

  • State of the Program for February 15th 2019   6 years 16 weeks ago

Yeah I ran into that deck on Arena last night. Not as fun as it sounded at first.

  • State of the Program for February 15th 2019   6 years 16 weeks ago

I had a lot of fun the first time I was paired against a 60-card petitioners deck in pauper with my 249 card deck.

  • State of the Program for February 15th 2019   6 years 16 weeks ago

You only need four copies of a card on arena if it is unlimited to deck size. It will let you add any number. I played a 140 copy persistent petitioner deck earlier.

  • State of the Program for February 8th 2019   6 years 16 weeks ago

Weren't you banned for harassment from Magic Online?

  • State of the Program for February 8th 2019   6 years 16 weeks ago

Actually 16 lands is not so bad for such a low curve deck. I played a lot of RDW with 16 lands in Pauper and it did fine. Flooding is worse than manascrew for red decks in Pauper. But I also don't get the 4 fireblasts. Feels like the third copy would be stuck in hand a lot of the time, feels to me it would be better to play only 3 fireblasts and one extra "bolt". But I never played this deck so I am not really sure. Some games go surprisingly long even with burn.
