• March 2008 Custom Card Contest (CCC) - Art First 17 years 4 weeks ago

My intention in Roust from Cover was to make a card in which you chase the prey from cover, then shoot one of them, much like a bird hunt goes. Unfortunately, I couldn't alter the image to create a dying quail :P. The card really started from when I saw the card and thought immediately, "Birds of a feather, flock together" and I went from there. Anyhow, thanks for judging guys, and congrats to the winners and all.

Oh, and I liked phasing. I just thought phasing was a little to plain. In today's card pools, phasing would do a lot of other tricks, and would like to see it come back if only for that. Like CIP effects and leaves play effects, but they would be "when this phases out" and "when this phases in" stuff. Mostly phasing was cheaper casting cost stuff, but the cost wasn't well offset by the ability to use it only every other turn. I would take a 5 cast Air Elemental any day over a 4 cast 4/4 flier that phased. They just needed to do something that made the phasing worthwhile. Some did, but most didn't.

Most of the information you want is in the second paragraph of this article. Then just go to the Custom Cards forum, look for the thread for April 2008 submissions, and read all of the rules in the first post.

Who is this going to help?

Probably the many players who still have no idea this is coming. They're not all as tech savvy as you are. I've walked a large number of people through the 2.5 install, and that's even easier.

A good walk through and some good tips, tempest!

I have no idea who this is supposed to help, it's hardly rocket science is it.

Man, one week without banter online ;_; This is going to be difficult. I've never been a fan of that big ball of fire in the sky.

I thought your article was great! Very different. I think it's going to be a something people are going to use in six months or a years time to compare their expectations to the reality of the situation. It's going to be an interesting, frustrating ride.

Absolutley hilarious too. I laughed out loud quite a few times, but that might be because I have no soul. I actually gave a chuckle when I saw "RIP" and then realised that I am a huge heartless bastard.

  • Gonna Fly Now #6- Cold Drafts, not Cold Draughts 17 years 5 weeks ago

Hey I was on a plane when your article came out. Am I too late to be entered for the churro?

Loved the article though - your blends of comedy and strategy are awesome every time out. And I'm impressed with the level of detail you went to in recapping the draft. Well done!

  • March 2008 Custom Card Contest (CCC) - Art First 17 years 5 weeks ago

I don't think anyone should ever be able to use phasing for anything ever again :P

  • March 2008 Custom Card Contest (CCC) - Art First 17 years 5 weeks ago

For Jurin Pupil, what you want is for it to phase out and back in, and get a +1/+1 counter each time it phases in. Phasing remembers the counters it had and accomplishes the same task.

Assuming that you'd be allowed to use phasing for the contest. ;)

  • LLM Draft Walkthrough 17 years 5 weeks ago

The Faerie/Rogue deck you should have had would have been so over the top, it probably would not have dropped a game . . . you dont pass those dousers. Period.

  • March 2008 Custom Card Contest (CCC) - Art First 17 years 5 weeks ago

Yeah, I was at least two-thirds of the way through reviewing that card before I noticed that and had to start over. I think that the way we assumed it worked (with an ever-increasing number of counters) might be the way it was intended to work, but you'd need some fancy wording tricks to accomplish that.

     My Bad ....

  • LLM Draft 17 years 5 weeks ago

I'm not sure that would push me into White. If I've taken a Trio, I'm going to be wanting to draft an aggressive Kithkin deck. So, then if you present me with a Summon the School I'm going to want a Blue0White COntrolling Merfolk build. It's unlikely that I would ever take both of them because they belong quite rightly in contrasting tribes

  • LLM Draft 17 years 5 weeks ago

Regarding Summon/Big Pilfs. I mean, c'mon, it's Big Pilfs. No, seriously though, Summon is a huge bomb, but I guess I did't fully explain myself. I felt like the person to my left was a fairly strong drafter/player, and by passing the Trio first, and then the Summon, I could put him into white, and myself into black (taking Big Pilfs and whatever other stuff.). Mostly in this format I like Black over White I guess, and the lure of Big Drifts into Big Pilfs into Big Drifts again was too much.

I took the Sage b/c I looked at my deck and realized I hate a lot of Wizards among my various Fae. It was something of a whim to be honest, but I've never had Sage treat me all that well, so I decided to give it another chance. Later Rogue picks were straight power choices, but I really just wanted to see how it would work out. Sort of experimental, and maybe not the best choice, I agree, but it was something I wanted to try. I have no problems with just going Rogues in pack 3; I just didn't do it.

I really don't like Stinkdrinker unless I have a dedicated Rogues build, or some redonk rogue cards (namely Notorious Throng). Thefts were indeed coming late (And I'm a man who loves a good Theft). It's the card that lends you the fiver, not me!

