I always enjoy your articles - well written, and informative. You seem very realistic in your expectations of gamers in general and yourself. Nicely done.
I also love hearing how you gain cards for your personal collections. You have done that in many of your articles. I think it adds a human element to your writing. Well done!
A nice read, I especially liked the little Limited Lessons portion. I also enjoy how you acknowledge the happiness of opening a card you need for a casual deck- I've done that in my MTGO leagues a number of times.
Hey, no worries, I'm just flattered that you mentioned me. It's a stupid name for a Magic deck anyway ;-). Thanks for an excellent article on Magic theory.
Im just worried about it being a little slow... I mean you got a combo that revolves around 4 - 7 mana cost drops... Im concerned about how well this could actually do against an aggro deck that runs a simple naturalize or disenchant like card.
Im not demeaning the deck in any way I actually like its concept and the combo but the fact that it uses such high mana costing spells without excel just scares me a bit.... but maybe thats just the Spike in me talking...
I would be a bit nervous about using Crossbow Infantry as a method of starting the chain. You might not have the protection, etc. I would consider some form of non-creature damage. Rod of Ruin is one option. Vicious Hunger is another. Desert is fine, if you have them. For that matter, even something like Cruel Edict will start the chain - Last Laugh triggers off any permanent going to the graveyard. If you want an interesting way to start the chain, try Rancid Earth or Choking Sands.
Sengir Autocrat is fine here - even one damage to him or a serf makes the damage increase rapidly.
Sphere of Grace >> Urza's Armor, except for the $ cost.
Nice approach. This whole idea is just fun. So many ideas.
Worship? Flash back Dread Return sacrificing Sengir Autocrat tokens, probably killing a half dozen creatures? This might be even more fun than Grave Pact in multiplayer...
Gotta get me some Last Laughs...
I actually tested this deck extensively, and I must say it performed very consistently, much more so than many decks I've made in the past. Remember that the deck can still function well without one or two of the pieces being on the board due to the synergy in the deck.
this deck seems, not to be mean, a little bit bad to me, I mean the combo is a bit to fragile to be effective... and I mean with the stuff you're using I'd imagine it'd just be cheaper and prolly more effective to just go another route with the deck.... It was a great article though.
fractured loyalty shouldnt even be triggered ever by the guildmage.. the guildmage text says specifically the aura. the only other target for it is the other permanent.
if you do it any other way, the combo breaks down entirely as the aura will have been moved before or after you gain control. if you move it before, the aura doesnt affect the old creature anymore and if you do it after its been moved you can only move it to your own creature
I really liked this article. Different than the Blieweiss articles on MTGO, because it teaches a way to look at things and make decisions about what to purchase. I started around Kamigawa online, and so many of the cards from older sets are tough to get. Focusing on the post-rotation extended is a great idea.
Thanks for the correction Evu. I felt foolish when after the article went up, I was speaking with KingRitz and he kept refering to his deck as Parlor Tricks. Oh well. Thanks for reading.
Minor point: the UBR control deck you're referring to is called "Parlor Tricks". "Grand Entrance" is my UW aggro deck. Understandable mistake, though, since they actually have similar strategies in the long run (card advantage and recursion of creatures with comes-into-play abilities).
I think I feel the same as you: I prefer to play Consistent decks, but there's no getting around the fact that Greedy decks sometimes just beat you with better cards.
Yes, I had some trouble getting it to function as well. I may need to do some more testing of the deck and if I cannot get it to function properly I may submit a bug report to Wizards. I am pretty sure it's just something I'm doing wrong, because it is rather complicated, and the rules engine doesn't like complicated :)
I tried your deck and followed the exact directions on it, but the last creature that gets Fractured Loyalty is the only creature I get. This was a good idea of a deck, I just can't get it to execute. :(
That is a beautiful deck. I may well give it a go, and I have a suggestion to make it even more annoying, which also addresses the creatureless issue: Add in a little green and run a few Living Terrain. If your opponent isn't running creatures, then his lands can get up and walk over instead.
You're absoultely correct. In personal preference, I would much rather run out a Consistent deck- anyone who has listened to me in the room/boards knows this. My word choice was also poor in that instance. I can see the merits of both playstyles and how certain players would feel more comfortable with Greedy decks and can perform with them. In fact, I provide examples of why you should run Greed decks (they tend to do well in short events).
Perhaps I did let my own personal bias influence this article too heavily, but I do beleive that Greed can win, just not in my hands.
Nice to have you back Sebastian!

Definetly looking forward to a day when I have money to get PLC 0_0
Glad to see you using some tables in your article =)

This article has led me to rethink cloak decks. I think BDW stripped down with out suspend cards will take the lead.

Great article, alex. I see theres a bug or two in there with card linker... I'll take a look into it
Whoops, the article I reference is called The Rule of Five, and refernces Turn Five Theory. Way to self edit Alex!
