Advice about the video? If you only want to do one video, do the final build. But from my POV, I'd like to see as many as you can produce. Your commentary is timely, concise and professional. While that first game wasn't stellar, it was still very entertaining and informative to watch as you made the viewer understand what was happening and most importantly WHY -- an aspect of demonstrations that is often underdeveloped -- all in real-time. I much preferred watching that video over potentially reading about how "some 90+ card scrub didn't come prepared for a beatdown" as a lesser deckbuilder's overly-testosterone-laced commentary might well describe that matchup. Excellent work. Please keep it up!

I was going to say the same thing about Akroma. I've played Momir + Akroma a few times and liked it, but never considered Jhoira and Stonehewer (mostly because I don't have them). Thanks for the great ideas!

This is a BG deck that takes advantage of your graveyard. You use mulch and morgue thrull to get your creatures in your graveyard while tortured existence, gravedigger, and disturbed burial to get your card advantage engine going. The spike creatures work really well with sadistic glee. The point of the deck is to make any creature you have a threat. There is plenty of synergy within the deck. Evincar's justice is a clean up spell that allows you to get your opponent's tiny creatures off the board. Death stroke and dark banishing ensure that your opponents do not put anything too big in the way of your guys. Rootbreaker wurm is your fallback plan because he functions well by himself.

    Stronghold cards
    2x tortured existence
    3x morgue thrull
    2x spike worker
    3x mulch
    2x lowland basilisk

This deck is a UB aggro deck.
Story-wise, it represents a group of creatures assaulting a fortress at night, hitting fast before the alarm is rung and your opponent can call for his defenses. Because of this, it has a great array of cheap, efficient creatures, that can either fly over the enemy's defenses or sneak amongst the shadows. It also has some means of stopping the enemy from getting onto his feet, by either countering whatever they try to do, or viciously killing any early oppossition.

Just so nobody get's jumbled in the "The deck curves out nicely" section, you sacrifice Morgue Thrull when it would die anyway, not just whenever you can chuck it out. Unless of course you have the mana to play both gravedigger into a reclaimed thrull, in second main phase after attacking with the thrull.
sorry, just thought i'd clear that up

  • Stronghold Precon Project - Build and Name a Pauper Theme Deck!   16 years 11 weeks ago

This deck is called "Crushing in Defeat". Im afraid its basically just like another deck posted above, but it does have a few differences.
You'll ramp up mana with Overgrowth, Skyshroud Ranger, and Mulch, filling your graveyard at the same time. Then, get down a Gravedigger or play disturbed burial + buyback for one of a toolbox of creatures. Morgue Thrull allows you to dig deep into your deck, and Dauthi Horror gives you a strong play against pesky Soltari decks. Both Spike Colony and Spike Worker act as pump, and give you a combat trick (damage on stack-> move all counters to put a trade in my favour).Theres some removal, like Lowland Basilisk and Dark Banishing, and finally a Rootbreaker Wurm, to end games fast.
Mana won't be an issue in this deck, but I've included a full 24 lands, just to be sure you'll have some accelerant for your Skyshroud Rangers.
Also, i felt that more than 1 Tortured Existence is too many. Any spare are very unfun, as you havn't only drawn something useless in terms of your recursion engine, but you cant pitch it to your first Tortured Existence, making it a loss on both levels. Rabid rats didn't make the cut for a similar reason. It's not fun *just* having attacks in your favour. You want your creatures to die and be reborn, or simply be gigantic enough that they don't die to anything short of Dark Banishing or triple-Shock (at which point, you just bring it back anywway). While the rats can be pitched to Tortured Existence, with there being only 1 they're not going to be relevant in the majority of cases.
Brush With Death and Lab Rats give you something to do with masses of mana in the late game, and also gives you a bit of space against control attrition decks.
Sadistic glee is a winner in this deck. Even though it's an aura and therefore at the risk of losing card advantage, if you can get it on something black (to avoid a Dark Banishing) and have enough creatures to get around Diabolic Edict, you should be allright. Generally, Dauthi Horror is the best creature for the job, but Dungeon Shade can outshine it, depending on the matchup.

    The full list:

    2 Disturbed Burial [TE]
    1 Tortured Existence [ST]
    3 Mulch [ST]
    2 Overgrowth [ST]
    2 Dark Banishing [TE]
    1 Broken Fall [TE]
    1 Brush With Death [ST]
    1 Lab Rats [ST]
    2 Provoke [ST]
    1 Sadistic Glee [TE]

    2 Gravedigger [TE]
    3 Morgue Thrull [ST]
    1 Spike Colony [ST]
    1 Spike Worker [ST]
    1 Lowland Basilisk [ST]
    1 Heartwood Dryad [TE]
    2 Skyshroud Troopers [ST]
    1 Dauthi Horror [TE]
    2 Spined Wurm [ST]
    1 Rootbreaker Wurm [TE]
    3 Skyshroud Ranger [TE]
    1 Canopy Spider [TE]
    1 Dungeon Shade [ST]

    13 Forest
    11 Swamp

The deck curves out nicely, with Skyshroud Ranger on turn 1, Mulch as the most relevant play on turn 2, and provided theres land enough, you can drop a Morgue Thrull (or even Overgrowth into Morgue Thrull) on turn 3. Where you go from there depends on the quality of the hand, but generally I'd beat away with the Thrull, sacrificing it with damage on the stack, and churning out Gravedigger and the Thrull again. You really want your utility creatures to be in the graveyard, where they can be retreived by Disturbed Burial et.al, but at the same time, you don't want to waste damage you could be getting in.

