I'll disagree here. The given pack seems very lacking. I would much rather pick a good removal spell or top notch creature over the Spike, but since those are absent I feel the Spike is the way to go.
Whether something is 'first pick worthy' seems very arbitrary. Obviously there are some cards that are always first picks, but overall worthiness is going to come down to what surrounds the card in the pack. In this situation, there isn't much. (I like the land well enough, and agree that the Spike is somewhat 'situational' - but in more situations than not I would be happy to have the Spike in play with any creature..)
I'll also admit that I may be way off. I've done only 1 Alara draft and have been sticking to Pauper play. I tend to hit the draft tables hard when Conflux enters the mix though. :-)
I've talked with solebush about this issue and I do aggre with him. Quitus Spike is a situational card and not first pick Worthy. It does nothing on its own and its not a game breacking card.
i really think that quietus spike is a great card in draft. I agree, you should have taken it because it is really versatile : its first effect is pretty interesting as you mentioned (with trample or unblockable threat...) but its second effect "deathtouch" is more useful than expected (an equiped vithian stinger could become a removal engine).
As you also mentioned, there not a lot way to destroy an artifact in this limited block. For all these reasons, i think the spike is a great stuff to draft when it is possible...
More of this article a good writer.
Touches on all vital points of the speech t2 decks and has videos of the tier one decks played in mtgo.
Very good.
Keep it up.
Interesting article, i enjoyed to see video of the draft, really nice.
About the deck, it should have been great to know what was your feeling before & after the draft about the limited tempest meta. I mean, did you analyze it as a more control or aggro meta ?? What is specific to the limited tempest meta, to each color ? (for example, tempest is Shadow, big hate cards, good black removal, weak red burn spells, strong mana acceleration available (petal, dar ritual, rampant growth), really good control blue card (differents counters, capsize).
It has a big impact on the choosen cards i think, and this is a success key to well draft in the environment so this is as well a good learning. This part should have been more analyzed in the article i think.
Otherwise, once again, video is a really good way to follow your progress in the draft, making this article original & interesting.
GL for your next draft :)
I don't like to draft Quietus Spike first pick but I must say that I've been beaten up by this one more than once. Everytime it comes out to play against me I seem to lose. I think Quietus Spike can be bomb-like in the right deck.
PROS:
- Since BLUE is underdrafted and the rest of the format is bit short of evasive guys. Put it on a Waveskimmer or Sanctum/Tower Gargoyle or and you're almost garanteed to win. Even better: use it on Jessian Infiltrator. Also useful on the 5/3 G trample guy.
- Not much out there that can deal with it: Naturalize, Dispellers Capsule and Oblivion Ring.
CONS:
- At 3cc and 3 to equip its slow.
- The creature you equip can still be ex-capped, excommunicated, fleshbagged or boned (lol) or dealt damage to.
if you talk about prices and prizes and such, can you be specific? you keep saying that the prize is bigger or smaller or this or that but you don't state amounts. that was so annoying that i stopped listening to the mp3 and decided to write this reply. how big are 4 man q prizes now? how many packs? what about 2 man q's?
For sure. I enjoyed this one alot. For sure. (I kid, I kid.)
Seriously though that hour passed by fast. I'm surprised I was interested in all that stuff. Yeah, I play Magic, but this a whole hour of Magic talk. Now I'm looking forward to the next one. (I listened to the whole hour twice!)
A normal Mormir strategy that I often use in this format is to skip my 1-drop. In Mormir the reason to skip a weak turn 1 play is to get beyond 8 mana. But in this format it gives you an extra play on turn 8 or 9. In Mormir Basic this advantage is moot because Mormir is limited to one activation per turn. But Johira has unlimited activations per turn! These games are usually decided by bombs so having more moves later is definitely better.
In my experience, this format seems to last 7-10 turns. Winning as quickly as Th1ck did in the second video is unheard of. Not that it wasn't awesome! :)
Congratulation for the victory ! You had good draw but skills and luck are both requiered to win.
About the article, the way to write & to explain sounds good. However a meta analyzis is more intersting than a match analyzis to me. I mean it is more interesting to explain which trouble you expected/you solved why this deck won, which mistakes and which upgrades to expect...than to describe the effects & target of burn spell.
It is only a suggestion, and once again congratulation :)
ahh i usually write the reports after a while and try to remember the SB choices which are always the same choices vs the same decks. But that time i tried something different with Pi Zhan and took out 1 feral hydra to keep 1 of the soul's fire. My mistake and thank you for calling me on that i will keep better notes so it wont happen again.
To my knowledge it has not been an official format, and it doesn't seem likely in the future now that Momir Basic seems to be on the slide - which is definitely a bummer. With any luck though more people will start to play and it can become an official format.
Stonehewer Giant is only $0.20, so fortunately it should be a cheap buy in for you.

It used to be pic=(CardName), but switched over with the site reboot
Ahhhhh .. For some reason I thought it was pic=(CardName) rather than (pic=CardName). Doh! Thanks for letting me know. :-)

you seem to be missing the ( ) . its (pic=CardName)
In your article I see pic=CardName
Great article.
I give it 5 star.
Anyone at PureMTGO fix the pics for me? I thought the editor might have been able to catch them for me - they never seem to link proper for me.
Thanks!

I like to throw the Akroma avatar ($0.20) into the mix as well for more random based entertainment.
Another good article, with enough videos to keep us busy until your next one
Just curious...you say you sideboarded -2 Souls Fire but then win the game with a topdecked souls fire when you only have 2 souls fire on your list.
Cards in your lap or misstatement?

lol captivated by the throughness.