Meh, you are attacking me and attacking the author with no sound factual basis. Sounds like a Trollish thing to me

"= fact; spellstutter sprite powerful in faeries = fact; i do not need to bring any proof of something that is totally known"

Faeries Suck as a deck though, so that kind of invalidates what you are talking about.

Spikeboy is writing articles for the PDC Tourney playing community. I think he writes well and has sound opinions layoff and appreciate it for what it is. Until you show up for tournies or are an active contributor to the PDC community you'll just sound like somone just looking to pick a fight.

Like i said chill out and enjoy the read

  • New Frontiers in PDC 17 years 5 weeks ago

"So elrogos, until you back your facts up you just sound like another Troll looking to cause trouble."

first of all, you really should learn a bit of good manners: calling other "trolls" is just rude, cause i've never thrown in opinions just to write: remove soul powerful against blink = fact; spellstutter sprite powerful in faeries = fact; i do not need to bring any proof of something that is totally known

second, this is a public "forum" if we want to call it, so i come here even if i'm not an active player of your pdc community. Or do you really think that just people playing your tourneys can talk and speak about pdc? there are many people around playing pdc that play just among themselves, because for various matters they can't/do not care to play in tourneys. And they play, experiment, read forums and various sites. So, for the second time, if you do not know who you are talking about, try not to assume things about him (calling him ignorant, other than troll)

third, spikeboy himself has written down " I know that some people in PDC believe that I am overvaluing this card, but I still feel it has the potential to really attack the format."

So i assume i'm not the only one with a different opinion from spikeboy, i assume that he thinks that his ones are opinions too, not a law given by god, and i assume he intended that "he thinks that negate can attack the format"; I simply stated "well, i think not, it's a decent card but nothing else".

  • New Frontiers in PDC 17 years 5 weeks ago

    @elrogos

Man you really need to chill out.

I really think your arguements have no weight. Alex is offering ideas and opinions, based on playtesting and experience.

You come in guns blazing and we have no clue who you are. You obviously are not an active pauper player, since Faeries was a viable deck for only a few weeks in STANDARD. You make arguements based on opinion with no facts to back them up.

I think that this was a fine article and spike did a nice job stating his side once again, based on experience and playtesting. He stated that negate is a useful card, not a format warping one, there is even a subsequent post from someone actively plays pauper agreeing with him.

So elrogos, until you back your facts up you just sound like another Troll looking to cause trouble.

  • New Frontiers in PDC 17 years 5 weeks ago

    Really man, are you joking?

" it seems that you took this opportunity to totally ignore the decks I presented and instead talk about your own deck."

apart from the fact that you have presented ONE deck (cause the affinity one is long known) , i have expressed my opinion about the fact that you are overrating one card when there are many other ones that deserves attention (and i have even already said this... about the "ignoring" thing...). Period. I've not said "you write s**t" etc. I've said "imho half your article (the negate part) is bad. I'm not interested at all in your dimir deck. Personally i find it inconsistent, but i do not judge something before having tried it.

I've already wrote that i'm not pretending fearies will dominate the format, just using them as an example of the fact that if fut ext can be warped by something, it's not by negate, but by lot of other things (and the "you need multiple faeries" thing is true, but it's even true that spellstutter is almost always effective given the 12 1cc drop faeries in the format; and it's totally undeniable the fact that, in an aggro deck, a 1U flying creatures with a counter power similar to the one of rune snag is better that a 1U 50% hard counter card, for the simple fact the first has legs... Or maybe every faerie player in the world is wrong and we all should play negate over spellstutter....).

It seems to me that it's you that do not accept critiques at all, but you probably should be a little more open-minded.

  • LLM Draft 17 years 5 weeks ago

Wow, and then you take teh Sage of Fables later on. Wow, that leaves you very unfocused in Pack Three. I'm pretty sure I'd rather have the Rogues- they're stronger in the abstract. The Fables is really a Merfolk card- they can make tokens to churn out card-drawing 2/2s with him. Worse than that, you take teh Blackguard and then loads of ROgues. I think you need more focus. However, the article is certainly well written and presented.

  • LLM Draft 17 years 5 weeks ago

I don't understand your reasoning for not taking the Summon the School. It is sooooo good. Admittedly, Merfolk get less good in Morningtide but it's still awesome. I disagree that you're pushing him into white by passing it. Trio and School should never go in the same deck. Kithkin and Merfolk are two contrasting builds- why on earth would I want to mix them to that extent? The Merfolk may then not flow but that early it's pretty irrelevant. Yes. maybe Pilferers keeps you open but I'd rather have the Uber Bomb everytime.