Anyway, I hope you all like it, it really is a blast to play.

I figured since this was going to be a cheap deck, new players would buy it as a starting point. As such I went with simple cards to help new players learn the interface without weird boxes popping up. A good number of these cards are in 10th edition and therefore standard legal. That will make it easier for the purchaser who has only this to start with to build a standard deck as well.

    2x Soltari Lancer
    2x Spirit en-Kor
    2x Mogg Bomber
    12x Mountain
    11x Plains

Behold the power of shock troopers! Featuring 12 creatures with either shadow or flying accompanying hyper-efficient creatures, this deck uses speed to its advantage. Capable of either laying down a large amount of creatures that overrun the opponent or simply holding back while letting one or two slip around the opponent's defenses, this deck supports a large number of combat tricks.

If faced against a deck that focuses on power over toughness, Mogg Fanatic and Shock can be lethal in clearing the opponents field. Against decks which favor high toughness cards, Blood Frenzy is actually really good, as it causes the creature to die at the end of the turn. Also not to be taken for granted is smite, which stops all creatures cold if you can block them. Fling can also end games in combination with Blood Frenzy or Seething Anger, doubling damage dealt by a creature.

Actually authenticsimpsonian independently arrived at the same conclusion as i did (and beat me to it by half an hour). Recurring creatures is the most fun and i have always loved Tortured existence. Authenticsimpsonian deck presentation is awesome but i believe my deck is a little better designed, namely because of mana count. This deck needs a critical number of mana to begin recurring the graveyard and for that i believe overgrowth is superior to rampant growth and the deck has 2 more mana producing elves, the skyshroud elves and 2 other possible ones, the seekers. Anyways, the deck idea is pretty solid and i wouldnt mind if you give the prize to that fine fella but i think this is the more correct build.
Oh, and this decks name has a pun so bad i know Rosewater would be proud.

    Best regards,
    E.Bojorquez

Sick of your creatures getting killed over and over again? Well this is the deck for you! Who cares if your creatures die when you can just bring them back. Use Mulch and Morgue Thrull to fill up your graveyard so you can recur them with Gravedigger and Disturbed Burial. Tortured Existence lets you trade creatures in hand for your toolbox of cards in the graveyard. Need a removal spell? Lowland Basilisk can do a fine impersonation. Want to pump a creature? Keep recycling Spike Colony and Spike Worker. Just keep bringing back those creatures and soon you'll crush the opposition.

Great work! I too was wondering where the Classic was! Understandable if you're targeting a recurring article hitting that week's info. But the other formats don't interest me at the moment (if only I could invest more $ - I'd play them all!)

I didn't read through too much of it, as I just broke away from Pauper into Classic recently. But, the inclusions (graphs, card pics, lists, video) are what intrigue me - you're setting the bar for quality articles! Appreciated!

I like the Naya comment, about having to face it half the time if you play. I felt that way for a long while playing Pauper when Storm ran rampant.

Good information. If you want to continue your arc of writing, I would keep working on the formatting of the page (it gets a little cluttered, perhaps use the deck beautifier in the forums here for lists) and continue working on the editing. You're obviously good with English, though I guess it isn't your first language, and since the resources aren't really available to have a person dedicating hours to copy editing on this site, it will help you a lot if you read and reread your article 10 times before you submit. Just a few tips from a real-life editor. Good work.

Deck Name: Go for the throat
This deck has only one objective: To smash the opponent from turn one until they go down. Powerful, cheap creatures such as Mogg Fanatic, Mogg Flunkies, and Serpent Warrior allow the player to go after the opponent from the start. The Spells give the deck a longer game with Graveyard recursion from Gravedigger and Tortured Existence, and powerful buyback spells in Evincar's Justice, Seething anger, and Lab rats. The deck also features removal to destroy any annoying blockers, with Shock, Fling, Diabolic Edict, and Rolling Thunder.

Well in order to answer to the last comment about the column name and to prevent further ones I wanted you to know that I do aspire one day to become a sucessful writer in this game just like Frank Karsten was or many others but by no means I wnat to take neither their place or take advantage of their work. This is my column inspired by Frank Karsten's one and if the name seems to pretensious then I'll have no problems in changing it. So let me know.
